I just wish they'd of had more time together as a band because there was alotta talent up there & I'd of loved to seen them & their material after a good 10+ years together past the 96' - 97' tours.... The opening track is KILLER. Were these guys aware of how fucking AWESOME they were at the time (esp. Colin Hay, the backup vocalist and that powerhouse drummer)? Total pros, and such a UNIQUE and refreshing/relaxing/catchy sound. Nearly 40 years later and my opinion remains unchanged, regardless of the legions of bands since. LL
@larryandheather5 жыл бұрын
Man, these guys were a tight ensemble. Hay's superlative vocals, Speiser drumming his ass off, Ham with those great sax riffs, and Rees & Strykert were consummate pros as well. Just such a polished sound. This is one of those concerts that sounds like a studio album. They just don't make bands like this anymore.

There is something about MAW that reminds me of African (Jit or township ? ) music. The way Ron's and Colin's guitars work together with Jon's bass and Jerry's drums on Mr Entertainer gets me everytime.. That high voice with beautiful resonance whilst still maintaining a real depth to his tone. Colin's vibrato is just killer. The way he approaches modal melodies always flaws me. Love the way he lands on notes and doesn't always resolve to the most obvious choices. It gives the melodies a real angular shape. Not to mention, Greg's wonderful flute and sax adding a balance to Colin's voice. His percussion and synth also really adds great atmospheric timbres to the whole sound.

So true. It's really depressing to think how good these guys were on their first two albums, but just could NOT get along with each other to keep it going. And I'm not counting the third "Men At Work" album from 1985 that didn't even have John & Jerry on it and had Ron in a very limited role. This was a true BAND, as is evidenced from this video. The interplay between all of them during this show (especially on "Mr. Entertainer") incredible. It's a real shame that they couldn't reconvene at the end of '83 (or beginning of '84) and record a new album with some of the great new songs they were playing in concert during '83 (like The Longest Night, Coldfinger and Falling Down). Those three songs still had that MAW magic all over them. A new album with songs of that caliber would have definitely kept the hits coming for the group instead of relegating them to being more or less a footnote in rock history.

I'm a huge prog fan but this is perfect early 80's rock. Good playing, good drumming, really good songs - I read somewhere in a review that this 'filled The Police void' for a time, but I call shenanigans. Men At Work was fucking awesome all on it's own...

Saw them live in 1985 in Perth - I was only a kid around 12 who looked 9, and Colin signed his autograph for me..The lyrics, music composition, everything on Business as Usual is amazing! People still remember I was a huge MAW fan whenever i go to school reunions - funny! Thanks Colin for the music. RIP Greg.

Daniel Smith I'm an INXS fan as well - they had a huge backlog and released a lot more, yes I agree. Hutchence much more of a 'showman' in some ways than Hay. INXS much more cohesive with band members compared to MAW: hence their staying power. Have you listened to all 3 MAW albums? Although the last one was way over produced, I think they wrote more than one decent song! Basically I think they were a fantastic band in their own right (although shortlived) and had a totally different outlook to INXS therefore hard to compare.

I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I first heard, "Down Under." I use to listen to this concert when it first aired on Pay TV, here in Toronto. We couldn't afford the "pay" part of the service, so I could only listen the audio portion. Once in a while the scrambled signal would become clear. I would get excited, but it would only last a minute or less. Got to see them, live, in Tornoto when they opened for INXS. Good times...

Wow, I'm in my 20s again, even if just for a little while. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of concert's and even got a job as event staff for some years. But I regret never having seen this group. Ham was found dead on 19 April 2012 at his home in Carlton North, Melbourne, under mysterious circumstances. Though several newspapers listed his cause of death as a heart attack, the cause of death still remains a mystery. There have been allegations he died after a long battle with heroin addiction. Though his cause of death is still being debated, it's known that he was despondent over the copyright lawsuit filed against him and the members of Men At Work, for allegedly using a few bars from "Kookaburra" without permission for the flute riff in "Down Under". F*k Larrikin Music,
