My "tip" for vocabulary is using a diary where you write everyday in the language you're learning. Even if you are a beginner and you don't have a big vocabulary this helps a lot. You can just write a word or a sentence about your day, and if you don't know a word just search it. This really helps to remember everyday words. Right now I write my diary in English, Korean and Japanese and it works!! 😄

Definitely recommend. Just commit to a few sentences every day. For 2019, I committed to just three, but so far I have written more every day. It helps you acquire vocabulary that you will actually use to talk about what you do, what you like, your feelings, dreams etc. A lot of lists of "common words" flashcard lists have a bunch of vocab I personally wouldn't use. They are based on newspapers, I believe, so a ton of political and economics vocab. I never talk or read about these things in my native language, so learning them in a foreign one is a waste. We all live different lives and have different interests and we need to acquire the vocab that fits US. It of course also helps you remember the words better because if you look up "argument" because you had one with your boyfriend and then write about it, the word argument is now tied to an experience you personally had and no longer just some random word.

Heyy, I've been learning English too as my second language for 2 years. It's getting better and better. I can give you some tips for fluency: 1. Talk to yourself, try to plan your day in your language you're learning. 2. Try to talk with other peoples in that language because it sounds different in your head, and it's also easier (in your mind). 3. Maybe it's a little hard for you to understand English when vloggers speak, but don't worry. As time passes you will understand because your listening skills will be improved. 4. The most important tip is to trust yourself and don't give up. I also recommend you to watch movies/series with English subtitles and maybe to learn another language (besides English) in English. For example, my mother tongue is Romanian (Romania, Europe) and I learn Korean but lessons are in English. I would like to talk more and maybe to be friends, If You want so, just text me . It put me in a “sad” space where I kept wondering if I would ever be able to improve...! Though I did find that I remember things faster by talking to Korean friends and using words with them/when they use a word I don’t know. I do have to search up things A LOT to make sentences, but i guess it’s just a part of learning! Talking to Korean people puts me in a constant curious state, I always search up new grammar structures and words, and that part has been a lot of fun!! Thank you for always being such a inspiration~!

7:05 that wa cute Lindie. My favourite method is Anki and Quizlet, I am too lazy to make my own flashcards, I download what's on the platform. I think emersion is the most effective method, when I learn a word while talking to a friend or from a movie, in a context as you said, it really sticks in my brain. There is also a difference between active and passive vocabulary, sometimes you think you know a word, because you understand it, but when you need it in a conversation for example it just does not come and it is so annoying, sometimes I look into the dictionnary and find it, yes I know I am lucky to have a patient language partner.

I use flashcards in a matching game. So I write the alphabet and try to put them in order. Or lets say making a sentence, each card has a word and I have to make the sentence using them. Later on I can make it more difficult, as well as make words with the cards I have already made.

I remember reading in my cognitive psychology studies about the way something can be maintained in memory by re-exposing yourself to a word at longer and longer periods apart. Learn a word. Test it 5 minutes later. Test it 1 hour later. Test it 1 day later. Test it 1 month later and then Test it 1 year later. I wrote a program on my computer to do this with vocabulary to test me on hundreds of words and it worked. I was surprised at how well I remembered all the words.
@mchobbit29516 жыл бұрын
I love that this doesn't focus on flashcards but alternatives. I haaate flashcards and I am often told that I need to "accept the boredom and just do them, you will never get a decent vocabulary without flashcards. Not if you want to read real books, watch movies and 'watch the news' (why is it always that one? I don't even watch the news in my native language)". Even if my methods (looking up words as I read and write as needed, translating songs, watching shows and movies) is slower, it's just more enjoyable and feels more genuine. I'm learning the words when I need them or when a medium I chose to read or watch introduces them to me rather than based on "this is a the 350 most common word according to someone, so you are learning this now). Just because certain words are common doesn't mean that I personally need them. Many "politics" words are on 5000/10,000 most common words lists but I NEVER talk about politics in my native language. So whether I eventually pick these words up or not makes little difference to me. I have more use for the verb "to give birth to a calf" which is probably very uncommon, than I do for say, committee or political party or whatever.

I'm learning Italian and there is a KZbin channel that posts Italian fairy tales. The subtitles are in Italian and not English, so you probably need to know some words to know what's going on but I usually watch it and have a translating app pulled up too. It helps too because it's animated so you might not need a translator for every phrase or word. Also I've used labeling before but never thought about writing my shopping list or to do list (I'm a nerd) in another language. Thanks for the tips!

Using the add-on is very efficient and creating bunch of cards with sound clips from Forvo takes no time at all. I should be though the list in about 6 months ;). A while ago I found someone on KZbin who learned a few languages and decided to make a video on how she learned them. She just started learning Arabic so she showed how she was learning that and she used the same method for the other languages she learned. One thing she talked about is that she found a vlogger from Egypt who’s videos are in Arabic. If the guy keeps mentioning a particular word and it seems like he’s referring to something you can see on screen, she’ll try and guess what that word means, write it down and then look it up after the video to see if she’s right

The Greek alphabet has 24 characters instead of 26 characters like the Latin alphabet. There is no single Greek character for the "b" or "d" sound. Instead you have to combine two characters to achieve these sounds, m + p (μ + π) and n + t (ν + τ) respectively. I will not say it's a better writing system than Latin :-)

i think Anki is actually a really important tool, its UI has a bit of a learning curve but its worth it. Look up a tutorial on how to navigate and fully utilize Anki's features if it intimidates you. Anki gives you the ability to make fully customizable decks and add new ones as you come across new words you want to memorize, and if you don't feel like you could be up to making your own you can download pre-made decks from other users. Its sometimes better over writing them in notes because it's much easier to pull out your phone to add a new card than it is to pull out a notebook and write it down. You can then do some rote memorization techniques as your studying the card if you prefer to get writing practice in. I would honestly say that Anki is a must-have if you are learning a language.

