I had learned about how Mendelssohn had wanted these beautiful manuscripts to be destroyed after his death but, thankfully...someone had the Grace to do otherwise, and, now doubt...how profoundly grateful we are for that...THANK YOU!!!....

I know the Nazis destroyed a lot of his works, but I never knew that he himself wanted them destroyed.
@ThreadBomb5 жыл бұрын
@@snakey934Snakeybakey I don't think the Nazis destroyed Mendelssohn's works. "When Hitler came to power, the Nazis restricted access to the Mendelssohn materials but did not destroy them. During the bombing of Berlin, manuscripts, paintings and other works by Jewish artists were moved to the countryside for safekeeping. For a long time it was thought that the batch containing the library's Mendelssohn holdings, which had supposedly been sent to a monastery in Silesia, had in fact been lost or destroyed by the advancing Soviet troops. / But a few years ago it was discovered that the Mendelssohn archives had actually been deposited in the Biblioteka Jagiellskonska in Cracow." www.nytimes.com/1986/06/29/arts/music-notes-new-mendelssohn-works-are-found.html

He wrote all 12 of these string symphonies between the ages 12 and 14. His interest in Bach was very keen even then, as it was throughout his life, and the influence is strong, so one might regard these more as studies than showpieces.

Definitely a baroque influence, which he got from his teacher. When he got older he started to listen to Beethoven (and also Spohr, but we don't talk about that!).

@Simon Lomberg Actually, we know that he led these string symphonies from the keyboard. There are recordings of these works with keyboard by the L'Orfeo Barockorchester led by Michi Gaigg. (Goodman also used keyboard but you can't hear it.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYGTonSPjp13b9U

Just curious: did the Northern Chamber Orchestra give permission for its recording to be here? I'm assuming that the poster of this video, and Google, are profiting from the ads that play before the video, but what about the musicians?
@scrymgeour346 жыл бұрын
Clearly you've never tried sharing music on KZbin. None of these videos are monetized. As for the ads (which are there because companies fraudulently claim copyright ownership of the music and YT usually declines to contest those claims) I fight and lose 9 out of 10 DMCA claims made on each one of them. If KZbin wasn't like this, I wouldn't have stopped uploading videos five years ago.
@scrymgeour346 жыл бұрын
Actually, it looks like Nicholas Ward and his orchestra (through a third party share working for Naxos Records) are being compensated through these ads. Click the 'Show More' tab on this video. Not sure yet about the other string symphonies I posted.
