Basic tutorial using a rotary rock tumbler to polish self collected blue feldspar called Amazonite (AKA Amazon Jade). Let's see if meMiner can polish this temperamental stone.
BTW - I said in the video that Amazonite was 5 on Mohs hardness scale. It is 6.

Amazonite is 6 to 6.5 on Mohs, so not "horribly" soft. I mistakingly said 5 on this video. Let's see what else I got wrong.

Thank God for That! I thought this was a start to finish video, i'm glad it wasn't, a month of watching that tub go round and I would be completely ready for Warner Bros cartoons, but as you only show the highlights i'm not quite there, soon though, I will be ready soon. I stopped tumbling some time ago, I kept falling down and feeling drunk, I may start again in the future on either hard selected pieces or just for the finish polishing of cabachons, I have lost so much when tumbling softer Rocks that I just won't do it now, I cut out the middle man and just throw away about a quarter, it slaves time and resources. For me the satisfaction is selecting a rock, choosing the cut, finding the pattern and shaping the cab, it only gets time consuming after the initial shaping is done. I missed my Daisy diver in this one. Stay well buddy.

@@meMiner But I don't have any vibes, no vibes, no tumble. I built a vibrating plate, not that difficult really and it worked really well, the beauty of those is you just wait until you have a load of ends or slabs and create your own Production line, I used an adjustable vibrating motor, it has two ends on the amature like a grinder and interlocking circular weights that have a portion removed, massive vibration isn't always the best method. Daisy is a wise girl and perhaps you should heed her advice. Warning, the small ones really do not hold very much.

The piece I had polished was a lot smaller than when I started, so that was the reason I had never tried it again. But now I know! Thanks so much for sharing that awesome info. I so suggest flat lap. Given the equipment that you have. I shape and polish my feldspar on the 6 wheel cab king at my local lapidary society shop. If you are going to continue to tumble it I suggest you round all edges and the plastic pellets to keep them from smacking so hard that damage happens. I've seen the vibration lot-o do a much better job than the tumbler.

I have similar problem with flint - it's very easily cracks down in the tumbler. Probably best solution is a tire... tire tube actually. You can cut it into a squares and throw into tumbler - of course rocks still will cracks, but less than without rubber beneath. Unfortunetly grits can easily penetrate rubber and stuck inside, so you must have extra rubber for every stage.

I had bought a vibe tumbler and broke the pin from the motor first time I used it. I tried taking it apart and hit a snag. It is still on my work bench. I was considering a Lot-O but would have to import it from the US. Maybe Santa will get me one.

meMiner we just got a Lot-O tumbler and had it imported from the US. Got it from Lapidary Mart. Ran a few batches so far and it’s awesome. There were a few kinks in the process as it’s a bit different than normal vibratory tumblers. Rob from Michigan Rocks helped me with and now we use it exclusively for all vibratory tumbling. We used to run a Raytech Vibratory but it’s getting outshined by the Lot-O.

meMiner It’s a 5lb barrel. I fill it with 4lbs of rock and 1lb of ceramics. That ratio works well for me. I have a 10lb rotary barrel that I’m constantly running stage 1 in. Once I have enough rocks ready for the Lot-O I start it for stage 2 and so on.

Good job! I would maybe d 3 days of stage 2 just to quickly take off some rough, if I were in a hurry. Looks like you did save time and maybe some stones by not cutting / grinding out bad places. For feldspar, if I'm really concerned about micro cracks, maybe try adding powered resin to the burnishing stage or by gentle warming of the stone to 110°f to 120°f prior to using buffer + resin.

I have another batch running but realized after a little while in stage 4 that I was not happy with the rocks and moved them back to stage 2. That will be a while longer. I have to cut some more rocks and get another tumbler running. I have the rocks and just have to find the time...and the weather has to cooperate. If I don't get them tumbling soon, I will have to worry about ice and will drive my wife nuts by moving the machines inside.

The video I was waiting for! :) So excited to see this. Turned out great. Hope you run more of the stuff. You mentioned that the amazonite (blue) is colored by lead. Is there any lead exposure risk with this mineral? Should we keep it away from the young ones?

It is just a slight contamination to get the colour. There was an old lead/galena mine about 10km to the south of this spot.

@@meMiner Thanks for the info. Just looked it up on the gemsociety.org website, and they confirm what you say, despite the exposure risk being low. For beginners like me, it's good to read up on the potential for toxicity of particular minerals, especially when introducing kids. Do you think you'll do another run of amazonite starting with coarse grit to remove the external fractures? Perhaps an abbreviated step 1 since it's not on the harder end of the scale? Stay safe.

I have a 3 big chunks of what I think is green feldspar.. looks just like what you have here but you said "blue"? What would the green be called? I am going to skip #1 and start on 2 because I don't have a saw yet to shape them and go from there. I agree,, they wear down fast so I am going to be sure I have larger pieces than I usually tumble in my 2 lb National Geo. tumbler. I just checked one batch after a polish for 7 days and not shiny so I added some new polish and fresh water but also some Borax to tumble longer. Some say borax helps the polishing but time will tell. I use blue Dawn liquid dish soap but also have the ivory for burnishing. You seem to prefer Ivory. I know its pure soap with no dyes etc.. and use it in the shower for that reason. Have you tried the Dawn at all?

Hey! I had rock tumbled for a bit but each time I did my rocks never turned out to be shiny. I had taken the time to scrub each rock with a toothbrush and rinse out my tumbler. Do you have any ideas that might help me? Is it my polish brand? I used the Dan and darci grit. Maybe my tumbler isn't clean enough? When I look into my tumble I see little sparkles but I can't get it out. Thank you for the amazing content!
