The Welsh Guards, are a regiment of the British Army, part of the Guards Division or Household Division.
This is their slow march, known as "Men of Harlech"; performed rather quickly for some reason.

It should be QUICK march instead of slow march I think By the way, 3 days ago was the 140th anniversary of the famous Battle of Rorke's Drift in South Africa (22nd January 1879). This battle was between a small group of 150 British (Welsh I believe) soldiers and 3,000 - 4,000 Zulus. This battle was immortalised in the movie "Zulu" from 1964 with f.i. a young Michael Caine as one of the main actors. The British (Welsh?) won the battle against all odds. At the beginning of the battle the Zulus started singing (intimidating the enemy and at the same time boosting courage among the own troops). The British (Welsh?) replied by singing… MEN OF HARLECH! Best regards and have a good day from Flanders (Flemish or Dutch-speaking part of Belgium), hence the war poem" In Flanders' Fields".
@Gynra
@Gynra 4 жыл бұрын
The soldiers at Rorke's drift were mostly from the 24th Regiment of Foot, later to become the South Wales Borderers. It was made up mainly of men from both side of the border, and so included a fair number of Englishmen (and 16 Irish and 1 Scot). In fact, Englishmen outnumbered the Welsh on that day. I say this only in the interests of accuracy, not any sort of nationalism. I am Welsh and was brought up in the South Wales Borderers recruitment area. The SWB were later incorporated into the Royal Regiment of Wales.

I have a song book with this as the first song on the book. It was given to my girlfriend's sister on th 4th August 1936 ( they have both past away). The words are in both English and Welsh and it is not sung or played in slow time. I would say it is played on normal 80 steps per minute time, being neither a quick march or a slow march. I have checked the Regiments details and this is their slow march with Rising of the Lark as their quick march! I have just sung it to myself and it sounds right singing it at a slow pace.

The Queens Colour Squadron are absolutely brilliant, none better, when it comes to marching around, stamping your feet in spit shined boots, and shouting there is no one to equal them, and if that's the way you want to spend 22 years good for you, but as for airfield defence, in three combat tours, carrying a loaded rifle I never saw a Rockape anywhere other than the NAFFI bar. !

I've had to play this before and the sheet music is actually a slightly different rhythm with double dots rather than just single.dots but on the march it tends to be played only with single dots to make the rhythm easier to march to I suppose.

Racism aside...as most actual Welshmen feel..., this is not " slow " . Most people couldn't march this quickly . The truth is that the men of Gwent ( and Harlech ) could march "thrice a bellyful " . Back in the day , most enlisted men could " march " on an empty stomach for a week ( the best of them ) .The Welsh could march ( and fight ) three times more, better , longer ....whatever ...I like " thrice a bellyful " . The English would ask " fight or sing " ? Both . Both .

You misunderstand me, my point was about the musical arrangement. Men of Harlech is the quick march to the Royal Welsh, (not this arrangement) and the Slow March to the Welsh Guards (again... not this particular arrangement). As you say your quick march is The Rising of the Lark.

Men of Harlech! In the Hollow, Do ye hear like rushing billow Wave on wave that surging follow Battle's distant sound? Tis the tramp of Saxon foemen, Saxon spearmen, Saxon bowmen, Be they knights or hinds or yeomen, They shall bite the ground! Loose the folds asunder, Flag we conquer under! The placid sky now bright on high, Shall launch its bolts in thunder! Onward! 'tis the country needs us, He is bravest, he who leads us Honor's self now proudly heads us, Freedom, God and Right! Rocky Steeps and passes narrow, Flash with spear and flight of arrow Who would think of death or sorrow? Death is glory now! Hurl the reeling horsemen over, Let the earth dead foemen cover Fate of friend, of wife, of lover, Trembles on a blow! Strands of life are riven! Blow for blow is given In deadly lock, or battle shock, And mercy shrieks to heaven! Men of Harlech! young or hoary, Would you win a name in story? Stike for home, for life, for glory! Freedom, God and Right!
