I'm thinking about getting a tumbler like the one in this video. It's in my "save for later" list on Amazon. I just love how beautifully the rocks shine up. I'll be referring to your step by step instructions on this video. Thank you for a nice remake of the entire process.

I bought the one in the video used. The come up once in a while online for good prices. My little trick was to look for one which still had some of the original grit the unit came with. That told me it was hardly (if at all) used.

That took quite a while, but it's worth it. Quartz can be quite a diverse mineral in terms of varieties and Moss Agate is just beautiful. I like how some of them have red Hematite inclusions like the tumbled stone at 5:53 for example. It's almost safe to call it Bloodstone/Heliotrope.

All the grit stuck in the pits and cracks will come off with some mineral oil. I just put rocks in zip lock bag and drizzle some mineral oil in the bag seal it and a few day later all the grit is off. I tumble a lot of rocks and thought I would share this cool trick.

Quick question how often and how long do you turn the tumbler off to cool while tumbling or do you? I have mine on a timer that turns off every 2hrs for 15 mins. It adds 21 extra hours of tumbling every week so stuff takes 8 days instead of 7. I just don't want my tumbler to break.
@meMiner

Wait a tic. You put the sugar in with the 600 grit? Was that once with 600 and once again with clean beads, 600 grit and sugar? To be clear.
@meMiner
@meMiner 5 жыл бұрын
I put in clean beads every stage. I don't transfer them to the next stage, so I am not moving grit that might be stuck to them. If I reuse beads, it is in the same stage on another tumble. Sugar is not necessary, but can be used anytime you want the thicken the slurry so the rocks tumble a bit more gentle. In stages 1-3, if this was your goal, probably a bit of clay would work better for this purpose. I would not use clay in stage 4 polish as it might have a bit of grit to it. Instead, if I add anything to stage 4, it is sugar. It is cheap. It seems to make things sticky and help with the polishing.
@Filterfinder
@Filterfinder 5 жыл бұрын
I use sugar to get the grit to stick to the rock better in every stage. I feel like it makes them tumble a bit quicker.

@meMiner
@meMiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your service. Stay safe. You deserve some quality time with your daughter. I mostly self collect. I live in Ontario, Canada and there are lots of different rocks to collect and polish. I have also bought some, usually at mineral shows, so I can see the rock and not pay shipping. I usually buy the grits online but sometimes they are sold at mineral shows. If you are in the USA, I have heard good things about The Rock Shed.

Maybe a fluke from the manufacturer.?..anyway enjoyed the agates very pretty!
@meMiner
@meMiner 5 жыл бұрын
It gets easier to open as it gets used. In the meantime, the easy answer is to use the washer (round thing the size of a coin, with a hole in the middle) and put it sideways into the crack (under the metal lid, on the barrel). Give it a twist and the cap will pop right off.
