2 1/2 years ago my periods started going wonky. About 1 1/2 years ago my night sweat & hot flashes began. Thus began my foray into peri-menopause. I've been watching alot of your videos and got pretty excited watching this one in particular...until you mentioned not taking BC pills at age 55 ( I just turned 55 a few weeks ago). Would you mind explaining why 55 is the cutoff for BC pills?? I'd really like to know and maybe other women would too. I'd also like to thank you for all of your tutorials. They're so helpful and informative!

I'd love the answer to that as well. Why use lower dose HRT when we can use more of the hormones our bodies apparently love?
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 3 жыл бұрын
The age of 55 is an arbitrary cut-off that is standard of care. Of course, nothing should be that cut and dry Women age differently. If it were my way, the cut-off age would depend on the individual woman. But, of course, if it were my way, Everything about your menopause management would be individualized ... which is why the name of this education is YOUR menopause YOUR way. The younger you are, the higher the dosage of estrogen your body needs. By the time you're 55, the dosages in HRT should be adequate ... BUT many women still need much higher dosages.

@@MenopauseTaylor Can you explain more about why age 55 is the arbitrary cut-off for birth control pills? I have been on BC pills since age 17 with no breaks (I did not want children). I am turning 55 in about a week. My gyno had me stop taking the pills so I could have my hormone blood levels checked. She said I could stay on BC pills but she said it is risky at this age. She is having me take the blood test on day 3 of my cycle (after being off BC Pills for one month), but 1. I may not ever get my period if I am passed menopause, 2. I may get my period months later. I immediately started getting hot and hot especially at night and sweating, so I want to get either back on BC pills or on HRT as soon as possible, lol! That is why I am watching all of your videos. Anyway, can you give further insight on why 55 is the cut off age. I am happy to try HRT though and if it is "enough" hormones for me I will be fine with that and use another method of birth control if necessary. Side note - both my mother and sister went into menopause in their late 50s. And, no I don't have any of the issues that would cause me to not use BC pills. Thanks!

Most doctors recommend switching from birth control pills to hormone replacement at age 55 because the older you are, the lower dosages of hormones you need to do the trick. Think of it like this: The goal is to do what produces the greatest benefits with the lowest risk. When you're young and need birth control, it takes the higher dosages in birth control to do the trick. In other words, the benefits of those higher dosages outweigh the risks. But when you're older, and don't need birth control, you don't need the higher dosages. In fact, those higher dosages become more risky than beneficial. Age does matter. Birth control isn't bad, but as you age it becomes more risky. I think you'll feel fine on the lower dosage HRT starting next year. Don't worry, I'll be here to help you, too.

Thank you so much , I learned a lot from your video My mom was in menopause at the age of 60 ..... lucky girl !! I just turned 48 and since 6-7 months I started having those symptoms which made clear to me I was in perimenopause (insomnia, moods, dry skin and thin hair, but not yet hotflashes....) My gynecologist put me on Klaira, a tetraphasic birthcontrol pill (in the US I think it is marketed as Natazia ...), and told me that as long as it was well tolerated, I can go on untill I'll be 55... I just finished my second blister and I feel really good. My body probabily loves estrogen !! My gynecologist had to insist a lot to put me in Klaira due to my stupid fears and misconceptions, but thanks to your videos I have learned more about my body. What is your opinion about this estradiol valerate + dienogest pill ? Thank you

@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 13 күн бұрын
You can. However, your insurance will probably not pay for both. Birth control containing both estrogen and progesterone can supply estrogen to alleviate your symptoms of menopause and to prevent the three diseases of estrogen deficiency. The progesterone in that birth control will just be there to balance the estrogen. The IUD will not add anything with regard to your hormones. The Mirena IUD contains progestin only that stays localized to your uterus.

Hello Dr Barbie. I’m 51, in peri menopause. I had 4 continuous nights of hot flashes/ night sweats, then it stopped and no more symptoms. I haven’t had a period going on 2 months already so that confirmed the peri menopause. just went to my ob/gyn for my annual and mentioned my symptoms and asked for birth control. Unfortunately, I was given the scare tactic talk about hrt and birth control at my age, etc. She then proceeded to tell me how she managed her Menopause (no hormones, supplements, etc) which kind of defeated the purpose of “my menopause, my way”, not hers. You were soooo right, omg!!! That being said, I explained that I was on birth control for 12 years, coming off 2 years after having my daughter, 42 years old. I told her I don’t smoke, don’t drink, I go to the gym etc… but she gave me a estrogen patch, no progestin, for three months which is what I didn’t want in the first place. I’m going to find another provider because it’s just pointless with getting what I want. My question is; was I wrong for asking for birth control or should I just wait till I’m in full/post menopause? I did great on birth control when I was on it that’s why I wouldn’t mind taking it until 55. Thank you.

