I think we all would be very interested to see a video about how you get the fire started in your setup, maybe show what you are using for the blower and maybe draw up a sketch of what's going on where the oil/air mixes. Last time I melted aluminum I just dug a hole in the ground, and a tunnel to blow air in, started a wood fire and forced air with a leafblower. I just bought a 55 gallon steel barrel to use in a waste oil burner project for melting and casting things for fun, and am looking at different designs and yours seems like a good one.

I would keep the dross separate and re-fire it to get the aluminum stuck because I know its alto of aluminum in the slag
@pwrovld7 жыл бұрын
I agree somewhat. Using proper smelting techniques is a better solution. Most of the dross is aluminum oxide that formed on the original pieces. Proper fluxing can reduce or eliminate oxides completely by combining with the oxygen and leaving the aluminum part behind, thus increasing your pour yield considerably. There are commercial fluxes available, but I use kosher canning salt (no iodine) as flux, and don't get much aluminum in the dross, and a lot less dross as well, if used sparingly. Whatever process you may be using, always remember to use proper safety precautions, and personal safety gear that is rated for the job you are doing.

awesome video! im about to melt all of my scrap aluminium down too ive built a new more efficient foundry to do it. i have a few questions about your foundry, what is the refractory cement made of it looks like a sand/cement mixture but im not sure, secondly why is the gap between the crucible so wide if it was 3-5cm the foundry would be alot more efficient thirdly what is the purpose of the angle iron keeping the lid open? if anyone is interested in my foundry setup my a video will be released tomorrow on my channel
@mpdragon62958 жыл бұрын
1.Yes that was regular concrete, don't use that, it doesn't hold up to the heat. 2.I was planning to make the lining of the furnace thicker, but then it would be immovable. 3.The the angle iron is there because it didn't get enough air and it would not burn properly.
@taylor52638 жыл бұрын
1 Ive used 50/50 concrete sand for 2 years and it retains the hear better but lasts less time 2 My previous foundry weighed over 80kg it was in a 55 gallon oil drum and the cement was 20cm thick it to combat the weight issues i "acquired" an old shopping trolley and used the bottom half to roll the foundry around on 3 perhaps getting a blower with a higher volume but the same velocity would stop that problem Also have you considered using a graphite crucible i used a steel one for a year and if your treat it well and let it cool slowly then it will warp out of shape before it springs a hole. However saying that i just transitioned to an A12 graphite crucible and its great
@mpdragon62958 жыл бұрын
There is no need to heat the crucible red hot to melt aluminum, then steel the crucible will last longer.
@skyhawk5518 жыл бұрын
at high temps the graphite slowly burns into CO2 untill the wall thickness causes structural failure, the only real need for graphite is melting metals above iron, and those are done in argon plasma furnaces. i'd like to build one soon, just allocated 1,200 in funds for my projects.

Cast aluminum is alloyed to meat industrial standards. Usually contains copper and other metals. CNC is any aluminum being machined by a computer controled machine. It is not "compacted!" We use a lot of 6061. I melt both extruded, which is almost pure AL and quite soft, not very strong. And I melt castings like intake maniforlds, heads, pump housings, pistons etc. I keep them separated because they have different properties. I use the castings for things that need more strength and that machine better.

You can still sell the dross/slag as aluminum to the scrap yards. It's not magnetic and its aluminum so they will probably give you a lower grade aluminum price. Getting some money beats throwing it away!$!$

i think it took you so long because you used a small crucible maybe easier to handle but longer time would you try melting with the forge inclined at the angle allowing continuous flow of molten AL and with a larger crucible ? did you watch the OilBurner guy ? With some improvements that way of melting by dripping molten AL and slag/dross staying in the drum is i think is more than smart time wise and money wise beside that's no investment in the forge what do you think?
