The greatest explorer of all time, Sir Ernest Shackleton led his 27 men into a frozen danger zone, and incredibly brought them all back alive. Now, a crew of six men, led by explorer Tim Jarvis, attempts to follow in Shackleton’s wake. Using exactly the same equipment and clothing used a century before, Tim and his crew take themselves beyond the point of no return.

Shackleton's survival story is indeed one for the ages, but the men in the book "Island of the Lost" are legend. Set in about 1865, they were shipwrecked in the Antarctic Sea and not only had to survive but then built a boat on the wind swept Auckland Islands and even built a FORGE to manufacture the iron parts needed to assemble the boat. It took a year and a half because there were almost no resources. The sea journey to safety was a miracle not unlike Shackleton. Both are epic tales of survival that will haunt you for the rest of your life.

Call me stupid but it has always amazed me how those little boats even stay afloat like that. I mean honestly, im watching the waves and they disappear and reappear and its amazing how they stay afloat.. Ive only seen the ocean a handful of times in my 40yrs ,so im not familiar with it and im not sure if ive ever been on a boat in my life .. I will have to do that b4 i die(not in these conditions, ofcourse, lol) But i just find it crazy how the storm seems to swallow the boat up and spit it out.

I live on a boat... a 37 footer. And I can honestly tell you that just being in 5-6 foot seas out in the Delaware Bay is absolutely TERRIFYING! Especially if the engines die! Without power, the boat immediately rotates into the worst position possible where the waves are hitting it broadside. OMG! I cannot even begin to fanthom just how scary those big giant waves in the video felt to those men in that teeny little, creaky, rickety 22 foot wooden boat!!! Ooooh!!! I seriously had to pop a Dramamine just watching them!!! It IS scary and I don’t even know the half of it! We plan on taking our boat out on the ocean this spring/summer, but only on the absolute calmest of days! Not to mention, we have TWO engines, my husband is a marine mechanic, we have GPS, radar, and navigation equipment, a radio AND tow insurance. All that and I’m STILL kinda scared!!! 😱

After reading some of the comments I came back here to say that every one of Sir Ernest's men played his part in the Shackleton expedition. No one ever said any different. Sir Ernest took the credit he was due..period. The Endurance belonged to him. All stock and gear belonged to him.The funding he collected belonged to him. His fearlessness his wit and strong determination that made him the Leader of his pack. Sir Ernest Shackleton deserved the credit earned the credit and his brave and determined men deserves sharing in that credit but it was Sir Ernest Shackleton Expedition. He hired Worsly and the other good men to work for him. Don't forget that.

Shackleton was an absolute badass with balls of steel. An incredible leader that took the responsibility of his crew very seriously. I've read the book "Endurance" a few times now, and what he did was nothing short of amazing and on the edge of insanity, but he didn't have a choice.
@DinoCism
@DinoCism 4 жыл бұрын
Lol if he took the "responsibility of his crew" seriously wouldn't he have turned back when the whalers who knew the area told him we wouldn't be able to get in to the continent at that time of year and would just get stuck in the ice which he did? The whole thing was totally preventable and only happened cause he thought he knew better than professionals and wanted to get his way. Actually this expedition failed in like all of its goals lol. I feel like Amundsen's trip to the pole, where nothing went wrong and they learned from people who knew how to survive in the arctic much better fots your description of good leadership. That said, it's a pretty fun and wacky story about all the trouble they got themselves into so I still enjoy the shackleton story but he is honestly just like the modern ditsy blonde who wanders into the Grand Canyon that they have in other episodes of this show.

Woulda been cool if they could name the boat that Shackleton sailed. It was The James Caird... And they would have to live on the ice for a year and drag their boat across dozens of miles of ice, and then sail it another few hundred miles to elephant island, before even embarking on this journey, to even come close to recreating the final leg of the enormous journey that those men endured. Ha.! I didn’t intend it, but I just used the word of Shackletons ship named Endurance. 😔 Fantastic story. But, I guess what I’m really trying to say is that, in order for these men to re-create this absolutely amazing journey, they would have to have really lived the previous year and a half stranded and struggling in the Antarctic. because that is what gave the men who actually completed this journey the strength to do so. They did not just hop in a plane and go get on a boat and sail from elephant island to south Georgia island. They spent like two years stranded in the Antarctic beforehand. So those men were acclimated to the hardships and the sacrifices. Therefore they were stronger and more able to withstand the discomfort’s and even the food. They were at a point where they cherished every calorie every drop of nourishment was sacrosanct. They were strong men. However, I do totally do not mean any disrespect to these men for their attempts at this recreation and ttheir respect their respectful recognition of Shackleton‘s undeniably incomprehensible journey.

Boats today are more lulxurious than they were during Shackleton's days. No built-in heaters, toilets that flush, sinks with water, cook stoves that run propane or electricity, water makers. I would say they had a huge advantage. But still, making the trip itself was an amazing trip so I'll give them that credit.

Wasn't captain William Bligh's journey with a handful of men more miraculous? They were set adrift in the south pacific in a lifeboat by the HMS Bounty's mutineers with a chart and a sexton. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but he navigated something like 1800 nautical miles to Australia with almost no provisions. Of course the conditions in that part of the Pacific weren't quite as extreme.
@PetrieRobert
@PetrieRobert 4 жыл бұрын
No mention of the navigator, Frank Worsley? Did they navigate by dead reckoning, taking a reading once a day (if that), as Worsley had to? Was the boat loaded with rocks for ballast, that they slept among? Did they have the non-sailor McNish, who was taken on to prevent him causing discord on the Island? Were the men compromised by months of hardship and the horrible voyage to Elephant island? Did they embark on April 24? Were they in danger of frostbite? Were they facing death, plus the deaths of 21 other men should they fail? (Probably not, as they had a support ship with them.) Here we see fit modern men sailing a replica while dressed up in the old burberrys and eating hoosh. This play acting degrades the remarkable truth of the boat journey to South Georgia.

They are just attempting to do it but if something goes wrong (and it’s very VERY likely that it might), I personally, and as a viewer myself, would not want these men to die!!! So... SO WHAT??? There absolutely SHOULD BE!!!

If you want to never reach your goal and die: Go with Scott. If you want to never reach your goal and survive: Go with Shackleton. If you want to reach your goal pretty comfy and come back: Go with Amundsen.

They were all miraculously spared. I'm not buying into all this Shackelton hero worship hype. Far greater explorers than this are easy to find. Lewis & Clark for example. Very interesting story here, none the less.

You are not buying into Shackleton and his hero worship hype ? But you believe in miracle's and obviously have a fictional friend/dictator in the sky you worship ? All they explored discovered and lived through and for you just miraculous !!! Poor excuse

Listening to the beginning is kind of a joke Shackleton crashed the ship in the first place then his 1st mate if I believe was the one who navigated in the small boat and was the hero of the whole situation.
