Celestron needs to hire you for its how-to videos. Seriously, they'd sell so much more equipment since I'm guessing a lot of ppl like me bought one and didn't use it because the instructions were so awful. Thanks for the great, simple-to-understand, instructions.

I have the same Celestron Nexstar 8, and I find the included Alt-Az mount quite adequate for moon and Sun (using a Baader solar filter) and brighter planet and DSO astrophotography. However, I bought a second-hand Celestron CG-5 GEM for long-duration CCD-autoguided stacked shoots for fainter objects. The Alt-Az is fine for a quick set-up and optical viewing, but the GEM makes things much easier when I want to get technical.

Nice upload 👌 i have the Celestron Nexstar Evolution 9.25" alt/az mounted on the Pro HD Wedge. No 'Meridian Flip' no 'Balancing' using this set up. Using the SkyPortal App allows you to polar align to any star or planet 🔭 my scope has the Starsense Autoalign camera 👍

I have the Celestron Wedge, but it's hugely weighty. I may well sell it. I find a second-hand CG-5 GEM far more practicable with my Nexstar 8, and I only had to do the balancing once, good enough so it stays put with the axes unlocked. And then it's done. It's not as if you have to rebalance every time you mount the telescope.

Actually sir that works with Mobile and Telescope can marry as in, use a WiFi module on the ports with the telescope and sync it with your phone either use Skyportal or any other apps that can sync with Telescope and this works like a charm... I have tested it too you can navigate the the scope through your phone and even direct the scope to the right celestial boddy you want to focus on the App uses GPS network from your phone and the wifi module connects the scope to your phone...To add love your presentation style simple and easy to understand 👍

Thanks for the very informative set up!! Go easy on the professional endorsements... :) yes maybe a bit much to see Mr. Spock getting paid to advertise their products but it also gets people interested and perhaps involved in the astronomy society. :) Thanks again.

Does it not need to be polar aligned before you do a normal alignment?

Any compass be it an old 'analogue' one, or the one built into your phone rely on magnetism (that's what a compass does of course). So whatever the type, it can and will be influenced by ferromagnetic substances (the steel legs of your tripod for instance). A GPS system cannot tell what direction is north unless you are moving. So please, get any compass alignment done, well away from anything that will distort the field, whether it's a dial or your mobile phone.

These days, for purely visual use, an Alt-Az mount is more than sufficient. EQ mounts are the domain of astrophotographers wanting to take longer than a 30’ photo.

Polar Scope Align Pro in the App Store; if you are Apple. Precise even through your living room ceiling. Problem solved. Regards....I just set it on the scope and you are polar aligned in seconds. Even in a blinding snowstorm lol...

Wedges were very popular with sct telescopes and worked well, Meade SCT'S often came with a wedge as standard bulit in. They worked as well as a GEM mount

I have a polar scope that has a small circle with Polaris on it, but it also has Crux Australis and a circle with Sigma Octans on it for use in the Southern Hemisphere.

He admits marketing influences people. Then he demonstrates it. He says that he can't justify a mount costing more than the car transporting it. I read into this on many levels. First it is the fact that humans have been programed by marketing to think that they need to have a car. So he immediately assumes that this is a statement that is inherent, and needs no explanation. Second he demonstrates that not only do you need a car but that it must be either the most or the second most expensive thing that you own. The marketing has programed this individual to, without conscious thought, delegate the largest or second largest sum of money ever spent at once in his lifetime to go to the automotive industry. Finally he demonstrates the practical mind enslavement to automotive dependence. He is physically giving a presentation on telescopes, he is not giving a presentation on cars. I am assuming his passion lies with telescopes and that he does not moonlight as an automotive lecturer, yet he cannot justify allocating his money the way he sees fit. He must spend more on his car. Anyway, just a thought. I hope he gives a lot of presentations to get enough money to buy a car more expensive than the telescope he wants so that he can then some day buy the telescope he wants.
