I adored this book. The dynamic between Cuddy and Detritus is so great. The friendship they develop throughout the book is so sweet and fun, with Cuddy helping teach Detritus and then Detritus showing his true intelligence (under the right conditions lol) and the two completely break down the barriers of racism and hate between the two. And then at the end whenever Detritus sits in the corner and takes off his helmet Cuddy made for him and just stares at it 😭😭😭

Sir Pterry can cram more meaning, emotion, and nuance into a single sentence then some authors can put in an entire book. And I am all for deeper, more in depth talks about these books, just because there is so much there on so many levels. Also yes Carrot is just, such a wonderful Good Boy! Who is also scarily good at getting what he wants when he sets his mind to it, without ever ceasing to be just the sweetest, most innocent Good Boy, see him bluffing his way into the Fool's Guild.

Carrot’s growth as leader is fascinating and it felt like a parallel to Vimes and how he became who he is. As Carrot becomes the unquestioned leader in the second half, he is giving commands even to people like Colon, he starts referring to Colon by first name like Vimes does, he has principles similar to Vimes like being against involving magic. Carrot asks questions and investigates in a similar way and he just has a much more serious tone. It feels like you see how the investigation and leadership role and the city in general are affecting him. And it’s like, I can understand more how Vimes ended up as a wandering hopeless drunk passed out in a gutter at the beginning of book 1 lol.

I love this format that you are doing for Pratchett’s discworld series. I love the city watch and I’m glad you are enjoying it too. An idea, and I completely understand if you don’t do this, is to read “The Truth” after “The Fifth Elephant.” It’s not a city watch book, but it heavily involves the watch and more importantly you see the city watch from the perspective of a new character who doesn’t always agree with the watch’s principles/methods of doing things. It’s a ways away and just a suggestion- although viewers may not love the idea because EVERYONE loves “Night Watch” and this would delay it by a month haha.

The talking dog actually comes from an earlier book, you might not NEED to read the other books in the series, but they are still part of the world. 20:36 I think I interpreted this scene in the patrician's office different. Because Carrot is Simple. He's not Stupid. Carrot is being WILLFULLY ignorant in this scene. Like how Vimes is. Carrot Knows full well every aspect of whats being said. He read that Evidence. He knows that there's every chance of him being heir. He knows that he Matches the Prophesy 1:1. He knows that EVERYONE would follow him. But it's not what he believes. Carrot thinks that every man should think for himself, and Not because "Captain/King Carrot" said so. Carrot is more than Capable of BEING in charge. The man is a more suitable watchman than all of day watch. But he likes having his head on his shoulders. And He certainly wouldn't like being at the End of Diskworlds Second Gonne with Vetinari at the trigger.

We see hints of what that can grow from here, where she's the type of undead that can pass (and her landlady is understanding of the undead because her daughter happens to be a werewolf). But it gets built on in later books to the point that she's sitting between Carrot and her wolf ex explaining that she's not a human and she's not a wolf, she's a WEREWOLF - and, no, neither species trusts her! She also becomes besties with the trans metaphor character, which is super cute.

I can't resist even though it's a year old video. Carrot knows full well he's king and if this was Carrot from the first book he'd have thrown down the dictator and taken the throne. But the whole central theme of Pratchett is when fantasy , narrative imperative, meets reality and humanity. Yes he would be an amazing king, he has the "power" to do it, to bring people together and usher in a golden age. But what then? Who will the next king be? Will they be as good? Carrot in this book realizes that the city is strange and backwards but *works*, the city doesn't need a king, it *does* need a good honest police man. That dialog you quote finishes with a threat. Carrot threatens that if he sees the city start to go wrong he will take control and he can because the narrative actively wants him to but at the moment he realizes that he can do more good by actually being a man of the people rather then a monarch (and the reason for this is Vimes who's broken the idealism in Carrot and put in reality) .

