Great artists, perhaps more than regular folk, are defined by their peccadillos. Stern is regarded as one of the great violinists of the 20th century. On balance, he was beloved by many and he accomplished things beyond his work with the fiddle. I am reminded by the last line delivered in Billy Wilder's great commedy "Some Like It Hot" by the comedian Joe E. Brown: "Nobody's perfect."

Stern was very uncomfortable because the violin was off of the shoulder pad. He had to frequently push the violin inward.

Слушаю, смотрю и листаю комменты...сейчас с женой слушали аудио-запись Генрика Шеринга с лондонским оркестром 1964 года...там дирижер Дорати - вот где чудо !!! Какой дивный тон у этого скрипача и звук просто фантастический !!! Говорят, не надо сравнивать музыкантов - особенно, современников...вот это исполнение Мендельсона банальное и, конечно, совершенно негодное - надо вовремя уходить со сцены... наверное, оно верно. Айзека Стерна привелось видеть дважды - в июле 1982 года в Москве и позднее уже в Петербурге на его последних гастролях в России - тогда в Большом зале филармонии был сонатный вечер и он на бис играл сонату то ли Брамса, то ли Франка. Сама программа была скуШная - ничего не помню...зрелище было печальное - лучше б не играл. Стерн был похож на престарелого штангиста с короткими ручками, очень уставшим и нездоровым...зачем он приезжал в Россию? - наверное, навсегда проститься... КонеШно, до высот Давида Ойстраха и Леонида Когана ему было далеко даже в молодые годы...это очевидно. Мне на память осталось его черно-белое фото с молодым Третьяковым. Сам снимал. СПб, рабочий, 60 лет.

Legendary Stern... I remember his live concert in Montreal in the 90.. what a phrase in Brahms concerto , so humanly deep... but technically not so precise.... who cares anyway ... I think in this performance he was still struggling from a jet lag ....I tell , jet lag makes your hands go in different directions all the time ..of course I am talking about the highest standards... This is not a performance for CD :) but always so enjoyable to watch and listen to Him play :) thank you

Isaac Stern is to the violin as Rubinstein is to the piano. They infuse their music with EMOTION! Technique can be taught and learned but emotion, the most important characteristic in great playing, cannot. He was my favorite whom I was fortunate enough to see perform several time, always memorably.

I heard him play the Berg in 1959 and it was a revelation. No subsequent performance has been quite so stunning as that. However I also travelled 250 miles to hear him play the prokofiev sonata for two violins with Zukermann. He marched on to the platform and annouced that he had been in Israel and they had not had enough time to rehearse the piece. I never really forgave him for that particularly since he replace it with a scratchy performance of the Bach chaconne.

How insulting-this is the man who led the charge to save Carnegie Hall, is considered one of the great violinists of the 20th Century and who for 50 years supported the Israel Philharmonic. His is an incredible legacy that will be remembered for many generations.

Harold Luks Stern was one of my favorite violinists growing up, great performance recordings of the Brahms, Mozart 5, etc, and there is no disputing his contributions. However, you ought to take a look at what I’m referring to. I never would have suspected a man who in so many ways was great of the petty and vicious ways he behaved when it suited him. Staggering jack ass is appropriate. His great deeds are suspiciously dripping with the ego which compelled him to derail competing careers, and the funnier Stern moments can be told in memoirs of violinists who encountered him (not to mention those of his children). The funniest story I’ve seen is of a violinist in Arizona who sits in for the concertmaster of the orchestra in a rehearsal of the Beethoven. The concertmaster moves to the second section leaving the sit in violinist to play concertmaster. He asks why, because that never happens, and the concertmaster says something along the lines of “I’m not dealing with this jerk again”. If you can find the story you might get a laugh out of it. He had a dark side, to say the least.

For what it’s worth I am pretty sure that I only looked into these matters because of my incredulity at similar posts, some years ago. I was surprised, amused at some, and disappointed. But there’s always the story of Bronislaw Huberman who gave the better part of his concertizing career to create the Palestinian (now Israeli) Philharmonic to save musicians from near certain doom in Nazi occupied Europe. An element of self-denial in performing a great deed is what makes the deed shine so brightly; rather, Stern accomplished some great things which he also knew would memorialize him. For those same reasons he felt he was entitled to premier any concerto at Carnegie Hall, and to run over any performers who threatened his various entitlements as the great Isaac Stern. Even as a violinist he cannot escape the criticism that his playing suffered in service to his great ego which would not prostrate before the instrument through rigorous practice. I am just not a fan of the person, and as a violinist I also know that his playing suffered because of the same ego, as wonderfully as he was able to play, in spite of it. Anyway. Not trying to ruffle feathers. Any friend of Jack Benny gets some bonus points for that fact alone.

I am trying to listen in an unbiased way.This sounds plain awful to my ears,thin,annoying,with character but without heart.Phrasing is refreshingly intelligent,but what good is it when soul is missing.All the same Stern was known to have frequently been "selectively generous."This is not playing that I would choose to listen to under any circumstances.I did now,out of curiosity.

I think most of that is due to the terrible sound quality in the recording. Probably done with a cheap mic. There is no way Stern's violin actually sounds that bad.

I agree. There is a sweetness to his tone but it's thin. I don't think its the violin, which is probably the "Ysaye" Guarneri de Gesu. I was trying to catch a good view of the back plate, which would give it away, but can't see for sure. Anyway, the Guarneris from the Golden Era have a very big, round tone and tend to be stained a darker red-brown than the Strads. Some violinists can make any violin sound big and round in tone. Example - Oistrakh. Some have a thinner but very sweet tone. Example - Heifetz, and of course Stern. I think Stern makes his DG sound more like a Strad, but I think his tone is inconsistent. Watch his bow - too much curvature. He has a short arm, and with age he may not be able to extend his wrist sufficiently, but I think his bow control is a problem. Watch the Heifetz bow for comparison; there IS NO comparison. IMO, Stern was overrated and overpaid, and that's all I have to say about that!
