One year my parents received a gag gift from close family friends. (it was sometime during the early to mid 80's) It was a fruit cake. That started a 'war' of gifting the same cake in every creative way that could be thought of that lasted for years. Fast forward to last year when my Mom passed and we were cleaning out the house. In the very back of the closet, buried under piles of old sweaters was a box. Opened it up to find the same damn cake tin (with the cake still inside). It still looked the same!!! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Cheers to a new year!

@@Lindseyisloony I live in germany and I have to say, it's not every time the case, that the fresh made Stollen is better than the store bought one. I like the one from Aldi more than the fresh home made one from my mom. And also it is recommended to wrap up the fresh made Stollen in foil and let it rest for at least a week, so the flavors and also the moisture can distribute evenly.

Christmas cake is a tradition you make the actual rich fruit cake in October. Then you let it mature by keeping it moist with brandy. Then in mid November you put on the almond paste leave it to dry then top it with royal icing all home made not out of packets. In Ireland we have it on Christmas night served with tea whiskey or brandy. In Yorkshire they eat it with mature Wensleydale cheese.

My wife makes her family's traditional fruitcake every year -- and every year, she has to make MORE because everyone who gets a piece wants her to give them a mini-loaf ... and everyone who gets a mini-loaf wants a bigger one. I agree that store-bought fruitcakes are horrible ... but a well-made home-made fruitcake can be a yummy thing! They do take a long time to make -- and the cost of the ingredients adds up to a BIG investment.

My great gran and gran always made fruit cakes. And early too. Like in late August early September. Very expensive and they once a week, would pull them out and soak in sugar syrup and brandy. That is good fruit cake. I haven been brave enough to try making one.

@terramarini68803 жыл бұрын
Way back in the day it was the most delicious thing on the table, ingredients for anything beyond a basic pottage were extremely dear so sweets had to be got with dried fruits (most readily available) soaking it in brandy made it more palatable. nowadays we can and do make better. Fruit cake was so highly regarded in the past that it retains it's place at our tables out of custom. edited for spelling

Maybe it’s because I’m in the uk but I can’t imagine Christmas without fruitcake... our traditional ‘Christmas Cake’ is a very rich fruit cake made as early as October and then pricked once a week and drizzled with alcohol, usually brandy but depends on personal taste. Then just before Christmas we cover it with marzipan and then icing... and make sure the kids don’t get hold of it as it’s pretty alcoholic by now! My favourite year-round fruit cake recipe though is one that my grandma taught me. The fruit is soaked overnight in tea and so the cake is really moist and really yummy! Maybe I could make some and send it to you to try..? I might be able to change your minds about fruit cake?!

The reason why people are buying up all the fruitcake and whipped cream is because of an old, boozy Christmas trifle recipe. Basically, it was repeating layers of slices of fruitcake drenched in kiersh wine, gin or Reisling, and generous layers of whipped cream. They were served in deep, clear dishes to showcase the lasagna like layers. Nostalgia for me, as that was how I got drunk as an 8 year old kid during the holidays. My dad never remade it after I'd eaten almost half of the dish, then left puddles of it all the way to the bathroom. Happy Holidays!

Hey Austin and Cameron. I normally don't like fruitcake either, but here in Texas where I live, in my hometown we have a world famous bakery called Collin Street Bakery that is know all over the world for its fruitcake. You can get original, apricot, pineapple, Texas pecan and blondie flavored fruitcakes. You can even order a set of mini fruitcakes where you get 4 different flavors in mini size. They all come in tins that are collectible. You also can choose what size fruitcake you want, 2 pounds, 3 pounds or 5 pounds. They sell them every year around Christmas and ship all over the world.

Store bought and even most homemade fruit cake sucks monkey butts. However, if you get a correctly made fruitcake it would totally change your views on fruitcake. My Mama made the best ever fruitcake that everyone loved. People would start asking Mama in early November if she would make them a fruitcake for Christmas. Everyone offered to pay, but she never accepted payment....she would only make it for people she loved and it would be a gift. 😁😍 I'm not sure what recipe you saw, but fruitcake should not take 26 hours to make. From start to finish Mama's fruitcake would take 4-5 hours.......and the mixture would make 4-8 fruitcakes, depending on the size of the pans you used. Wishing you the joy of one day finding the perfect fruitcake. 😂