I so wish I'd known all this 20 years ago! Thank you so much for educating us! I will make sure my daughter is more educated than me! I'm at a loss though. I just turned 54. My periods in the last year have been about every 4 months, and very light. When I asked to go on bioidentical HRT so I could sleep at night and quit getting frequent hot flashes, Im now taking estradiol cream, and progesterone pills 12 days out of the month. After 2 full cycles though, I still haven't had a period. I don't want to get uterine cancer, but no period. I'm thinking my estradiol may be too low, because while my hot flashes are way better, I wake up every night drenched. I guess I just want to know if I should be concerned? You recommended a DFW doctor above, and thank you so much! I am going to call tomorrow. Should I be concerned not having period after I stop my 12 day progesterone? Because I stopped last Thursday, not nothing. :(
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't be concerned at this point in time. Two months isn't enough time to cause any harm. If you haven't had a period, it just means that the balance between your estrogen & progesterone isn't quite right. The fact that you're having night sweats suggests that you need more estrogen. And you might need more progesterone, too. Maybe you'd like to take both estrogen & progesterone every day so that you don't have periods at all.

Dr. Taylor, I cannot thank you enough for all of the hard work and effort you put into helping women manage their menopause their way. Your videos are a blessing. I am almost 43 and am beginning to experience symptoms of perimenopause (night sweats, difficulty sleeping, forgetfulness, mood swings). I began researching and found your videos after a conversation with my 67 year old mother whose only advice for me was to NOT take hormones because “they cause breast cancer.” I knew I needed to dig deeper. I had not been using any form of hormonal birth control for the past 9 years since my son was born and my husband had a vasectomy. I have decided that the benefits of birth control outweigh any risks and began taking it today. I want to make sure I am understanding you correctly: my doctor prescribed oral Levonorgestrel-Ethinyl Estradiol 0.15-0.03 and I’m trying to determine if this dosage is enough to reap the benefits of protection for heart/osteoporosis/Alzheimer’s. Thank you immensely for your guidance!

Amy, Yours is a very specific, personal issue. I do not have any videos planned for Hypertension due to birth control pills or pregnancy. However, I do one-on-one consultations, and would be very helpful in tailoring all the issue to your personal situation for that. You will also need to learn the differences between the management options that will work for PERI-menopause versus POST-menopause. And you'll be a lot better off if you learn them now, before you have to deal with confusion. If you want a consultation, go to MenopauseTaylor.ME to schedule one. I do them on Skype, FaceTime, Facebook Messenger, as well as in-person. You can include all the things you want to cover when you fill out the form, and then send me any labs or tests you've had. That way, I can incorporate everything into the session. I'll create a personalized document addressing all your concerns, and send it to you at least one day before our session. That way, you 'll have time to read it in advance. It's usually 6 - 12 pages long. Then, I'll have all sorts of props and models to show you during the consultation, and we'll make great headway. You'll understand everything and have all the options tailored specifically to YOU.

