Whenever I hear this song,I picture Greg sitting in a tree playing his flute with his little stuffed koala next to him.That indelible image is in my mind forever.As much as I love the whole band,both as a unit and as five very talented individuals, what I miss the most about the original Men At Work is Greg Ham and his delightful,unique humor,his incredible musical talent and those twinkling blue eyes.Rest in peace,Greg.

Did you ever have a similar toy koala when you were young? They were popular when I was an infant in the '60's and I still have mine, I'm not embarrassed to say. They were made with kangaroo skin in case you were wondering.

@@warrenmilford1329 No,unfortunately I didn't.I was also born in the 60s(1968),but in the US,so all I had were teddy bears.😁I would have loved a toy koala,though!

@@starletohara1631 Thank you for your reply, and please excuse my presumption that you were Aussie. From the way you spoke of the band, I just presumed you were, but then I had forgotten how big they were in the States. Yea, I was born in '64 and I named mine Kootchie Koala. He's in a storage box amongst my stuff. I might dig him out and say G'day after all these years. It was so good to pretend, as a child, that I had my very own koala. Anyway stay well.

@@warrenmilford1329 No worries,mate!😁Ha ha!Yes,I am from America,but MAW were huge in the US in 1982-83 and are still my favorite band ever.It goes without saying that I had an enormous crush on Greg,which was a large part of the reason why I loved them so much;but there's no denying what a talented group of musicians they all were,too.
@warrenmilford13293 жыл бұрын
@@starletohara1631 Ha, Ha, love it. It's so good to know that an Aussie band had such a huge impact in the States, and that you like them so much. I saw them play in the early '80's. At that time not many U.S. folk knew much about our land, so they really put us on the international map, so to speak. And yes Greg was a talented muso, and a good lookin' fella as well, and I say that as a red blooded Aussie hetro bloke, (which means a man). What a tragedy he passed away so young. Here's a hint that will blow an Aussies mind if you ever happen to meet one. Obviously saying no worries, mate will put you in good stead, as is G'day mate. But if you really wanna bedazzle them, with your knowledge of our lingo, say to them, G'day cobber, which like mate, dates back to our convict days, and means the same thing as mate. They will look at you in stunned disbelief, then have the biggest smile on their face that you know such a word. By the way, if I could send you a toy koala, like Greg's in the vid, I most definitely would. I don't think they make them out of Roo skin anymore. Great to chat with you Starlet. Great user name btw.

I love this song! ❤️ The first time I heard this song when it came out, it has been on an audiocassette with many other hits from this time, a common habit in the 80s, we exchanged the cassettes with other teenies. :-) There was Down Under and Helpless Automaton on the cassette and I didn't even know that it was the same band but I loved both songs and was very happy as I discovered that. As you can imagine, I bought the album (Business As Usual) and later (Cargo) and listened to all these masterpieces over and over again and, I was 13 in 1980, you can imagine that it's the best compliment you can make in the 80s, because this decade was full of great epic bands and singers and hits. But Men At Work hit me then right into my musical center. Colin, thank you very much! Greetings to the band and Cecilia...before I forget...I am very happy that the next song will be Be Good Johnny! :-) And I'm dying to know what song #20 will be. ;)

I'm fairly sure that the whole copyright case only started after it was , incorrectly, put as a question on that show "Spicks and Specks", hosted by Adam Hills. The question was something like, what old Australian song did they get the flute solo from? The answer, as far as the show's researchers thought was, "Kookaburra Sit's In The Old Gum Tree". The copyright holders obviously found out about it, then legal action ensued. Before this there were no concerns at all about it, as far as I know.

Still a brilliant song after all these years with a voice that defies the years. Reminds me of what was said by Ray Wylie Hubbard in reference to his song "Redneck Mothers." The most imporant question in songwriting is not your vocal range or even how well you sing. It is not about how well you play an instrument. What is most important is - can you sing this song for the next 50 years. Obviously, Colin has and will. God bless you and your family and thank your for giving us decades of musical enjoyment, While I like this song a lot and cover it, myself, my favorite is probably "Overkill" and I really liked Colin's cameo in "Scrubs."