This format is great, but if you have the time for even more in depth discussion I'd be all for it! I'm in any case really happy that you are reading Pratchett, who is my other favourite author. The other one is Eiichiro Oda... I agree with the others who suggested that you try going back to some of the other books before finishing the Watch arc. Pratchett does kind of develop the world a bit like Oda, in that he expands it through storytelling, and Night Watch especially is a bit like going to Water Seven without first reading Skyepia. Or skipping Fishman Island, maybe. Some of the standalones are a bit like Long Ring Long Land/Foxy Pirates, though. I mean, I still love Pyramids, but it's not his strongest work (said with love). Anyway, if you want a reading order suggestion (like you haven't had a hundred already, lol) Feet of Clay (Watch) Jingo (Watch) This is actually one of my favourites. Then some witches! Why not Death? Well, I think there are some scenes in these books which are a great foundation before going all into Death, despite one of the Death books being technically earlier. So: Wyrd Sisters Witches Abroad (my fave of the first three!) Lords and Ladies Maskerade (One of my absolute favourites of all his books.) After this, Death. Reaper Man Soul Music Hogfather (This is another of his best, IMO). After this, I'd pick some standalones (they're still connected): Pyramids (Hey, it's got a lot of Assassins guild stuff, and that's always fun!) Moving Pictures (I LOVE this, one of his funniest IMO, even as someone who knew very little of old Hollywwod the first time I read it) Small Gods After this, either read his first three, or move on to the next Witch or Watch book. Option 1: The Colour of Magic The Light Fantastic (They're really two parts of the same story, and starts off both the wizard books and explore the Dragons more). Equal Rites (Includes Granny Weatherwax, but I still think it's more of a Wizard book) Option 2: Carpe Jugulum (Witched against Vampires! This is another great one.) The Fifth Elephant (Watch. Vimes goes abroad, faces the forces of darkness/diplomacy) After this 'd go back again, and start with the Wizard/Rincewind books. But if you haven't read Colour of Magic, Light Fantastic and Equal rites yet, wait until you have. Sourcery Interesting Times The Last Continent (One of his absolute funniest, but I find all of Rincewinds books hilarious.) The Last Hero (This can also wait until after the next batch). If not, go on with Watch/Ankh-Morpork. The Truth (technically standalone, but I agree with the person who said that it's best to have read this before Night Watch) Thief of Time (Death book really, could be read here or after Night Watch). Night Watch Here, you could either start with the Tiffany Aching books, and/or the Maurice book which are technically aimed at younger readers, or keep on with the Watch/Ankh-Morpork. Option 1: The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents The Wee Free Men A Hat Full of Sky Option 2 (some would argue that this is his absolute peak, and I may be one of them, though by Snuff you might start to sense a bit of a decline): Monstrous Regiment Going Postal Thud! Making Money Unseen Academicals Snuff After this, the rest of Tiffany Aching (or all of it, if you haven't yet). Wintersmith I shall wear midnight His last two books were impacted by his illness a lot, and you only really need to read them if you're a completionist, i think. Raising Steam The Shepherds Crown

One thing I like in this story is how,ultimately, it's not Edward d'eath or his killer who's the big bad, its the gonne itself. Either as a literally independant entity as is suggested at the end, or a more metaphorical angle, the gonne is the book's main antagonist via the sheer destruction it can wrought. It doesn't require the skill and strenght of other wepaons familiar to everyone, its less tempermental than magic, it just gives one the power to kill with ease. andd regardless of whether the gonne itself is alive, that idea CORRUPTS, allowing the gonne to turn people into murderers. Vimes gets SO CLOSE to falling under that influence, that power, but he's snapped out of it because he is NOT that kind of man deep down Putting aside any politics this may bring up, this is a damn cool idea for a villain. A weapon that turns you to the dark side purely through how easy it makes it, how powerful that ease makes you feel.

Havent finish the video but tovunderstand the talikimg dog, you would need to read "moving pictures". No spoilers from me, but it gives more insight about detritus. In my case i read in publication order. I recently fisinished 39 of the 41 books so far

Great book. I don't want to tell you how long it took me to get the joke behind the guild of 'seamstresses'; and Detritus is the best of the best.

I wouldn't recommend necessarily go full-in on the Watch books since they are kind of hit-and-miss after this point, and many of the characters' best moments happen in other books. Maybe break it up with a Witch, Death or standalone book. I personally think the Witches are the most consistent arc.

Gestapo? LOL. GASPODE is quite a fun recurring character - such a clever, scruffy little mutt.

@@britneynicolewrites WHAT?! I kinda wanted to try this series. But I don't think I can commit to such a long series! And yeah, I'm one of those weirdos that would force myself to read EVERYTHING, otherwise I'd constantly be wondering if I missed out on something important. Yegads, writers! Either write standalones or do shorts series of 3 books. That's all you really need! Ain't nobody got time for a 41 book series, LOL!

@@Yesica1993 Well, you can read just one subseries like Night Watch series. Those are shorter (obviously)

To all: don’t be bothered by 40 plus books they are not as connected. They are basically standalones set in the same world with same characters and many books can be read out of the order. I am massive Discworld fan since 2002 and still haven’t read all of them and it’s okay. I urge everyone to pick up a Discworld book and try. It’s truly something special.

There are 41. They're not very long, most only being about 300-400 pages long. I read them all in about 6 months.

Discworld is one of the only ones I have an actual issue with trying the ebooks, but only because of flipping back and forth to get the footnotes in. Ialways seem to lose my place, my bookmark is there one minute… …gonne the next 😂😂🔫
@michaelsommers2356 Жыл бұрын
Just tap on the footnote number, and the footnote pops up. Dismiss it, and you're back in the text.

@@michaelsommers2356 yeah, it was a long way to go for a joke/wordplay using "gonne" instead of gone 🤡 I amuse myself, that's all that matters
@michaelsommers2356 Жыл бұрын
@@destro6971 As I said elsewhere, I think 'gonne' is supposed to be pronounced as 'gun'. Compare the poet John Donne.