@@victoriamurphy9337 Victoria, Consider having a consultation with me if you want to understand everything about your menopause. I'm in the business of educating you about everything you need to know and do in order to get exactly what you want for managing your menopause your way. So, here's how a consultation works: 1) You would schedule a one-on-one consultation at my website, MenopauseTaylor.ME, choosing a time that is convenient for you. I do consultations on Skype, FaceTime. Facebook Messenger, What’s App, and the phone. 2) I would send you an email to confirm that you are scheduled for the stated time, and invite you to send me as much information about yourself as you please. You can make it brimming with details and tell me about your reproductive life, any gynecologic problems you've had, your symptoms of peri-menopause, and your symptoms of post-menopause. You can include all your fears, concerns, and goals for your menopause management. You may also send me any labs, mammogram results, bone density results, etc. that you would like me to include in designing your protocol. For instance, if you want to adhere to a certain category of management options (herbs or diet & lifestyle, or whatever), you should tell me that. I will give you a deadline for sending all materials, and will not accept anything after that date. 3) I'll get busy creating a document that gives you all the education you need to understand absolutely everything, points out the pros and cons of each option, and tailors it all to YOU, using the information you have provided. The document will be loooooong. Most are over 30 pages. 4) I will send you the document by email 48 hours before your consultation. You will benefit greatly by reading it in advance. Light bulbs will go off like crazy, and if you're like most women, you'll feel that you've already gotten your money's worth. 5) During your consultation, we will review the document and address any issues you want in order to fine tune everything and determine your best options. I'll tell you exactly how to find the right kind of professional, how to have the conversation in order to get what you want, and the nuances of things like guidelines and insurance. I leave nothing unaddressed. 6) You will go to a professional of your choosing in order to get the actual hormones or whatever you choose to use. 7) After the first consultation, I'll hold your hand (forever if you want me to). In other words, you'll be able to schedule mini-consultations (15-minute or 30-minute, in addition to full consultations) whenever you need to. I'll keep records of your situation. Most women schedule mini-consultation whenever they go to the doctor and don't understand what he or she said, or why. I translate. I make sense of everything. Most schedule mini-consultation whenever they have a new test and they want me to explain the results. And all schedule mini-consultation whenever their situation changes and they need to re-weigh and re-balance their options. The time you spend with me will make everything about working with any other professional so easy. What would explain menopausal symptoms despite having been on birth control for several years? I'm 47 and have been on low dose combination birth control for endometriosis since after my son's birth nine years ago. I started with Lo Loestrin Fe 1/20 taking the placebos every month until my mid 40's. Then I started having menopause symptoms, ie night sweats, hot flashes, heart palpitations, muscle and joint pain. I recognized these symptoms from when I took Lupron for my endometriosis. So I asked my OB/GYN if we could up the dose to 1.5/30. She agreed, and that helped for a while. But then my symptoms would be bad during my monthly withdrawal bleeding, so I asked if I could just take them continuously and just take the placebo pills every three months. That also worked for awhile. Now for the past few weeks I'm noticing my symptoms again plus brain fog, frequent urination, insomnia and feeling anxious like I'm going to have a panic attack. I am waiting to hear back from my OB/GYN to see what my options are. But based on what you've said, I should not have any menopause symptoms while on combination oral birth control. Is this correct? Have you ever heard of this happening? I also have my yearly physical and blood work scheduled with my GP next month to rule out other health issues, eg hyperthyroidism. Thank you for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge with us ladies. I'm the second oldest of five girls and plan on sharing your KZbin videos with all my sisters.

What a blessing it has been to find your channel! I wish that I had been a little (okay, a lot) more proactive prior to finding myself smack dab in the center of menopause, but thanks to your video series and book I feel less stressed. Between you and my gynecologist, I feel better about this next chapter in my life. I am 55 and will be using the Combipatch (lowest dosage possible). My FSH level is 43. My gynecologist said that I do not need to use any form of back up birth control at this point. Is this really true? I do not know if pregnancy is possible at my age, but either way - I truly would prefer to take a pass on it. You have mentioned that the absence of 12 consecutive periods is a defining factor...since I am newly off the pill (which I have taken for 30 years), I have only missed one period to date. Should I count out 11 more missed periods or am I truly "good to go" without a backup form of BC? My thoughts and prayers are with you and the good people of Houston. Thanks in advance for your guidance.
@MenopauseTaylor

Maria, I'm so honored to be here to help you. I think you're completely safe to assume you can no longer get pregnant. You've handled your transition into menopause in a very methodical, practical manner. Don't be surprised if "The lowest possible dose" of Combipatch is too low at first. Having been on birth control pills, the difference in their dosage of hormones and that in the Combipatch is a huge drop-off. You might find that you need a higher dosage for a while to provide more of a stepwise, gradual transition from birth control to HRT. Listen to your body. It will "talk" to you if your COmbipatch dosage isn't high enough through symptoms of menopause (video 11).

Dr. Taylor, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to respond. I appreciate your guidance so very much! Thank you for the insight with regard to the possible need for a slightly higher dosage as a better means to transition. I do believe that my body is talking to me and is perhaps supporting your observation. My gynecologist mentioned that this would most likely help with my insomnia/hot flashes (the latter are only happening at night at this point). I started the combipatch on 9/21 and am still finding that it takes a good 40-60 minutes to fall asleep and I am still waking up twice a night as a result of the need to throw the covers off of myself (before pulling them back up as a result of freezing). Should I give the patch another week before suggesting the possibility of upping the dosage as a means to a smoother transition? Thank you again for your expertise and kindness. You are an amazing individual and I appreciate you to the nth degree!
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Don't continue to suffer. It makes complete sense that you'd still be having symptoms of menopause, and another week isn't going to make any difference. Call your doctor and request a higher dosage. I think you'll need to double what you're taking now (at the very least). You may even need more than that. But figure this out in a stepwise manner. Double your dosage now, see how you feel, and then adjust as needed. If you get to a point when you're completely happy, don't change anything. (I like to say, "Don't dissect a rose.") I'm always baffled by women who change the things that are working beautifully.

