She has no fear. There is none. She is backed by this whole orchestra and still can shine through during a fortissimo... you would have to really mean each note you play to do that, and therefore know every note and what it means and not be afraid to let each one shine and sing. Thank you Chloe for showing humanity the beauty of music, expression, and commitment.

Maybe you remember Christian Li from Menuhin. He won the shared 1st price together with Chloe. I visited his youtube channel yesterday and it was very interesting. I think both young artists made great progress since Menuhin and both are very good but totally different way. And even people visiting their channels are totally different :). It was a clever decision to split the 1st price. You just can't compare Chloe's interpretation with Li's one. For me Chloe is very sincere, very natural, her music has thousands of layers, with tiny polished details and deep respect to composer's will and to the music itself. What surprises me again and again is her instinct and sensitivity. She is able to find hidden secrets and beauty where many great artists with big names failed. Li on the other hand plays on edge from the start till the end. He has more or less just one layer, but superpolished, supershiny, no much details, no much respect but very straightforward. Li's style is able to "sell" music even to people who don't know much about it which is the bigger part of his fanpage comunity. :D It is a bit like Chopin versus Liszt. As I said it was very interesting experience.

You've summed it up well. Its a little like comparing David Oistrakh and Jascha Heifeitz. One captivates while you listens with your ears, the other enthralls you while you watch the onstage performance.

If you are fond of finding hidden treasuries in the music (except of Chloe Chua of course) I can recommend you those 2 names: Mstislav Rostropovich - violoncello Ivo Pogorelich - piano Anyway this breed of artists is very rare and among 12 years old players it is quite unique. Respect.

@@rafanifischer3152 muscle memory. The amount of practice required to actually play at this level means that by the time you’re ready to perform, you don’t need sheet music. Also, the music is way too difficult to read from the score anyway - if you want to play at an exceptional level then you can’t distract yourself by focusing on which notes you need to play and when.

Though I share the same family name as Chloe, I am not related to her, other than we live in the same city-state, Singapore, near the equator. Ever since Chloe was awarded with Christian Li as the co-winners of the 2018 Menuhin Competition (Junior Section), I have been following each and every upload of their video clips. Knowing and witnessing their progress, my heart is filled with excitement, gratitude, and earnest anticipation: that they will continue to bless this world with their musical giftedness. Reading the occasional reports from local newspapers in Singapore, I have been informed of the commitment of Chloe's teacher, Yin Ke, and her unfailingly supportive parents. In one interview, Chloe once so wisely stated that giftedness alone is insufficient, and her incremental progress is made, as a result of diligence and commitment. "It takes a whole village", this adage is so true. Viewing and commenting on Chloe and Christian Li's performances, I have made new friends. I take this liberty to attach below a few paragraphs from an email I received this morning (sent from New York, a fellow fan of Chloe and Christian Li). This fan (lilianwriter), and many other fans of Chloe and Christian Li, attest to the fact that, indeed, it takes a whole global village, to root for these immeasurably gifted and committed young musicians. It is so heartwarming to witness that Chloe and Christian Li have so many earnest supporters in different continents. As fans, we all collectively stand beside and behind you both, Chloe and Christian, not just for this and next year, but for many future decades to come. Please continue to bless us with the gift of your music making. Quotes below are taken from lilianwriter's email: "Wow, triple wow, Lee-Beng. I've seen this one already, but I watched it again anyway, and once again agree that those Menuhin judges absolutely know what they are doing. Their choice of Chloe and Christian for a joint first prize was just right. These two young performing artists have blossomed and flourished since the competition last year. In this performance, Chloe is completely professional: calm, confident, eloquent, emotional, exciting, exhilarating. She left the orchestra in the dust during the third movement, but the conductor should have prepared her young musicians for the speed challenge they were facing. The end of the third movement is marked allegro molto vivace, and that is what Chloe did. She tried to convey her tempo to the conductor, but, well... Chloe did not act the least bit critical or irritated. She's a true professional, and a very nice person as well. I find her playing very feminine, and at the same time, strong, determined, and virtuosic. Brava Chloe, who has become a great violinist."
@luborkloda89035 жыл бұрын
Well, the orchestra was still FAR better then the one in Switzerland on Menuhin Finals :D :D :D As for the tempos- it is part of Chloe's "instinct" or "feeling" or how to call it :D Something you can't learn. Something what is part of you, of your experience, inspiration, taste for music .. and maybe a message from heaven. I don't know. You have it or you don't have it. Many professionals or music critics don't have this gift and only handful of true music lovers can recognize it. It is a miracle of music :p

