Most famous for his generalship in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, James Longstreet also had a long and eventful career in the US Army, including becoming friends with a future opponent and President, Ulysses Grant. With post-war controversies and progressive views, Longstreet was reviled by many of his fellow southerners. We’ll look not just at his life and career, but how his reputation was revived in recent times.

Helen Dortch Longstreet lived long enough to be a Rosie the Riveter on B-29s. She was featured in the Dec. 27, 1943 issue of Life Magazine working on these aircraft at age 80.

I’m glad to see General Longstreet get some respect! I actually studied some of this before the movie came out and he was portrayed as pretty much the main character. He always struck me as being a more pragmatic commander and it’s unfortunate that they didnot redeploy as he advised in Gettysburg. We might actually have had twocountries if Robert Lee had actually allow him to go around to the right! There were a lot of mistakes made at Gettysburg by many southern generals. I think the fact that you had two new Corps one commanded by Ewell and the other by AP Hill play the large part in the miscommunication and the hesitancy, especially in the part of Ewell when he had the chance of taking cemetery Ridge on the first evening of battle. But there were other mistakes too. And yes, general, Robert E Lee did make some mistakes but he had a lot of pressure on him and I think all he wanted to do force Washington to come to the table and grant the south independence. I like Pete! Never got the credit he was due! You can’t be the old war horse of probably the greatest general of the confederacy without being a good general, tactician, and strategist!!

All amercans forget .James A Longstreet was a Hollander and his last name Was Langstraat en he was fron Zeeland , stubborn but straight people .., yes , longstraat was one of us ..

Thanks for the video. Longstreet is really cool. He seems to be THE main character on the confederacy side in the Killer Angels. I hope to visit Gainesville one day.

Thank you for your presentation. I believe the Antietam lost order is attributed to D. H. Hill who seems able to negate that. Interesting to me is Longstreet writes his aid, Mosley Sorrel, asking for data on the 1862 campaigns telling him he was there and did what he had to reacting constantly and so had no memory of much of what had happened. Lee had ways to rid himself of officers he didn’t like so any Gettysberg blame would certainly have put Longstreet permanently elsewhere. His loan for Chickamauga also cost Meade two corps sent West and put under Hooker. Longstreet seems always to have wanted an independent command till after Chattanooga and Knoxville and as so many others was quick to ascribe blame to others though D. H. Hill was also critical of Lee but felt he had no right to speak after Lee had died. To say the least, interesting times and interesting people. Thank you again

Longstreet was a main reason why the south lost the war!! Lee's orders would had worked if Longstreet wasn't lazy!! Or resented Robert e. Lee!!!!! Longstreet couldn't fill Tom Jackson's place amen!!!!!!!!!!
