The upper Buffalo is one of the prettiest river trips in Arkansas. Floated there many times. Jasper is a nice little town nestled in the mountains.

I have to say, all these years later I still resent the forced closing of the Boy Scout camp, Camp Or. That was where I spent my first entire summer away from home. That was the first job I had at age 14 that required Social Security be deducted from my pay check. I worked the kitchen in Uncle Frank's Lodge. I resent all those tourist crawling the banks were I learned my first embers of self-reliance. I wonder if the bluff top trail on the left bank was closed down because someone deemed it unsafe for mere tourist. I wonder if anyone jumps from the tall banks down river into the river anymore. Does anyone slither down the slimy steep walls of Mud Cave? Or is that also off limits? I wonder if anyone still hears the rustle and blood curdling howling of Smokey Joe in the black of the night. Does anyone visit the site of the Osage Indian village or even know it was there? And if they do is it roped off with a pamphlet and information signs? Did they straighten the twisted dirt road that decended to Camp Or with a four lane highway and an eighteen acre parking lot at the bottom where fields of Buffalo grass once danced. The whole thought of it disgusts me.