Awesome and so informative. Could one then go back onto birth control just for managing menaupause. I don't have any of the relative symptoms and my hubby also has had his tubs cut. For me it would then be just to manage the use of more estrogen and progesterone ? I am now 53 and not been on birth control for 13 years. Prior since I was early 20?? Would this be an option to go back on? My periods also finished completely about 2 years ago??

Terri, It would not be wise to go back on birth control after being off it for so long. You're better off with the lower doses in hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which I;ll discuss in the next video. You can take it in a manner that does not produce periods.

If I have not been on birth control pills and I am 47, would this apply to me as well? Would it not be wise to go on birth control pills? You mentioned to a few ladies (they were 51, 52, 53 years old)) that the risk outweighs the benefits. But in a comment of this section you said to someone who is my age that it would be a good idea to go on birth control pills as a menopause treatment and that birth control offers greater benefits than HRT. You said because she is still young (at 47) that she would be a great candidate for it and she could stay on B.C until age 55. So I am just a bit confused...how she could stay on birth control until 55 even though she just started using them at 47 but someone who is 52 should go on birth control? Thank you so much

Xulane is perfect for you! First, it contains both estrogen and progesterone, which you need since you still have your uterus. Second, it contains a higher dosage of estrogen and progesterone than there is in HRT. This is ideal because the younger you are, the higher the dosage you need. Third, it's easy and you shouldn't forget to use it. Fourth, you can use it in either a cyclic manner or in a continuous manner. The cyclic regimen involves skipping the patch for one week every three weeks. The continuous regimen involves never skipping the patch.

I don't have insurance and I am on a budget so going to a menopause specialist at the moment is not possible. I found out about a website called Nurx where one can order birth control pills. Apparently this website has been around for a while but I just found out about it. I am 48 and officially started menopause several months ago. I was experiencing most of the symptoms of menopause and suffering. I started eating organic fermented soy products and taking isoflavone supplements and that has helped but I still didn't feel my best. So I did the online medical history questionnaire on the Nurx website and before long I was sent the birth control pill Junel Fe. I feel sooooo much better but I think I may want to try the Amethyst since it is continuous and non cyclic.

So informative. I'm taking Sprintec and I know I'm in perimenopause from the hormone bloodwork I've done on the placebos. My mom and sister went into it early at 40 as well. My dr recommends staying on it, but my main side effect is mood swings seem to be getting worse. Would a pill with 2 different types of hormones make a difference? Also, does doing IVF several times and progesterone shots through a triplet pregnancy have an effect on going into perimenopause early? So glad I found your channel!
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think your infertility affects when yo went through menopause. But I do think you're best off staying on some form of birth control if you're younger than 45. You need higher doses of hormones the younger you are. And NEVER assume you can't get pregnant ... especially when your hormones go crazy during peri-menopause. There as so many different kinds of birth control, precisely so that you can find the one that's right for you. Call your doctor and tell him or her that you're moody on this particular pill. He or she can call your pharmacy and switch you to one that will cause less or no moodiness. DOn't give up. There's a good option for you, even if you have to try a few first. It's just like having to kiss a few frogs before finding prince charming.

Wow so very informative. I think this may be a better option for me than the HRT I have been on for the last 3 months to help with my daily headaches and monthly migraines, which has not helped anyway. Will mention this to my doctor, who I think I have to educate lol. I have not been on birth control for a very long time and still have regular periods at 52 my only symptoms have been these headaches the last couple of years. Do you think this is a better option to regulate the hormonal fluctuations causing the headaches? Thank you so much I am addicted to these vids.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Michelle, Think of it this way: The younger you are, the higher dosages of hormones you need to alleviate your symptoms. Why? Because your body is used to high levels of estrogen and progesterone when you're young. And because your body is used to those higher dosages, the risks of taking birth control are low. But, the older you are, the lower the dosages of hormones you need to alleviate your symptoms. Why? Because as you age and your normal hormone levels drop, your body becomes less used to hit dosages of hormones. The dosages of hormones in birth control are much higher than the dosages in HRT. So, if you told me you had been on birth control for years, and were still on it at age 52, I'd say, "Heck, stay on it until you're 55. There's very little risk." But, since you haven't been on it for a very long time and you're 52, the risks might be greater than the benefits. You could just take higher-than-normal dosages of HRT and get the best of both worlds. Your migraines are most likely a result of too little estrogen. So maybe you can take higher dosages of estrogen in the form of HRT. That way, you an tweak the dosage to what's just right for you, without incurring extra risks. If you have even the slightest misunderstanding of any of this, please don't hesitate to ask me more questions.I want to help you feel your very best.

