In this episode I try to memorise 100 digits of Pi in ONE day. I used the major system to tell myself a story that I could decode to remember all 100 digits. The system works by converting the numbers into consonant sounds, then into words by adding vowels. You then create a story out of the words to learn. The system works on the idea that images are easier to remember than numbers. Checkout the Wired Video: • This Guy Can Teach You...

You can actually! Create a keyword for every number and connect it with a word reformed from the element. Like 2 is helium. If imagination power is there then 2 looks like the neck of the duck. We can reframe helium like hello! Now create a moving image in your mind connecting duck and hello like... A duck is saying hello to me! And whenever you fail to connect you can add yourself in between just like i did. So next time anyone asks you whats the element on 2? Your mind be like 2 is duck, ducks says hello to me, hello is helium. Your mouth be like ITS HELIUM!!

Yeah I know 150, I've binged a few more digits every year around pi day for the past 4 years. My method is just memorizing them in 4 digit chunks. I notice a ton of patterns and each helps me, like 0628 6208 at some point. I wonder how much of these patterns would still be obvious if I memorized 5 at a time, or how many new patterns I'd notice.

Kinda why I learned the 100 digits of Pi for Pi day just by just memorizing the numbers based on patterns I see in it, rather then turning them into words and taking time to “decode” it. I'd like to argue that you haven't actually memorized the digits, but instead you've memorized the major system and then a string of words to help you figure out the numbers. Hear me out. You memorized those two things and then just wrote out the string of words you learned and decoded it. Personally, I would only count memorization as being able to recite the digits without the pen and paper. I'm not saying what you've done isnt impressive and I'm not saying that I can or have done better, although this is a critisism so I dont really need to have done better. What I'm saying is it feels like you just wrote down the numbers without writing them down and then read the letters as numbers. To have completed this challenge I probably would say that the sentence would have to go from your head, to numbers and then spoken without the pen or paper. Anyways, great work! Love the videos as always!

Yeah, not to belittle the massive amount of work this took but I would see the main purpose as being able to tell others that you know the 100 digits of PI in like small talk. If you tell someone that and then you have to whip out the poster board and pen, I dont think that works so well lmao

Memorizing pairs are easier than individual numbers, and makes it seem much less random. From there on, you can use more advanced technique to memorize these in either a story (by association) or just through repetition.

So I was curious as to how much quicker this method would be vs. just brute force memorization, so I paused at 4:50, took a pen and paper and went at it. Took me about 35 minutes. I think the Major system can be really good if you already know it, and is probably better for longterm retention, but adding in the filler words to make it into a poem slowed Mike down a lot. If he just memorized 33 words in like a 11x3 sequence I think that would have been much quicker. Just wanted to share in case anyone else was wondering the same!

@alexc4012
@alexc4012 5 жыл бұрын
@@zacharia4061 100 digits is really just something like 10 phone numbers, it's not that bad. His picture at 4:50 was really helpful, because I could memorize things 1 line at a time, in 3 digit segments, kind of like a phone number. Just took pen and paper, and went at it. It's not too hard with Pi, because I think as you go through it there are some lines that are really easy to memorize, like: 197 169 399 is something like the 5th or 6th line. The previous line has a 279 to make it easy for the 197 to "click", and 169 399 is really easy to memorize but itself. I think as you go through, there are a lot of patterns like this that help you get through it pretty easily. Try it if you don't believe me! I think anyone can get Pi down in under an hour without the Major System tbh.

The only flaw in the Major System is that not all the numbers don't have a relation to the consonant sounds. I use a variation that Derren Brown used in his book Tricks of the Mind: 0 = s, z 1 = l (looks like a lower case L) 2 = n (two downward strokes in lower case N) 3 = m (three downward strokes in lower case M) 4 = r (ends in R) 5 = f, v 6 = b, p (looks like lower case B) 7 = t, d (looks like upper case T) 8 = sh, ch, j 9 = g, k (looks like lower case G) This way the numbers resemble or relate to the letters they represent (apart from 8) which creates more of a short cut

Thanks Mike. I went ahead and I have memorized the first 126 digits of pi in 2 days. 30 in the first day. the other 96 in the next day. I followed a different memory technique to learn it. Instead of copying to sounds/words, I stayed with numbers, my mind is good with numbers. I just split pi into 18 strings of 7 digit numbers. Then learnt a new string when I was ready.

I'm 85 and recently memorized 80 digits of pi in twenty minutes, about 70 digits beyond reason or practicality as far as I'm concerned, using no system whatsoever. When I do use a system to remember something--something worth learning-- it is only for rehersal, and the system is very simple; I just go from one place to another, places in my imagination where I know that I have stored something. For me, merely knowing that a place SHOULD have something that I put into will prompt the recall provided that I have gone to the place before and rehersed what I had learned and remembered. Sometimes I just visually unroll a huge mental tapestry that has on it, systematized, schema of what I want to keep in storage. If something is fuzzy or missing, I just do my homework and then revisit the schema, and usually, where I have erred or failed is thereafter easier to remember than what I had got right. unless I'm working a KZbin test, however, I bother to remember only what gives me pleasure to know or is useful to me. The rest i dispose of sooner or later, because the mind needs a periodic house cleaning. I still remember the 80 digits. Now the problem is to forget them.