Recently I've been playing stardew valley in japanese, which is a game I've played for many many hours in English. I can navigate the game well enough already but when I find an interesting or meaningful word I don't know I write it down in my "interesting words" list! I have this book for both Chinese and Japanese and it's like a little dictionary of words I would actually like to use and would use! I also spend lots of time trying to talk to myself in my target language, and so when I hit a word I have to say in English I know that's a new word I need to go and learn! so I go look that word up! this way I'm focusing on language that is actually useful for me first and foremost!

Hi Lindie! My comment is late, but I hope you see it. I want to thank you for this video so much. I find those tips really great and useful. I studied Japanese in my middle school and Chinese in high school, because I wanted to go to college in China. Recently when I came back to my habit on watching anime, I got a desire to learn Japanese again, but I've forgotten half of what I learned in middle school. I often watch events of anime voice actors which don't have English subtitles, but only Chinese. I thought of it as a great way to even improve my Chinese (since my Chinese was getting down recently as well). Sometimes I watch some movies with Eng sub, then watch without subs and I try to translate my favorite scenes in my own way. I don't know if anyone does these, but I actually find it fun. I also like listening to Chinese and Japanese audio books, but I couldn't find any yet, except audio dramas. If you do watch Japanese movies, or listen to any audio book, I hope you can recommend me some good ones. (Any genre doesn't matter, but my preference mostly goes to BL romance XD) There is one movie I'm looking all over internet to find its non sub version. Or with Chinese sub. But I couldn't find. Its name is 'Hidamari ga kikoeru'. If you'd see it anywhere, pls let me know.. Thank you so much. I just thought of sharing these few methods that I use my own. I don't know if they're helpful though.

Something I have been doing to learn Japanese is I made a notebook that I write all of my notes in and then I incorporate my TL into each page including a fully Japanese table of contents since I am freakishly organized.

English is not my first language and I learned it in 3/4 years (I learned because I take a course here in my city), it got so much time but it worth it. Now I'm starting to learn Japanese, i really want to learn, I use so much apps that can help me, and I write everything in my notebook, but sometimes(or days) I didn't study because I'm to lazy, I then I give up...but I'm here, trying again, and getting motivation.

I am trying to teach myself Irish (Gaeilge) and struggle to find tv shows or books with that language as the main language or even with subtitles. It's unfortunate that it's dying, and I love it so much.

Yeah I did something similar to this before. While it was a great short term strategy for me. The best way for vocabulary to stick is by listening and speaking rather than reading and writing (At least for me anyway).

I agree with you about learning new words in context, which is why I rarely use Chinese flashcards - instead preferring Chinese readers. One particular advantage is that a new word often has different meanings or functions depending on the context. I'd love to be able to watch Chinese series with Chinese subtitles, but unfortunately Netflix doesn't offer them where I live. I've just put in a request at Netflix for their inclusion in future series... so... fingers crossed. I can occasionally find the same series on the Internet, but they are either bad quality copies or full of adverts that require signing up for a subscription service in order to be able to watch them ad-free.

Your shortcut method of taking down notes is actually pretty nifty not only in language learning but in other learning aspects as well!! I mean, yeah, why write it longer when you can just write it in a character or in another language where the word seems shorter XD

how do you actually practice making your own sentence ! like conversational sentences by yourself? does making diary entry in the target language helps even without getting it check by native? Does constant practice diary/journal entry and novel / blog entry reading helps in the long run?

+Michelle Poleo really? I am learning Spanish because of my father is from Mexico and a large portion of my family is Mexican however i was born and raised in the US speaking only English. I am learning Japanese because i like it and i have a friend from Japan. I was learning Korean but i stopped to focus on Spanish and Japanese cuz it was too much for me
@06kk626 жыл бұрын
@@anthonygarcia1398 what you should do with Spanish is telling your dad to talk to you and text you ONLY in spanish, he can become your Spanish speaker friend (?) And with Japanese... Every tip of Lindie helps, but what helped me the most was writing diaries and watching reality shows or dramas! Also talking with Japanese people. I hope you can get fluent one day~ ¡Suerte!

@@QuizmasterLaw The vocabulary learning strategy you are referring to is called the mnemonic keyword method. It has been known since 1975 and involves linking all or part of unfamiliar words in the target language to acoustically similar keywords in your first language or whatever language you have a good command of. Although this method is commonly used for learning foreign vocabulary words, it doesn't work so well for everyone. Studies suggest that among other things the method increases retrieval times and affects recall accuracy.
