Barras100 is a yearlong celebration of the centenary of the Barras market, produced by Friends of The Pipe Factory and supported by Creative Scotland Youth Arts, Glasgow City Heritage Trust, Scotland Loves Local and Glasgow City Council.
In 1921, the story goes, an astute businesswoman by the name of Margaret ‘Maggie’ McIver created a safe place for people to trade from their barrows in Calton, in the east end of Glasgow. What started off as a small outdoor trading post for a few locals would become the world famous Barras market. More than a shopping centre, the market was a thriving entertainment hub, a meeting place, the beating and banter filled heart of the Glaswegian community.

Remember the candy floss machine. Pity Glasgow District Council don't have the same love for the Barras or the other old Glasgow institution Paddy's Market, gone but never forgotten.

That was nice to watch. I am in my mid fifties and I have so many fond memories of the barrowland's. Always would come back home with several items and a feel good factor. It was all a different feeling back in the seventies, young innocent and a great day out. Loved krazy house, and then something to eat and then a day at the movies. Nothing but lovely memories. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Although I live in Cambridge I have a wall clock hanging in the front room bought by my grandad from there in the 1940s he was a minor. As long as I’m alive that will be hanging in that front room.

Happy 100th anniversary to everyone at the Barras, for the Barras are better! What is magic about the Barras??...well it's not just the stalls but also that of the good people of Glasgow and further afield but let's just say that the Barras wouldn't be entirely complete without the banter! As for myself I must have been only 3 years of age back in (1983-1984) going to the Barras with my wee late Granny from Kirkintilloch and I've been going to the Barras ever since more or less! I particularly always remember the really older chap at the biscuit stall (James) that could potentially put Tunnocks to shame handing out freebies for just us! Hey they wir tha day's especially thoughout the rave scene picking up the Old skool pirate rave collection mix-tapes from RHYTHMIC GENERATOR & PULSE feat QFX! Long live the Barras I say!

I remember being taken to the Barry’s by my Mum and Dad in the 80s. We used to go on a Saturday and Xmas Eve. In the 90s when I was a teenager we would all go down to get the fake perfume that would have you put in a rash. I hope they revive it but don’t make it all Trendy and poncy like they’ve done with the Savoy centre with all the arty fatty shite.

My memory of the barras was the wee stall where you could swap porno mags, Fiesta, Rustler, Big Ones. In the days before the internet it was a goldmine for a young lad.

I remember as a young boy in the late 60s and seeing a Man drinking a purple liquid from a milk bottle ( around the Barras Area ) and asking my Dad what it was…. Methylated Spirt he replied….. funny but sad I suppose but it’s a true story.
