The British Press (and hence the public) never seem to reveal that it was Churchill who did not send air support to Singapore. This only allows history to portray the troops in Singapore (my father was one of them) as inept. Of course that wasn’t true they fought bravely but were let down badly. What happened when Singapore fell is that the soldiers became Japanese POW and were treated appallingly without the protection of the Geneva Convention. Thousands of POW died in misery caused by cruelty, starvation, overwork, torture and disease especially in Thailand and Burma. So Thankyou for this podcast and for recording your history.

My uncle served in the 137th Field Regiment RA, and was killed at the Battle of Slim River, Malaya, 7th January 1942. My father's cousin, a sergeant in the Manchester Regiment, was taken prisoner at Singapore. He was put to work on the Burma Railway and survived the war.
