Another good enjoyed video. Good quality. We visited Oban one day in July 2010 and it rained all day as it did on most other days. To keep dry we went on that ferry to Mull. Reasonable fare, about £7 each, but we did not land there as rain continued and we would have had to stay there for about three hours. The ferry trip was enjoyabll. Great scenery.

I very much liked this, as I have visited Oban a few times in the past. The quality of the video came out very well, I could not tell the difference from a modern video.

@TriflingCircle When we visited Scotland in our Mini in the 1960s it was the first time we had been on holiday when it rained every day for the whole week! I can still remember the sound of the rain pounding on the thin roof of the car! We loved the scenery however and would like to go back again some time to have a better look around..

@robmasterman Thanks Bob. We lived in a settlement of temporary war time prefab houses back in the 1940s which had been removed when we went back looking in the 1960s. I have recently enjoyed having another look around the area using Goolgle Earth and located where I used to have fun playing as a child. Very enjoyable!

@downhill240 I believe it was work given to builders when times were hard by a local benefactor just to give them employment. It is a striking open circle of walls with green space inside from which there are wonderful scenic vistas to be enjoyed.Seeing it above the town straight away signifies you are looking at Oban.

I was a boy of about 4 or 5 during the war so had no photos of my own.. I do remember with affection some black and white photos my parents had, but sadly they have not survived the passage of time..

Avast there, Admiral! For your ferry trip, go on the Wednesday Cal-Mac to the pier at Colonsay, then on to Port Askaig on Islay - a beautiful island with the friendliest folk on the planet. Stay overnight at the Whytes' Guest House at the airport. The following day take ferry from Port Askaig or Port Ellen to Kennacraig, from where take car or bus back to Oban. For your next trip, take the ferry to Mull, then bus to Ulva Ferry which you can reach by a small ferry boat. Having done that then on to Fionnphort and over to Iona. And the 3rd trip: Cal-Mac at Oban, stay onboard overnight, then to Coll-of-the-corncrakes and then Tiree-of-the-surfers, and back to Oban, all in one day. (On alternate days, the order is Oban-Tiree-Coll-Oban).Tha mi'n dochas gu'm bi toigh leat do thurais!All best.

McCaig's Tower is never referred to as "Folly" which is something built for no purpose. McCaig gave work to local people but the first war came along and took the men away. The work was never completed. Oban is my home town and that of my parents, grandparents and great grandparents and beyond. S.McMillan. Feb 2016

I certainly did fulfill its purpose and left Oban with a very characteristic feature. I lived nearby as a young boy in the early 1940's and is one of my favourite early memories.

Since you stirred my memory I have had a look into what photos I may still have and have come across three taken in 1944 at Dunstaffnage village showing the old prefab houses that we lived in at the time, and myself aged four with a friend and also one of my mother wearing wartime clothing! It they would be of any interest to you, I will e mail copies if you would like to give me your address.

To Admiralscorner. I was born in 1944. Did you know my great grandfather John (Denny) MacFarlane or Captain MacInnes
@ADMIRALSCORNER8 жыл бұрын
No. I was only a child of 3 when we first arrived to live at at the little prefab village of Dustaffnage. My father was sent there during the War from Plymouth where he worked in Devonport Dockyard. I had a look at the location while on holiday in recent years but all the buildings I remembered had gone.
