Gaby's athleticism, long flowing strokes and all-court game was a delight to watch. She was (still is) beautiful inside and out, and her authenticity is second to none. It takes so much courage for a player to break down such a soul-crushing defeat, and she delivered it with grace and humility. It was a delight to see her again.

Gabby's game was always beautiful to watch - an all-court player who relied on spin instead of power. Looking back, when Gabby's game was "on," it was like watching an exotic South American bird flying. She served as the perfect counterpoint to aggressive baseliners like Seles and Graf. Together with Graf, Seles, Pierce, Sanchez Vicario and Novotna, to me, theirs was the golden decade of women's tennis for the sheer variety of styles (baseliners, all-court players, counterpunchers and serve-and-volleyers).

Gaby should be proud of her achievements. US open champion, Wimbledon finalist, 5 x French open semifinals, 4 x Australian open semifinals……27 career singles titles including 2 x WTA championships and an Olympic Silver medalist (1988 Seoul Olympics) and ranked in the top 10 from 1986 to 1995!! Unfortunately she just played in a very strong era with Navratilova, graf and Seles. Gabys yeah end rankings each year as below; 1984 - 84 1985 - 12 1986 - 9 1987 - 6 1988 - 4 1989 - 3 1990 - 5 (US open champion) 1991 - 3 1992 - 3 1993 - 5 1994 - 7 1995 - 7 1996 - 56

Although, Gabby did not reach the finals of Roland Garros [Singles], her incredible athleticism and unwavering determination won the hearts of so many people across the globe. The former World No. 3 [both in Singles & Doubles] and the 1990 US Open Champion showed just how excellent she is on the court as she is off the court. Her solid performance came in 1988, 1991 and 1992 as she finished the year ranked World No. 3 and won 14 WTA titles in those years. I love Gabby! ❤ Thank you Roland-Garros for this beautiful video ❤

@@c.j.carney8432 Gabby's a great player but your statement 'She should have won' especially during the 1989 Roland Garros was like a tall order considering that she'd probably face then World No. 1 Steffi Graf who, at that time, had already won 6 Grand Slam Singles titles or even Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (the eventual champion) or possibly Monica Seles who made her Grand Slam Singles debut during the 1989 Roland Garros and reaching as far as semi finals.

@@c.j.carney8432 It was sad really because we all know how excellent Gabby was especially on clay. However, her 1987 and 1992 Roland Garros semi final runs were amazing as both of these matches reached a third and final set from Steffi Graf & Monica Seles respectively (and, who happened to won the titles as well). Her other 3 semi final runs were all in straight sets as she was defeated by no less than Evert, Graf and Seles respectively.

Gabby was lovely player to watch when she was at her free flowing best. Much is always made about her heavy spin groundstrokes but she was also a superb volleyer. Navratilova is the only other woman better at the net imho. The closest she got to the French title was in 1991, a year she should have won it, as in the months leading up to Roland Garros that year she was the best player in the world, with a series of stunning victories over Graf and Seles at the Italian Open, just before the French. Unfortunately at the French she met a determined Seles who whilst sometimes beatable in run of the mill tour events, was practically unbeatable when it mattered. The following year in 1992 she also had chances to win her semi against Seles, but Monica showed why she is a legendary player. Having been outplayed much of the match and 2 - 4 down in the 3rd, Seles turned her level up a notch and steamrolled Gaby, taking the next 4 games in a trot. There was simply nothing Gabby could do. Ultimately she was unlucky to play in a era against players like Graf and Seles, against whom Gabby was no match when they were at their best.

Such a shame Gabi never won at the French Open. I think the pressure got too much for her at times. She was up 5-3 against Graf in the semi final in 1987, serving for 5-2 against Monica Seles in the 1992 semi final, and had disappointing performances when she was one of the favourites in 1989 and 1991. And of course the infamous loss in 1993.
@moviefan4life166

A shame indeed. Gaby would have loved to at least play one title match. It should have happened on the two occasions you mentioned and she would have had a nice shot at beating Arantxa in 93 in the semis. I wonder what happened in that famous collapse? Gaby referenced the absolutely terrible things that were going through her mind in this match. It sounds like it was a very painful experience, and one in which she must have been saying such negative disparaging things to herself. I wish she could have gotten that serve in on match point or converted one of the 5.

When are women going to play best of 5 in the slams as it's sexist that they don't?

WHO would want to watch a FIVE setter between those scream queens (Azarenkanja, methinks) and the boooring playing style of the (Polish, I think) number one ?! NOBODY WOULD !
@jeremyredding2251
@jeremyredding2251 Жыл бұрын
Oye. Another idiot post. Let me explain. Humans born male are generally stronger physically than their female counterparts and can thus are better equipped to handle five setters. The quality of play would diminish significantly if women were to play best of five...in general. This has nothing to do with sexism, just science. These prizes are given as the result of winning a tennis tournament and the players aren't paid by the hour, are they? So the length of play is immaterial with respect to prize money. Do you understand that basic concept? Stop being a &_-$ing moron.

No thanks. It would make Grand Slam events a 3+ week event if that happened. Really mess up the schedule for both tours. I am for a Best of Five Women's Single Final, just the final match. That very doable with final Saturday of a Slam not being schedule heavy. WTA Year End Championships used to be best of five final.
@mattliechty1269
@mattliechty1269 Жыл бұрын
I think it would be interesting to see the Grand Slams do best of 3 for women AND men through 4th Round, and then best of 5 for both women & men from Quarterfinals onward. There would be more opportunity of upsets in the men's field, and the final 8 would be more rested to really fight the last 3 matches. Fitness would come more into play for the final women's 8, and they may have to actually deply more strategy than just bashing every ball. And then it would be equal pay for equal work.

It is shocking Gabriela Sabatini NEVER won Roland Garros or even reach the FINAL. I think Gaby made semifinals four times. In 1992 Gaby best chance she beat Seles & Graf in Clay court finals. It was sad Gaby choked against Monica Seles up 4-2 in third set. Gaby got passive and crumbled under the pressure.

*GABRIELA SABATINI IS A TENNIS LEGEND!* Even at the time, I always thought that Gaby was a male in a female body - what we would call a Transexual, these days! NO CRITICISM in the slightest. I'm just so sorry that HE hasn't ever been able to "come out" as Himself. Gaby always had such obviously Masculine body-language, style, speech etc. Even in those days, Martina "came out" & had a "wife", yet Gaby STILL felt the need to be CLOSETED! In this video, we're seeing a very handsome man talking to us! It's a sad reflection on the South American (overly Religious) Society these days! However, back to Tennis: Gaby was the only player (on the Tour at that time) to challenge Steffi - so many fabulous & close-fought matches! *GABRIELA SABATINI IS A TENNIS LEGEND!*
