So far memrise has given me a better experience than Duolingo. I've been able to retain more words with memrise than I have Duolingo. It's helped me start to interact with people a bit more.

I used Duo for 18 months and dropped , after 34 days I founded MEMRISE, love it a lot, the dialogues, videos are priceless. I can see with real people the use of French , love it a thousand times. Gloria

Great review! I used Duolingo for about a year and Memrise for just a few months. After a year, when I moved to Italy, I found out I could recall Memrise's sentences more easily and actually used them to communicate with people rather than Duolingo words. What I also don't like about the Duolingo app is the quality of the voices, especially for the Italian course. They are so annoying that I can barely concentrate on the sentence or word itself.

I absolutely agree with you. Only problem for any online language learning platform is that users gets bored after couple of weeks, especially with free version. Most of them get back to traditional learning methods, and maybe use this as additional tool. Would be interesting to find someone, who learned some language only from one of the online platforms. Like is that even possible? :)

Duolingo removed all its forums in March 2022. Yes, the only place where advanced learners help beginners overcome the shenanigans of Duolingo is gone. Now, I feel that Duolingo should PAY ME to use their apps because I'm still trying to report mistranslations and nonsensical sentences. At least don't use Duolingo for German and Chinese. Oh my goodness gracious their Chinese lessons. They don't make me angry anymore, they make me crack up.

Such a loss for the duo lingo community.

What's wrong with German, buddy? Will not I be able to learn at least a2 level? I am not talking about speaking cause it needs separate practice.

Your complaint about the microphone clicking twice for me is a great advantage. As a beginner I struggle to construct a sentence within the microphone limited listening time. I have to restart it sometimes up to 6 times until I can utter the whole sentence without the microphone stopping. So I'll try memrise in addition to Duolingo just for this

Memrise does seem to be better at learning and retaining the language. I like the videos with Memrise too. Duolingo does have awkward sentences from time to time, when the word meanings don't seem to fit very well into a sentence. I agree with you about favoring Memrise.

Interesting the videos in Memrise sound like they could be useful and I will have to trying their free version to try it out. I've been doing Duolingo and recently moved from the free version to the paid and that helps. I am just starting to use some of the extras. I think I've hit the first step up from total beginner because the lessons are getting harder a lot of new words and longer sentences. My one wish in DuoLingo is for a option to hear the phrase spoken more. They do say words and phases some in the quizzes but be nice to be able to click and hear all the questions or answer to help get the sound in my ear. I'm starting to be able to read Spanish better than hear it. That is where the Memrise might be better with all the videos. As always thanks for the informative reviews.

Great insights here! Thanks for the detailed comment :) This is helpful. And totally agree - we also wish Duolingo had more of an audio component. Definitely give the Memrise free version a try and see what you think

It depends on your goal. For me Duolingo is too grindy, often you see words appear over and over. My gold in using this kind of app is to have a brief run through on the basic vocabulary, then go to watch videos in target language.

I used to use Duolingo but as you mentioned, free apps don't offer as much now without an upgrade. To learn French I'll probably be looking to move elsewhere

Duolingo has a special place in my heart. It's where I began learning French from scratch. It's helped me maintain a daily habit when I had low motivation or was just getting back in the swing of things with a language I was trying to learn. At the end of the day, though, I just don't think it gets the job done. Certainly not on its own, but even as a supplement? Idk. For me it stopped being fun.

My German is about C1 level and my advice is don't do German on Duolingo, it's horrible. It's not just awkward, it's very often completely wrong. I think the reason behind this is that Duolingo relies on freelance contributors and Germans are unbelievably stubborn. If the German sentence is "mit dem Auto zur Bank fahren" then they won't accept "go to the bank by car" because they can't wrap their head around how you can translate "fahren" (en: drive) to "go". They'll only accept "drive" or "travel". Here is an example of them being completely wrong - "Der Bankkaufmann kann Ihnen helfen" (The bank clerk can help you). Duolingo insists you translate "Bankkaufmann" to "banker", but a banker is not a clerk, it just doesn't make sense. I'm learning French on Duolingo too, and it's the complete opposite. So you can see, it's not really Duolingo's problem, Germans are so pedantic that it gives you a headache to deal with them. Trust me I've been dealing with them for more than 7 years.

OK I’m not going to say Duolingo is a bad language learning app but I will say there are about 15 others I can think of that are better. Only about two of those are free though so I’ve got to give Duolingo that one. The ads are so distracting though
