glad to know this works well on wire coils, for all those pesky washing machine motors with the cast aluminum frame around them, I can just melt the whole thing down and stop beating them apart.

I think I will do the same clean any plastic and what steel I can and melt the whole motor and have the steel core for short iron.

So much easier dropping large pieces in to melt like that then cutting up into small pieces! I used your trick here and took my original furnance, drilled a 3" hole or so in the bottom and put on blocks to do some of my larger melts too. Always fun if it melts too quick and you get a huge influx of molten alum all at once and overfill your molds.

lol. yeah, it can get away from you. it may help to lower the heat. I think I need a bigger hole in mine, it worked good in the summer, but the aluminum keeps cooling in the drain hole. I may point the burner at the hole to keep that area hot.

@@Okiescrapper As I put the hole dead center in the middle I need to end up going back and sloping the bottom a bit as it has a tendacy to pool in one corner or the other. I also found that while my burner does go in at an angle to get a swirl motion, it doesn't help that much when there is no top on it to help keep the temperature up. I'm sure it helps some, but just pointing out it may not make much of a difference for you if you put the time into it if you can't keep the top on to keep the heat in.

I think it would have flowed better if the outside temperature was hotter, the aluminum kept cooling off in the hole clogging it up

had trouble getting it to burn good on its own, think the cool temps and the propane bottle was about empty, had to change it out after the first melt. and the drain hole is in the coolest part of the melting pot, the aluminum kept cooling in the hole, I think I will redo the burner holder tube and aim it at the hole. to keep that area hotter and hopefully create a vortex. I always like to see this. i do wonder if there is a piece of grate or similar that could be found and used to keep debris from clogging your drain hole? it would have to be able to hold up to the heat and allow the aluminum to melt and flow through but block and un-melted steel, etc....

In an industrial setting, things like reticulated foam ceramic filters are used to screen out aluminum for casting. They look like a sand-colored sponge with similar hole patterns and can be found for private use, but not terribly easy. They're a lot easier to get if you know someone who works in a production casting facility or make friends with a larger outfit. You could also try carbon foam bricks, but flow rates aren't particularly high for molten metals, however for all intents and purposes, are nearly fireproof for temperatures you'll see in casting use. I've made them in the past and only up around 5400*F will they begin to ablate in an oxygen-burning atmosphere.

it was the cool outside temperature that let the aluminum harden, and the hole is in the coolest part of the melting pot, I am thinking about aiming the burner towards the hole and get a circular motion with the flame

I haven’t built one like yours YET but it’s coming. Okay what I want to know is can I put 2 burners in it one on each side to get a better circulation and in the bottom put a stainless steel mesh to have a better drainage. Like I said I’m gonna build one soon and looking for some good advice

I think 2 burners would get it hotter for sure. one guy said he took an old furnace and drilled a 3 inch hole in the center of it and put it up on blocks, in the summer the drain worked good, I got out and re aimed the burner toward the drain hole and pointed it down just a little, I will test it in a day or two. I may have to drill it out to a 1-inch hole

Have you tried using a metal cake pan or one of those short & deep ones for bread instead of cupcake pans for the first melting? The second melt would heat faster,drip better and make great cupcakes. Anyways, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing this

I was using some loaf pans for big ingots and they got bent out of shape fast. almost need a few big cast iron ingot molds

I got out and re aimed the burner toward the hole and down just a little. I think the drain hole was in the coolest area in the melting pot. I will give it a trial run in a day or two.

The transformer iron takes a lot of heat, and slows the melt down. Cutting the aluminum off would save melt time. A simple air chisel blade can cut thru the windings in seconds, and knock out the cores too. Hope it helps!

You are correct, with the way I have it set up. I am thinking about re aiming the burner. as it is it points straight in, I think I will try to point it at an angle towards the melt hole, and aim it down just a little, then that should keep the hole hot and hopefully get a circular motion with the flame

I've yet to build a melting furnace. I was tearing down motors/transformers today and ended up with 4 transformers that were aluminum. Are those worth talking apart, or just throw them in my head of aluminum I've been saving to melt? Thanks for any advice.

I heard that some scrappers are getting 80 cents a pound for aluminum wire, so check with your yard on price. or save for melting, I try to only melt cast aluminum as I sell it for casting

I had some issues with getting the thing to burn good at first. it may be the cooler air temps. and I found out that when the propane tank is about empty it is hard if not impossible to get it to burn on its own. and thanks for the Christmas wishes and you and yours have a Merry Christmas

no, only when I go to the doctor, lol. no the finished weight is all that matters. as most things that I melt in this pot is aluminum breakage. cast aluminum with steel mixed in

Your first burner had the flame angled, did it not. I think that would be more efficient. But you do well with your melt downs though.
