Leipzig’s St. Thomas Boys Choir performs “Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen über dir,“ composed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. This motet for eight-part choir was performed in 2009 as part of a concert at Leipzig’s St. Nicolai Church by the Gewandhausorchester, conducted by Kurt Masur, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Germany's “Peaceful Revolution.” The St. Thomas Boys Choir is here conducted by its musical director at the time, Georg Christoph Biller.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy wrote “Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen über dir” for the Berlin Cathedral, setting to music verses 11 and 12 of Psalm 91 from the Bible:
“For He shall give His angels charge over thee,
to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands,
lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.”
