Menopause is a natural biological process marking the end of a woman's reproductive years, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. It is characterized by the cessation of menstruation due to the decline in ovarian function and the associated decrease in estrogen and progesterone levels.
Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and increased risk of osteoporosis. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) involves supplementing these hormones to alleviate menopausal symptoms and prevent long-term complications like osteoporosis.
HRT can be administered in various forms, including pills, patches, gels, or vaginal creams. While HRT is effective in reducing menopausal symptoms and protecting bone health, it is not without risks.
Studies have shown that HRT may increase the risk of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke in some women. Therefore, the decision to initiate HRT should be individualized, considering the patient’s health history, risk factors, and symptom severity. Close monitoring and regular follow-up are essential for women on HRT to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks.
