I recently found a piano roll of this tune for sale in a curiosity shop. On the bottom of the Box it says "To Uncle De. Christmas 1924." I had to buy it and gladly paid the five dollar cost. I'm so glad to find this tune as it was sung so many decades ago and have a better idea of the sound and sentiment behind a loving niece's or nephew's Christmas gift to a favoured uncle.

Beautiful period looking images accompanied by the voice of Irving Kaufman doing a sentimental ballad. He was underrated by posterity in my opinion. Nice upload!

Hi Anthony, I liked the opening of the video.... Very lovely tree-lined paths. Yes....the song does have the classic 1920's sound/feeling. I noticed the album was priced 75 cents. That seems inexpensive...but actually I suppose in todays money it would equal about 12 to 15 dollars. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I thought you might appreciate it. I keep the "Memory Lane" boxed roll on a round two tier table next to a 1917 Victor Talking Machine that has been in my family for 45 years. The table was purchased by my great-great grandmother back in 1905. I thought it an appropriate place for the roll.

The original lyrics are: Stars are gleaming, day is o'er. Moonlight beaming on the shore. Still I'm lonely, thinking only Of those lovely days of yore. I am with you wandering through memory lane Living the years, laughter and tears, over again. I am dreaming yet of the night we met When life was a lovely refrain. You were so shy saying goodbye there in the dawn. Only a glance full of romance, then you were gone. Though my dreams are in vain my love will remain Strolling again memory lane with you.

I love this music and lyric but it's just too short for such an empathy builder. I did the unmentionable, I wrote a lyric for a 2nd chorus. With apologies, here 'tis: "We Were just two, dancing anew in Mem'ry Lane . . .sharing the years, laughter and Cares over again . . .for our thoughts were set on the night we met . . .when life was A lovely refrain. But then you wept and said goodbye at break of dawn, I glanced Away turned back to say . . .but you were gone. Though my dreams were in vain, My love will remain . . .strolling again, Memory Lane with you." It's just an idea for making this endearing waltz last longer. After I play it in F, I modulate down to B-flat for the second chorus. Thanks for the post of this grand old melody.

Having not heard back, after his first rather unpleasant comment, from Fortress Fighter (is this his site?) I would just like to ask: is that beautiful couple of measure introduction before the record (0:01-0:10) actually begins by any chance a clip from "It's a Wonderful Life"? It is lovely enough to listen to without continuing on to Irving the Irritating's wretched rendering of a not very pretty (sorry,...) tune. The verse is just better than the chorus, which is is just better than an aspirin melting in the mouth...

the introduction is from a piece called Serenade for a Wealthy Widow.

@@abendstunde49 Thank. I listened to that serenade a while ago, didn't remember that lovely couple of measures. We had the "Toy Trumpet" as kids, must have played it to death. Our mother probably trashed it, not a music fan by any means...

PS. Sept '24.Speed is too fast. If you can slow it down about 4 RPMs, Irv won't sound quite his usual wretched self. The higher speed makes him sound more tinny and nasal than he already is. Up to you. Thanks. (This will suffice, also, as response to Isaac SmelcZahn, who wanted one. Pah!)

Ah, yes, Irving the Awful in his early days. Listen to him and Jack singing "Bolshevik" or his only half-decent recording ever, of "Singing a Vagabond Song".

@@IsaacSmelcZhan My comments on Irving are on various sites. If you must: basically, ugly, nasal voice, formidably ugly style, awful attempts at sexy whoops and pitch shifts, wrecking many otherwise musical efforts by many fine jazz sidemen of the '20s. An 'E' for enthusiam, though, strangely, he clearly had some serious vocal studies in the later '20s, lending to some less repulsive singing on some records I've heard on the internet, but never ran across in 50 years. Do you know what beautiful singing sounds like? (Some Caruso, though he's of an earlier style), but try John McCormack, Beniamino Gigli, Jussi Bjoerling, and if it comes down to vocalists of the '20s, you almost never go wrong with Scrappy Lambert as long as they don't make him sing too high... I will remove this comment once you've seen it. This is for you, since you asked. 🐸 For 20's, also, Smith Ballew, Franklyn Baur, and (old style, church singer but very popular thru 20s, Henry Burr). ABI. Anybody but Irving. Found more good songs murdered by him..