Thank you so much. I have learnt so much form your videos, amazing. I am off to see my doctor today. I have noticed that when I put on the combined progesterone/estrogen patch week 3&4, I am on 50/140 estalis sequi week 1&2, 3&4, I start to get the headaches and then it continues until I finish my period and start the week 1& 2 which then sometimes gives me a week break from headaches. This is where you need a good doctor to tweak the HRT.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, so that tells me that your headaches have to do with the fluctuating levels of hormones. The fluctuation are due to the fact that you're on a cyclic regime (that produces a period). Maybe you'd be better off on a continuous regimen that doesn't allow you to have a period at all. The difference with a continuous regimen is that your hormone levels would remain the same, day after day after day. And if your hormone levels are always the same, you probably won't get headaches at all. Make sure you work with a GYNECOLOGIST, preferably one who does a lot of menopause or only menopause. The average Internal Medicine Physician, Family Practitioner, or General Practitioner will not know enough to tweak this perfectly for you. And it's important because it could make the difference in whether you ever have another headache. Oh, I so hope this is the answer!

Love your informational videos! Quick question; if I take birth control during peri menopause, how will I know when I’ve reached post menopause? I just turned 53, & I’m in peri menopause, & do not take birth control, or anything to manage my symptoms....yet. I’m trying to decide which method might be best for me. I’ve not taken birth control pills in the past (except a few years in my 20’s) because of all the misconceptions regarding birth control pills...now because of your videos, I sure wish I had! I’m leaning toward using either birth control pills (or patch or ring), or cyclic regimen hrt. Just wondering if I do those methods, will I know when post menopause has hit?
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 6 жыл бұрын
Cathy, Your question confuses me. Have you watched video 11? It explains the signs and symptoms of menopause. One of the 22 signs and symptoms of menopause is periods that disappear. By definition, you have reached "post-menopause" when you have gone 12 CONSECUTIVE months with no period. There are academically distinct "phases" of peri-menopause and "post-menopause." But you don't have to prove to anyone that you've reached post-menopause. Remember, menopause is puberty in reverse (video 6). Puberty is when you begin your reproductive life. Menopause is when you end your reproductive life. So, did you have to get a diagnostic test to prove to yourself or to the world that you had entered puberty? Did you have to get a diagnostic test to prove that you had finished the transition through puberty? No. Your bodily changes, your moods, your relationship stress, and your psychological state were all so obviously due to puberty that you didn’t need any labs to tell you what was happening. Menopause is no different. You, and everyone around you is going to know that something’s happening. Like puberty, you don’t transition through peri-menopause into post-menopause overnight. It’s a transition that takes time - 2 - 10 years for some women. And you don’t know the exact moment at which you finish the transition and become post-menopausal any more than you know the exact moment you finish puberty and become post-pubertal. Hormonal transitions are like a rollercoaster. Multiple hormones change gradually. But the process is not predictable or logical. It’s chaotic. That’s why your life is chaotic during these transitions. So, your periods disappearing is what most women use to determine when they've reached post-menopause. But some women have no uterus. They rely on the other 21 signs and symptoms. If you aren't already on birth control pills, it's unlikely that a physician will start you on them now. And most women who are 53 and already taking birth control pills switch them for HRT at the age of 55. To address your particular best options, you would benefit from a one-on-one consultation with me. I find that most women have watched some or al the videos. But, they still need me to tailor the information just for them. If you schedule a consultation, I'll review everything and connect all the dots for you. There are soooooo many things to consider and balance that you will really shoot yourself in the foot if you try to address this as a "quick fix." You've posed many questions. And I KNOW a consultation would be the very best thing for you. If you want a consultation, go to MenopauseTaylor.ME to schedule one. I do them on Skype, FaceTime, and Facebook Messenger. You can include all the things you want to cover when you fill out the form, and then send me any labs or tests you've had. That way, I can incorporate everything into the session. I'll create a personalized document addressing all your concerns, and send it to you at least one day before our session. That way, you'll have time to read it in advance. It's usually over 12 pages long. We'll make great headway during the consultation. You'll understand everything and have all the options tailored specifically to YOU.

