A lot of people thinks that this song was written for a girlfriend that broke his heart, but he wrote the song for his mother, she put him in a orphanage when he was just 4 or 5 years old, so when he saw his mother again it was painful for him.

I'm pretty sure that is incorrect , In the first few lines of the song he says "Yo sabía de cariño, de ternura Porque a mí desde pequeño Eso me enseño mamá, eso me enseño mamá " , don't know if you speak spanish but that roughly translates to "I knew about love and tenderness, because since I was little, thats what my mom showed me".

I think he refers to the illusion that he had of his mother as a very very young boy, his yearning for her and later as he gets older the truth of the hardness (whether excused or not) or disaffection of his mother hits him.
