This is the oldest European Championship record still on the books 44 years later, just a few days older than the men's 800 record which also still remains.

Martin Vainio was undoubtedly on the magic sauce in 1978 just as when he was caught on it at LA 1984 - Vainio was one of the many destroyers of athletics

Brendan Foster put everything into this race. It's tragic he didn't medal, especially when you look at Marty Vainio effortlessly overtaking Foster on the last bend like he's out for a Sunday morning jog.

Yeah not really fair on Big Bren. Gin Anabolic fizz for Marti and a pint of Newkie Bown for Bren

For the comparison last year the 10000 m Finnish championship was won with time 29:52. The word has gone 30-60 seconds faster and Finns are 2.5 minutes slower. The 1978 win was last running victory for Finns on track on a major event.

I guess this is still one of the fastest 10000 meter races of the European Championships. It is very sad, that Foster did not win a medal and was not rewarded for his courage. Probabely he started his sprint for home to soon. By the way the champion of 74 was laped.

The national records of Finland, Lithuania, Romania, Estonia and Poland still stand from this race nearly 43 years later! I think it held the record for most runners under 28 minutes in any one race until sometime in the 1990s.
