I know I'm posting this nine months later, but recently in January of 2021, i finally saw Memento for the first time and i was mind blown (no pun intended), but confused the first time watching it! I've seen the movie 8 times and after seeing it 8 times, it's one of my favorite movies of all time now. What absolutely works about memento is that Christopher nolan wrote and structured the film in a way that ties with the characters memory condition, with the non linear storytelling, he crafted an intriguingly complex story built on a simple premise with characters who have clear distinct personalities, traits, motivations and go back and forth between being likeable and unlikable. He also plays around with the concept of time as the story begins at the end and ends at the beginning of the story, switching back and forth between the linear black and white segments with the color segments played in reverse chronological order. I've never seen a movie that so perfectly ties the flaws of the character with the non linear storytelling structure, while containing themes of guilt, self deception, the unreliability of memeory and the distinction between reality and fantasy (something which The Prestige does as well). Overall, i really enjoyed Memento, it's already one of my favorite movies of all time and it's a very strong competition with The Dark knight on either this is nolan's best film or the dark knight. It's incredible what you can do with a movie that doesn't need a massive budget or big action scenes when you have a creative mind and a neat story that can be told in a very original way. Memento gets a 9/10.

I disagree slightly... this movie is INDEED re-watchable. If fact you must re-watch it. While it is true it will never be as AMAZING as the very first time you watch it.(most movies rarely are), but finding clues the second or third time around is making it essential to rewatch. There is nothing like this movie.
@michaelbush13742 жыл бұрын
Totally agree man. If I remember correctly my second viewing was even better than my first because I finally grasped everything that was going on. And you catch little things that you don't notice the first time. Like when Natalie walks in and has her evil monolog she is walking around and grabbing all the pens in the room. Totally didn't catch that my first time.

Just watched it. I particularly liked your take on what is clearly a tour de force. Like you, I'm currently going through the Nolan filmography ("in training" for Tenet) but also through the Villeneuve filmography ("in training" for Dune). I have only seen each of their films at most one time thus far (but plan revisiting them all eventually once I get through them a first time). Having seen The Dark Night years ago, I recently watched Inception, The Prestige and now Memento. I love having my mind bent out of shape and so really enjoyed watching these for a first time (and especially thinking about them for hours/days afterwards and digging through KZbin reviews). I particularly appreciate Nolan for what feels to me like his "high-concept", intellectual film making and am comfortable with being left in a confused, ambiguous state of mind at the end (something of an acquired taste for some, I realize). Based on what I've seen so far, however, I can't say that I have come away from any of Nolan's films with another of those things I really love in movies: emotional "gut punches" that also set you thinking about things for days afterwards. (Maybe in another of his films on my watch list...?) For emotional "gut punches", I've found Villeneuve to be my go-to film maker. (I'm also a sucker for pretty pictures and long, drawn-out scenes that set a dark mood, which obviously helps...) I feel spoiled at being able to catch up on the very different styles of two modern masters in anticipation of their respective new films for 2020...

Such a great film. It is really well crafted and we see the story from Leonard’s perspective, and that really works to the films advantage. It has one of the best twists of all time, and the two timelines work surprisingly well. It is acted and shot well, and is in my top 30 movies of all time. On rewatch it isn’t as amazing, but the way it is made that’s a given. 10/10 go out and watch it and buy it.
