Today I had a go at melting down some 925 silver, it went quite well, and we ended up with some small heavy silver bars! It was fun to try.
Follow/Chat with me on: / togglism come tell me how I melted down a ring worth $50 :^)

It's rare but look often on old silver jewelery. Some have real diamond. I found one silver earring and it got 65$ of diamond on it :)

Harley rings worth $$$$'s if real. Always a good idea to make sure if real or not before destroying good jewelry. I save all of my good silver Jewelry and would never melt a piece in good condition. It is worth more being left in it's hand crafted condition than a blob of silver. The one ring you liked looks like Navajo Indian to me.

Seeing how 925 silver has other metals in it, if you melt down sterling silver 925 add flux will it be pure silver after?
@Togglism
@Togglism 5 жыл бұрын
It'll still have the impurities, I think to make it pure (99.99%) you'd have to do some chemistry stuff. :
@77skwarli
@77skwarli 5 жыл бұрын
No. To get pure silver from sterling silver involves alot of chemicals to extract it from the copper etc thats in the sterling.

@@Togglism Some of the copper will oxidize faster than the silver and will dissolve in the molten borax. But generally not worth it to try this route. Long heating times will dramitically increase the oxidation. Seperating copper ( and nickel ) from silver would be easiest by dissolving the mess in just enough Nitric acid and then adding a table salt solution to precipitate AgCl. Filter, wash and dry. Mill together with 110% of the AgCl weight of Sodiumcarbonate ( water free obviously ). Then fire that to about 700 Celsius for half an hour then increase to 1000 Celcius-ish. Carefully pour after about 20minutes in a deep metal bucket filled with water...this could splash obviously and is best done with

In Aus. Where do u reckon the best place is to get cheap and easy 925 silver. R OP shops any good??
@Togglism
@Togglism 6 жыл бұрын
Most op shops are combed over a heap so you wont have much chance of finding any 925 or gold in there unless you go to them every day. Best place to get some bargain 925 silver is from ebay, but you always take a risk in it being fake, like what happened to me with the harley rings. :)
