Mendelssohn kind of made his own moonlight sonata with this one. A first movement with a funeral first theme, a scherzo in major in a more joyful classical style, and a very stormy and agitated ending.

And thank you for producing and uploading this lovely clip with an excellent recording along with the score. Mendelssohn CAN be so much more than charming and pleasing, in fact, FASCINATING!

This shares an opus number with Scriabin's Fantasie. Mendelssohn is rather more sunny and reserved, while scriabin's is dark and heavy. Id have to say Scriabin's seems more fantastic

28 is a great opus number. Here are some others with it, all for piano solo: Beethoven Op. 28 Sonata in D major "Pastorale," Chopin 24 Preludes Op. 28 , Schumann Drei Romanzen op 28, Rachmaninoff Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor Op. 28, Prokofiev Sonata No. 3 Op. 28. In addition to Mendelssohn Fantasy and Scriabin Fantasie, as you mentioned. Ain't that something?

@@nadiaboulanger9323 When it comes to Opus Numbers, Op.1 usually is one of the greatest (This opus usually shows the genius of all composers that we know now), Op.53 is also great (Beethoven's Waldstein, Chopin's Heroic, Scriabin's 5th)

The first movement has one of the most heartbreaking endings in all music. The coda in the major is "cancelled" by a single a natural in the return of the main theme at the end.

The start of it really evokes the Presto Agitato of the Moonlight Sonata.

@@caterscarrots3407 ehh. The beginning honestly sounds more like a baroque fantasia. And then it’s Beethoven slow movements.

This is how Alkan could write, in which pity and condescension towards the performer suddenly woke up. Irresistible texture similarity. I wonder if they knew each other?
@allahuakbee846 Жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Alkan prefered a cozy lifestyle avoiding the contact with most other virtuoso musicians. Ok, he had a little circle of artistic friends like Saint-Saens and Victor Hugo, but that's it. But it's very likely that Alkan knew Mendelssohn's music, though Mendelssohn was probably the most renowned (and later hated) musicians of the time. He also wrote a piece, the Barcarolle in G minor Op. 65 No. 6, which seems as a kind of a hommage to Mendelssohn's Songs without words (the Venetian Boat/Gondola Songs and the Album Leaf)

Pero los movimientos no tienen la estructura tematica de una sonata y son mas romantisados... bueno es fue Coquetería de mendelsshon pero siempre se defiende jajajja
