Roger Sayer plays W.T. Best’s arrangement of the Overture to ‘St Paul’ by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47).
Mendelssohn’s oratorio is based on the life and conversion of St Paul and, while it was popular in its day, it is less well known now. However, choruses such as ‘Sleepers wake’ and ‘How lovely are the messengers’, and the arioso ‘I will sing of thy great mercies’ are still well known and much loved.
The overture’s theme is based on the chorale ‘Wachet Auf’ and begins slowly, before encompassing complex fugal sections and finally building to a powerful last statement of the theme.