Menopause Barbie - thank you for another clear and informative video! You mentioned transitioning from high dose to low dose at a certain age in the video. You also mentioned symptoms returning if somone takes a break. Doed this mean that if I go on the patch (say, Combi Patch) for menopause relief that I will have to stay on it the rest of my life in order to not deal with the symptoms? For example, if I start HRT in my late 40's, should I expect to be on it until say my 80's or 90's if I even live that long? Or is there an age where one is expected to transition off?

Every woman is different. Some choose to stay on hormones forever. Some choose to decrease the dose to as minimal as possible. Some choose to stop hormones at some time. Sometimes a new medical problem dictates what you have to do. But if you stop taking hormones, you will likely start noticing some symptoms of menopause. They may be milder as you get older. Or, they may just stay the same over time.

I tried hrt twice and both times it made me a moody and nervous wreck. The last attempt I did excellent for the first 2.5 weeks and then plummeted with crushing fatigue and extreme anxiety. I am 38 and have pof. My new gynecologist couldn't tell me why I had that reaction to hrt. Maybe I was getting too much of either progestrin or estraogen? He did say I absolutely needs hormones. He gave my Taytulla which I'm hoping works out better. I just started yesterday. I'm scared I'll go through that again. I'm hoping that the pill works better since it takes over for my existing hormones and doesn't just supplement existing hormones. I havent taken the pill in over 9 years. Fingers crossed. 🤞

Hi Barbie! My Dr and I have agreed that I should continue to use birth control to manage peri menopause symptoms (I am 50 and have been on birth control for 30 years). My question: is it possible to experience symptoms of menopause while on birth control? I am getting night sweats, hot flashes, and I never get a good nights sleep-which then results in fatigue, foggy brain, exhaustion, etc. I had breakthrough bleeding a few years ago, but that has since subsided. Could I be doing something else in addition to the birth control for these next few years?
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Most women who use birth control have no symptoms of menopause. However, think of it like this: Before your hormones started decreasing as a result of menopause, you had your own hormones PLUS the hormones in your birth control. Now, fast forward to where you are now. You're probably "post-menopausal" That means your own body is no longer producing any hormones. All you have is the hormones in your birth control. So, you've still had a decrease in the overall quantity of hormones in your body. And your symptoms are a result of that decrease. You're not at zero, and will never be with your birth control. But you're body knows there's a difference in the level of hormones you used to have and the level you have now. If you think of it that way, it makes sense. You can still treat your symptoms by either changing to a different birth control with a different hormone ratio or using other non-hormonal treatments for each symptom individually.

I still have my periods but they have been late or early recently. I am considering birth control but wondering which one to pick. Do you prefer one over the others to start with? If pills, then which would you suggest? Mono phasic, tri phasic, cyclic, continuous? Thanks for all you do!!

Menopause Taylor Thank you! Would you be able to prescribe HRT with these consultations? I feel that I would prefer a more targeted hrt, not so much a bc pill. I don’t know if perhaps I have a progesterone deficiency? I also don’t want to suppress testosterone which I believe can happen with the bc pill. I am not bothered by my nights sweats, nor concerned with pregnancy as my husband had a vasectomy years ago. What I want is to have less mood swings, better sex drive, protect bone/muscle, and metal clarity. Thank you again! 🥰

Hi Dr Taylor, just wanted to know is Diane 35 considered a normal BCP? It was singled out recently as a drug that really shouldn’t have be prescribed as a BCP - it’s more an anti androgen. Due to my problems with acne at the time, my GP at the time had prescribed it to me at the age of 24. I stayed on it until 39 years old with only a couple years break in my early thirties when I fell pregnant and had my son. Looking back, my symptoms commenced in the final months I was on the drug, and infact, it was one of the reasons I stopped it. I started having palpitations even though they were not recognized as such at the time, I thought it was bronchial spasms or reflux. Then the press came out about Diane 35 being banned in France and I was glad I stopped it. But within 6 months all the perimenopausal symptoms (including worsening heart palpitations) hit me like an avalanche and Perimenopause was diagnosed by my gyno. That was 8 years ago, My point is, if Diane was a proper BCP, should it not have prevented the palpitations? And the palpitations were definitely due to hormonal fluctuations, I had a full work up by an cardiologist twice.

