Nice view of the parade. The safety orange paint on that old cat's paw is exactly what my wife's grandfather used to paint all his hand tools and garden stuff like rakes and hoes -- to mark them as his. I have a crowbar, a ball peen and a metalworking hammer all scuffed up in his orange paint. I like them that way.

Washing a rope never occurred to me. But now it makes perfect sense and I'm going to try it. I appreciate the long Loops for rolling it up too. More Loops = more potential knots!

Good stuff. I like theSpeed ratchet and I know where it would shine. The funny thing about the catspaw is it didn't look that hard used until you see the mushrooming. Me thinks the fellow was a little heavy handed, as Mr Pete would say Bubba with his sledge hammer. I like the blueing and the engraving. Nice finishing touches.

John, the bluing looks good on that cat's paw. I bought that pair of Irwin tap sockets several years ago. They come in very handy at times. I have a 1/4" thumb wheel ratchet (with an adapter) on them or sometimes use a ratchet wrench. Gearwrench makes a ratcheting tap and die handle that is very comfortable to use. George

Great work John. Nice set of tap chucks. We made all kinds of gadgets in the tool room for special jobs. I have a 1/4" tap handle with a long extension bar attached so I can tap setscrew holes in pulleys.

Thanks so much for showing the rope maintenance the end result looks amazing and I can imagine how that should feel ! Dad has just gone into Hospital but he would really appreciate this, I'll talk to him about it when I next visit, came upon his book "Encyclopedia of Knots and Fancy Rope Work" (1939) while clearing his house this week ! Cats paw came out great, good to see those facets re-established, great skill, polished or blued both look good to me ! Funny when i first saw those Craftsmans speed spinners handles, I thought about cutting it up and making a short stubby ratchet. Then I saw the price of them. Haha. I did some window glazing this weekend and that plier nail puller you pointed out to me worked great on all the stops and mouldings. Thanks John. I like the bluing.

The Leatherman Wingman model has a dedicated tool for clamshell packaging. It goes through it like a knife through hot butter. It is the quickest, safest and easiest way I have found to fillet the nasty bloodthirsty devil packages.

Having grown up around carpenters and other tradesmen and working in the trades since '82, I've been around hand tools almost all my life. The catspaws made in the US before 1980 or so were always single ended tools like the one you restored. I think the Japanese toolmakers started the trend of putting a second claw on the other end of the hammer. If I'm trying to pull nails where there are no obstructions I prefer the older style. If I'm taking a structure apart I will use my double ended tool, (a Dead-On Exhumer), even though it has never felt as good in my hand.

A thoughtful Memorial Day to you, ScoutCrafter. Your rope tutorial was a learning experience for me. I haven't used rope much in my time but I like the stuff. In my years as a carpenter I had a Cats Paw early on until I came across a tool quite similar to the stylish Stilleto with the lump on one side. It was made in Japan. It was a good piece of steel, 14 inches long with a return on one end and the other end straight. It was my "nail pick" and I wound't be without it. Useful for more than picking nails. God Bless the families of the fallen.

I went to an old cemetary that had graces from Cavalry soldiers and infants that died before modertn medicine.I might have been one of those but the medicine saved me and stained my teeth instead. My mother even talked about it to me yesterday as she still feels bad. BTW I still have a root beer float waiting for me back n my gardens. Been transplanting all kinds of apple trees & grafts incase we get a really bad depression/recession people should know to proprogate and plant fruit and nut trees. We will need the local food when the supply chain breaks down again.

The ropes turned out beautiful. The pry bar looks great. I was wondering all these tools that all of us restore by grinding and polishing material off, does it somehow compromise the manufacturers original integrity of the tool?

The only tools I am concerned about is screwdrivers, when we take too much off the tip I believe it can make a difference. Other than that most tools I never noticed any difference. 😃👍

Old English Lemon Oil is just Mineral Oil with color and scent added. I don't know if it was voluntary or they were forced to do it but the new bottles say 99% Mineral Oil right on the front now...........Sewing Machine Oil is Mineral Oil, Standard Gun Oil is Mineral Oil, Honing Oil is Mineral Oil and so many other things are Mineral Oil..........Over the last month or so I went thru over a Gallon Rejuvenating all 16 doors on the first floor of this house, which are all over 50 years old (Took each one off set it on horses and let them drink in as much as they wanted)...........Also if you need a thinner version you can use baby oil.......I like both Polished & Blued and since you have plenty of pry bars there's no reason not to do some up differently.

SC, I have a cats paw just like the one you restored. Mine has a rubber handle which covers the red painted area on yours. It helps absorb the hammer blows. Just thought you might be interested in knowing.

Great video 👍 Fantastic information on how to properly maintain you’re rope to give you years of service. I have some old rope that needs this done to it. Never thought that rope could be brought back to a new like condition like that. Does the oil make the rope more soft and easy to work with? I heard you can boil the rope also to get it like yours. Again great information 👍. Those Irwin adjustable tap sockets look pretty cool. I have to agree that those clamshell packaging is a injury waiting to happen, I think the method you used to open the package is the best way from cutting your hands all up✅. That Cat’s Paw you restored turned out Fantastic. I kinda liked the Blued one, it looked awesome. I bet it is pretty cool to live on a block where you can enjoy parades and such right from your front porch 😀👍. Also you always have great shots of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the breeze, awesome! I think the blued finish was awesome! It’ll age nicely too. I never knew that about ropes. That’s good to know! I remember once I found like 50 feet of rope washed up on the beach and I took it home and rinsed it with the hose and dried it on the driveway in the sun, and then we went to test it by pulling on it and it exploded under the slightest bit of tension. It must have been ruined by salt water and sand and sun.

A true speed handle (looks like a brace and bit), whether it's 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2"; is one of the most underutilized tools there is. It is, most often; the quickest way to deal with a fastener. Short of going to a power tool. In today's workplace, they have been replaced by the advancement of battery technology. Not as much need for them, anymore. A shame, really. I had a 3/8" drive I used to use all the time.

What a fantastic video, I learned a lot thanks. On the rope maintenance maybe you could do a video (unless you already have) on how to coil a rope or power cord. It's something I learned and although it took a little time to get the knack, it saves me from fighting monster cable tangles (which I used to have to do). Now I keep my cables nicely coiled with velcro ties. I replaced most of my power cables with flexible silicone cable over a couple of months, which meant removing every plug (or lead if the plug is moulded). It took a lot of time, but it was time well spent. Finally got a small metal lathe for my workshop this week, a Myford ML10 with plenty of Pratt Burnerd chucks, Jacobs chucks and a milling slide, so I'm having a great week.

I don't like using a ratcheting tool for taps. Makes it inconvenient to periodically back it out to clear chips. I was always taught 1/2 to 1 turn, then back off 1/4, then repeat until the thread is cut. Love the way you "care and respect" the ropes. Appreciation of nice things doesn't apply only to high dollar items.

I was in the uk fire service for 32 yrs at training of 14 weeks we were told a rope has no purpose so in British navel tradition we had to call all our Ropes as lines as the all had a specific purpose in my job lol

Traditionally a rope is unemployed cordage- When my cordage is coiled and awaiting a job it is ROPE however once the rope is put to use it becomes line. 😃👍
