I became a supporter of Chelsea when I was 7 because we did a tournament in gym class and that was the team assigned to me. I went to England when I was 17 and was in for a rude awakening. Every person I talked to called me a band-wagoner and pretty much berated me. It hurt because as a die hard Mets fan, I strongly believe I am anything but. Plus when we were growing up (I'm 25), Man United was by far the most famous team in the US. Probably because their success mixed with Beckham. Most people in my class laughed because Chelsea was a girls name, we had no idea. However, them winning is the easiest way to get sucked in. I wouldn't advise picking a team like West Ham. While I don't advise picking the best club, picking a club that has no shot at winning, with no players worth knowing, is a tough way to fall in love with a sport. I get if you are a fan, you should support them no matter what, but you simply will lose interest if your team can't win/ doesn't even get aired on TV. Like if I meet a British person who asks me about becoming an football fan, I wouldn't recommend them to the Browns. I would suggest a club like Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Everton. Good historic teams who are competitive. Not the best, but not hopeless.

I'm assuming Trenton Thunder is NYCFC? I'm more an ESPN FC viewer than Men in Blazers and keeping up with the latter's nicknames is difficult.

Teams pick you. So you go with the team that suits your personality. If you like rough tough aggressive team then you go for Stoke. If you like a team that buys all the stars with big money then Man city. Manchester United are the New York Yankees and Liverpool is the Boston Red Sox. Chelsea are the Lakers a successful team that attracts a lot of celebrity support because of it's location. Arsenal are the Knicks. A team that used to be good in the past, hugely popular in the city and around the world with many celebs as fans from around the world. Tottenham are the LA Clippers. A team that has potential to be good but always fails. They are also the team with a big Jewish and black Carribean support due to the area they are based in London. They tend to be the team Jewish people around the world support.

If you are from an old industrial state Newcastle are the team as they are like the steelers. Everton are the Mets living in the shadow of more successful team but the people who like them support them more passionately for that reason. Southampton are the Green Bay Packers, a team that punches above their weight. West Ham are coolest choice and why they are popular with American soccer hipsters. They are a team based in the equivalent of Rucker Park. East London is the poorest part of London so very working class area. They are famed for having the toughest fans in England because they are popular in Essex too, which is the English equivalent of New Jersey so have many gangsters as fans too. But despite this gritty environment the team is famous for producing the most flamboyant English players and teams that play pretty football. Plus Obama is a fan of them too.

Everton = Packers, Liverpool = Bears, Chelsea = Giants, West Ham = Jets, Man City = Patriots, Spurs = Eagles,

The Packers don't punch above their weight. The Packers are one of the most prestigious teams in football, and I'm no Packer fan. . Newcastle and Steelers is spot on. 1. Man U = Patriots (popularity within the country, numerous championships) 2. Chelsea= Cowboys( you either love them or hate them, Cowboys are richest team in the NFL, and generally snobby fans) 3, Man City= Colts( heavy passing game, both struck gold, City with Ownership money, Colts with two franchise superstar QBs, both rivals with Man U and Patriots) 4. Liverpool = 49ers( great history, still good but no where near where they used to be) 5. Everton=Raiders gritty teams with neighbors that generally have more history Liverpool to Everton; 49ers to Raiders) I could keep going but those were the easiest to compare.

I forgot to add Chelsea are the team of rich. London has more billionaires than any city in the world and most live near Chelsea. Imagine if there was a sports team based in Manhattan or the Hamptons that would be Chelsea. That is why there is a big rivalry between Chelsea and West Ham. Chelsea are the team of the wealthy west London and West Ham are e team of e working poor East London.

London Premier League teams are Crystal Palace, West Ham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Queens Park Rangers, and Tottenham Hotspur. Crystal Palace and QPR are suburban. Chelsea is in the Beverly Hills of London, roughly. West Ham and Tottenham are East End blue collar sides. The latter was/is the team of immigrants, most famously Jewish migrants. Arsenal is Arsenal.
@Delboy09 жыл бұрын
Robert Little I agree with all you said. I agree Arsenal is unique as it is the most popular London and transcends all groups. It is based in Islington a very upmarket upper middle class area in London, but is very close to Hackney a more blue collar, working class area that has a big immigrant population so Arsenal transcend class, race and location.