Hello! I'm really enjoying your tutorials. (And I did start at the beginning 😊). I am going through peri-menopause and am really interested in maybe taking the birth control you mentioned in this tutorial. But how do you know you are post-menopause if the birth control medicine is either making you not have a period at all or making you have one depending on the regimen? So you know when to go to HRT (the lower dosage of hormones). Thank you in advance for your help!
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 5 жыл бұрын
Did you have to get a diagnostic test to prove to yourself or to the world that you had entered puberty? And if you're on birth control pills, you make the whole process. Hallelujah to that! Hormonal transitions are like a rollercoaster. Multiple hormones change gradually. But the process is not predictable or logical. It’s chaotic. That’s why your life is chaotic during these transitions. From an academic standpoint, we neatly divide menopause into phases: Peri-menopause and post-menopause. And, if humans were textbooks or robots, the phases would be perfectly defined. But we aren’t textbooks or robots. Our lives are a combination of many things that no hormone can measure. So, although it may be interesting to “diagnose” your peri- or post-menopause, you certainly do not have to do so. It's gonna happen. You don't have to know the precise timing.

You have your hormones mixed up. Progestogen withdrawal is what CAUSES breakthrough bleeding. And the little bit of estrogen in the estrogen-only pills is still inadequate if you are a peri-menopausal woman or post-menopausal woman. In both cases, your own body is not producing enough estrogen to avoid estrogen deficiency during those 7 days.

I am very healthy; diet and exercise- without any side effects I have osteopenia in my low back. I will be 54 in two months. I have been without a period for one year as of last month. I actually didn’t realize that birth control pills were higher dosage than HRT . I was going to speak to a gynecologist who specializes in menopause and switch to HRT once I knew what was right for me. But it sounds like what you’re saying is that I can stay on birth control pills until I am 55. As long as I am not experiencing any side effects. I also was diagnosed with a small fibroid 10 years ago which was the main reason for going back on birth control. Thank you so much for all that you do for us women!! I bought your book too!!

Querida Barbie, i needed a tutorial like this. I have a question though, and given that my case is "odd" i must confess i am completely lost and doctors have not been able to help me find the best treatment for me. I have premature ovarian failure, i am 36 and was diagnosed at 33. My main symptom apart from not having periods were the hot flashes. Most doctors told me to simply take the birth control pill. I have taken it for about 1 year now, as the first two years i tried homeopathy (didn´t work for me) and a form of HRT which was terrible for my body. But speaking of bad, my problem with birth control has to do with the side effects. I have a tendency to depression and really the pill has made it a lot worse (in fact i am on antidepressants since last month) plus my hair, the only thing i like from myself, has gone from voluminous and really curly to thin and kind of getting straight on some parts of my scalp!!! I am desperate and don´t know what to do but i am only 36 and can´t feel like this for 20 more years honestly... Any thoughts about what a girl with POF can do? Gracias, besitos.
@MenopauseTaylor

Nat, The most important thing for you to know is that, because your menopause occurred so early, you MUST prevent some of the long-term diseases for which menopause puts you at risk. These include: heart attack, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's disease. So, while hot flashes and hair thinning are important now, you also have to prevent these diseases. I went into menopause at age 34, so I'm in your same situation. Taking hormones is almost mandatory for us. And the younger you are, the higher the dosages of hormones your body requires to function normally. Birth control is your best bet because it contains dosages that are suitable for your age. And you can stay on them until you're about 55. There are so many birth control options for you. They have different kinds of estrogen and progesterone in them so that you can find one that suits you. Tell your doctor that depression is an issue. There are many birth control options that decrease depression. And you can use pills or a patch or a vaginal ring. Please, please don't think of your menopause as equivalent to that of a women at age 50. It's a completely different matter for you. Please ask me as many questions as you can. I'm happy to answer all of them. I want to ensure that you're healthy and happy from the hairs on your head to your heart, bones, and brain ... now and for the rest of your life.

Thank you so much, your answer nearly made me cry, as i feel quite lonely on this, in fact i haven´t told some important people in my life because i still don´t accept this happened to me, i keep dreaming one day i am going to get over it, as i lost my period in a strange way. I had a very difficult time back 3 years ago, i was really shocked and then period stopped suddenly, so i believe it has a psychological origin... I was not planning to have children when pof was diagnosed but it was still shocking and i found out in a not very sensitive way from the person in the lab who saw my extremely high fsh. I have studied a lot the topic but some periods i was just so overwhelmed and sad about it that i simply stopped studying. Now i feel i have the right to get a proper treatment and believe me, most doctors i have seen don´t seem to care too much. I am going to an endocrinologist next week hoping he can suggest something that, as you mentioned, doesn´t increase my depression and maybe he can also help with the hair problem. Do you think antidepressants can be a problem while taking hormones? I have been so sad recently i cry a lot but i have always been a fighter and now it can´t be any different.