In the 16 months since this wonderful performance Chloe has learnt and performed in concert two more violin concertos by Mozart (1 and 2), Massenet's Meditation, and Piazzolla's Otoño Porteño. She has also learnt Wieniawski's second violin concerto, although sadly, because of a travel ban as a result of covid, her scheduled performance of it in Macau on 9 January has just been cancelled. Moreover in the next 4 months, either side of performing Bach's Concerto for two violins (with Ye Lin) in Singapore, she will perform two further works for the first time, Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending" in Geneva and Chausson's Poeme in Richmond US as part of the opening gala concert at the 2021 Menuhin Competition. We mere mortals can only marvel and be grateful for the fruits of her labours! What a stupendously talented and extraordinarily hard-working young person!

@jackburgess85793 жыл бұрын
@@susannestechow1009 Yes, I am sure Chloe will soon have an opportunity to perform the Wieniawski, and this indeed is a very exciting prospect. But there is even better news! Just a week ago on 2 April she was able to perform Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending" in Singapore with the ReSound Collective; and this performance, which received a glowing review in the Straits Times, will be posted on the Resound Collective's channel in a matter of weeks. (Their channel doesn't get the attention it should, even though there is a video on it of Chloe giving a very different and excellent performance of "Winter" with them. Sadly, and remarkably, the performance has only had 880 views!) Furthermore, although Chloe's trip to Richmond for the Menuhin opening concert has had to be cancelled, instead of it she will give a virtual recital on 18 May that will be streamed here on the Menuhin Competition's channel. The program includes three completely new and wonderful works, including Chausson's Poeme and Ysaye's sonate #3 for solo violin, so do look out for it! (I have given more information in a comment under Chloe's sublime and genuinely world class performance of Mozart's violin concerto #2, which as you probably know was finally posted on the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's website a couple of days ago.)

A superb performance, by any standard. My word, there is an amazing amount of young classical musical talent coming through today. It is in good hands for the future, that’s for sure.

Chloe, I am so glad you honor our Heavenly Father with your playing. His brilliance and beauty shines from you and your performance, giving you a wondrous Divine edge! Your musicality is superb, that shines with the Holy Spirit's inspiration and interpretation. May God continue to bless you supremely, always. I cannot hear enough of your playing!
@jackburgess2749 ай бұрын
Chloe's technique has improved to the point of being razor-sharp - witness e.g. her performance earlier this year of Bruch's first violin concerto - but even here it is excellent, and more to the point, her musicality is absolutely stellar. In particular, she performs the Andante with a profundity and love that in the whole history of the recorded era, few can match.

@jackburgess2746 ай бұрын
@@victorhugocampos2823 That is a very fine proof of the proposition that you have no understanding of classical music. Congratulations!

@jackburgess2746 ай бұрын
@@victorhugocampos2823 It is not to your credit that you should think that the preferences of you or anyone else are of any relevance or interest. Those who would rather listen to Karolina's Mendelssohn than to Chloe's have no interest in and/or no understanding of classical music. The fact that the capacity to understand and appreciate classical music is a relatively rare and elite skill is hardly news.
@victorhugocampos28235 ай бұрын

I really enjoy listening to your performance. Your violin can bellow with so much gusto. I like how you arch your bow with each stroke. It gives that rich fullness to your music that I thoroughly enjoy. And to top it off...you got all the notes memorized in your bloodstreams. I’m impressed☺️