@MenopauseTaylor 3 жыл бұрын
Age 55 is the standard age for switching from birth control pills to HRT. Pregnancy is highly unlikely at that point.

Is it possible to use biodentical HRT in a manner that will produce more regular periods? My doc has me on Evamist 2sprays a day and 100mg prometrium (generic ) daily. I feel so much better after I have a period! A lot of the creams , I notice, have you three weeks on, one week off.

Yes, Amy. You can adjust your timing of progesterone so that you have regular periods. It would entail using the Evamist all by itself for about half of your cycle, and then just adding the progesterone to it for a designated number of days. That would produce a period. If you use both your Evamist and your progesterone every single day, you probably won't have a period.

So at age 39, which kind of pill would be best? One with the same dosage each week or the trifecta?

"Best" is a marketing word. There is nothing that is "best" for all women. We are not robots. This is precisely the kind of thing for which I do one-on-one consultations. You definitely need one. I cannot tailor things specifically to you in a comment box. It requires much more information than you can give me here, and you deserve much more information than I can give you here. No two women are alike, and addressing your situation requires tailoring all the facts specifically to YOU. I do them all via online video conferencing. You can schedule at MenopauseTaylor.ME. I look forward to meeting you and helping you.

Are migraines with aura still a contraindication for taking birth control pills? I experience aura with my migraines a few times a year, yet my doctor recently prescribed me BCP, which has me feeling very uneasy.

Thank you!! I’m 44 and been on bc pills since I was 18 but docs tell me I need to stop taking them by now but even on the pills, just started getting night sweats, joint pain, extra headaches, low mood, extra fatigue…. So after hearing this, I want to stay on the pill maybe just higher dose?

Dr. Taylor, I have an important question that I can’t seem to get help with. I do know it’s safe to add a testosterone cream with birth control but will it actually help with the low libido that birth control can cause?

Thank you very much in advance. I’m 51 premenopausal and taking bio identical estrogen gel in the morning and progesterone at night plus DHEA 10mg in the morning. when I started I had not had a period for 6 months. How will I know when my menopause had arrived ? My reason for taking HRT was joint pain and stiffness. How ever the HRT has not made any difference after taking it for 8 months. Should I continue if its not benefiting my arthritis? My arthritis and inflammation is driving me mad, Im slim and weight train I noticed you mentioned you also suffer from arthritis can you advise me more of what you do. Im negative for RA but have many of the symtoms. It all started when my periods started getting irratic. I feel so stiff like an old lady. I eat an anti inflammatory diet and tons of supplements with the guidance of a nutrionist but its not working. The doctor wants me to take pregnazone but Im holding off. I would love your advice :))

My guess is that the bioidentical hormones are not strong enough to make a difference for you. Bioidentical hormones are much, much weaker than synthetic hormones. I can tell you that I tried them, and loved the idea of them. But my body was not satisfied. (This is the phenomenon in which my brain and my body did not agree.) Your joints are telling you that they NEED more estrogen! If you want bioidentical hormones, you can get bioidentical estrogen and progesterone in the form of a pharmaceutical product that will make a huge difference. Almost all of the pharmaceutical estrogen creams, vaginal rings, sprays, and patches are bioidentical. Watch video 33 to learn about this. There are also pharmaceutical forms of progesterone. Some products have both estrogen & progesterone in balanced ratios in them. Your testosterone is fine as is. There are no pharmaceutical testosterone products made specifically for women, and you want to take that in very low doses. So your bioidentical testosterone is fine. If you change your estrogen & progesterone to pharmaceutical products, you'll notice a huge improvement. Be sure to take the equivalent of 0.1 mg of estradiol. A dosage lower than that will probably be insufficient. Please let me know how you respond.

Hi, I don't have liver disease, but 7 years ago I had high liver enzymes. What caused my enzymes to go up was medication that I was taking for anxiety and depression. My liver enzymes have been normal now for 6 years. My doctor just prescribed me birth control pills for HRT. I am 47 years old. Do you think that me having high liver enzymes in the past put me in danger for blood clots?

All birth control that contains BOTH ESTROGEN and progestogen prevents the 3 diseases of estrogen deficiency. Progestin-only birth control prevents none fo the diseases of estrogen deficiency.
