Actually, it is okay if you talk more about your analysis about the shadow, and what kind of shadow these superstars having. Like, we woud never know why they always said that they were lonely because they looks like having party all the time, went to this award shows, invited to this gala dinner, or become a muse to this fashion brand. It's like a such happy life. And it will be good if you also spread mental health awareness with your analysis. I would love to hear more from you.

You're spot on with your initial thoughts. He's afraid of letting the greedy/self-centered/dark side of himself overtake him as he rises to fame. When the song becomes more aggressive, that's the shadow singing. It's saying that no matter what they're still both him and he might as well acknowledge that it's there and basically learn to love all sides of himself. At the same time it's also about the pros and cons of fame. The admiration and invasion. Flying high means riscing a fall.

In the *full extended vers.* there is a 2nd verse where the *shadow* talks: [Try smiling, what are you hesitating for? Wasn't this the kind of thing you were hoping for? Or cry instead, what are you scared of? Wasn't this the kind of thing you'd been wanting? The life you hoped for, the live you wanted The life you chose, you achieved everything without regrets And on top of that, you have a big house, big cars, big rings All the things you wanted, you've got it all So whats the problem? Just enjoy it Or just let it go, no? Then run or stop Don't whine, just choose one or the other] *Also a pre-chorus:* [You're saying i never told you that? (Yeah, yeah) You're asking me if i really didn't know? (Oh no) I'll simply take just as much as you own, whatever it is That at times, your rest becomes your fall Do you finally get it? That giving it your best effort every time is what it means to do your best]

I just love how Suga and BTS have used leitmotifs, because their ideas of so many things have evolved. The theme of "Run or stop?" goes through Nevermind, Run, Persona, Moonlight, and Suga's Interlude just to name a few, and then Suga's famous 'big house big cars big rings' goes through No More Dream, Home, Shadow, and What Do You Think? It's a shame the extended version of Shadow isn't as popular, as well as Suga's Interlude. Halsey really wanted HIM on her album and he sure as hell gave her that.

Suga starts with chanting the things he used to say he wanted - but he suddenly wakes up and realises that he has all those things but now the spotlight is too strong which has made his shadow grow beyond his control. He didn't know how scary and lonely fame would make him - the higher you are the harder you fall so he starts pleading to not let him shine, don't let him fly or fall, but then his shadow speaks up and says: You're me, and I'm you - don't you get it? You just have to embrace your shadow to make us whole because you will never be able to get rid of me - this then leads to the Outro: Ego which is the person complete after embracing their shadow and becoming a stronger whole :)

I love your reactions to BTS Doc. Did you notice how at the begining it is like he is just starting to become famous, so it is esay and relaxed. But by the end it is hectic and distorted, like the fame has pulled him out of joint. Like that about this song, it shows the progression.

In the song SUGA recounts the struggles of not wanting to reach one’s own dreams in fear of the darkness, or shadow, that comes with them. Opening with the narration of his aspirations, the passionate song devolves to reveal the fear of things like loneliness and burning out young. The track then ends with the sentiment that everyone feels this way and that this feeling is unavoidable, ultimately leaving a sense of acceptance. A the end of the song where it gets more intense starting with "Yeah I'm you, you are me, now do you know" that whole ending part is Suga's shadow talking to him. Referring to Yoongi’s stage self (SUGA), his shadow, and his true self (Min Yoongi), he comes to the conclusion that they are all the same. These lines are spoken in the second person, making the personification of his shadow clearer. The song moves into a much clearer, Minor key with a much more chaotic vocal tone and beat. It’s almost as if his persona or ego spoke in the first half of the song and this second half, the more chaotic and dark half is from the perspective of his shadow talking back. In terms of Jungian philosophy, one can have a very conflicted time in their mind if one doesn’t come to terms with their own shadow. SUGA’s shadow is saying they are the same and the, ‘now do you know?’ suggests that SUGA is still coming to terms with this, hence why his mind and the song sounds chaotic.

The Album is "Map of the Soul(: 7)". It is a book about Jungian psychology. Persona, Shadow & Ego but also all other songs on the series Albums (especially the singles) are applied Jungian psychology, of becoming oneself, growing up. Suga raps on a sample of their old song (the title of their second Mini-Album is projected in the MV multiple times: O!RUL8,2? [OH! ARE YOU LATE, TOO?]). He is contemplative about what he once said he wished to be. We see him as the shadow first before the glass/mirror is rebuilt to his white/conscious self. He speaks about his shadow/his fear first before he lets the shadow/his unconsciousness take over the song when the glass breaks by the mic dropping and shattering it and the beat changes drasticly. His shadow tells him that he is part of Suga/Yoongi no matter how hard he fights or tries to run. We all fear our "shadow", what we find unaccaptable about ourself/our conflicts/fear etc... Suga speaks about the loneliness he fears in his fame. But ultimatly the conflict can't be run from: It is part of himself. The solution? Not in this song. But he needs to accept his shadow/the price for his wish. But ultimatly he is describing his shadow in the song the same way RM described his Persona he is threatened to vanishes under in his. Bookish Theorie I believe has a (two) good video Analysis of it as has DKDKTV. 💜

The comparison to Linkin Park was well justified. I'm a huge fan of both groups, and both have a tendency to write lyrics that challenge your thoughts, they focus on emotion and can be felt by people in a wide range of situations. People always compare BTS to the Beatles or Michael Jackson, and these are also fitting, but for me BTS make music that hits me the same way that Linkin Park has since I was in my late teens.
@AngelaSealana3 жыл бұрын
Yup, the brighter the spotlight, the more intense the shadow. SUGA has been real about this in his life. ARMY enjoys overanalyzing, no worries. 🤭 P.S. I don't think not knowing who Linkin Park is has anything to do with being ARMY, it's more about age 😉

There is a lot of good insight here but I'll add my two cents. In 2018 BTS almost disbanded. They were struggling with the rate at which their popularity was growing. Suga stated "we're just singers and dancers. We never meant to become global ambassadors for our country, we never meant to break every record or be compared to the Beatles." RM went on to say that they just kept going up and up until they found themselves in the stratosphere wondering if they were ever going to come down. It was frightening for them and they weren't sure this was really what they wanted. I think they spent a large portion of 2018 wondering if they were worthy, wondering if this path was worth the price. At the same time they were worried about losing themselves in the fame, losing their identities, losing their souls to greed and material wealth. These are issues that would never cross the mind of an American artist but BTS members are extremely introspective and have a strong sense of responsibility to their families, their country, and their fans. Several songs were born from this period in their lives and this was one of them. The bright side of the story is that they decided to stay together and to not only accept but embrace what was happening to them. This was a turning point for all the members and I think that making that decision freed them. Freed them of the doubts and the fears and you can feel that in their music and in themselves. They lightened up a lot, turned away from "perfection" and focused more on individual expression. I think this was also a turning point for them in terms of their relationship with BigHit and BangPD. Until then BTS were employees, but after they signed their new contract at the end of 2018 they became more partners and they took more control of their albums and their presentation.

You cannot really over analyse BTS lyrics. Thanks to the influence they have on each other. RMs lyricism and poetry( 148IQ) Sugas brutal honesty and emotional intelligence. Suga openly talks about when BTS first blew up really big he developed severe social anxiety. He also has OCD and suffered from depression. Because Sugas family were going through a tough time they could not financialy support him. So he secretly broke his contract working as a delivery driver on the side. When he was involved in a horrific accident he dared not tell anybody and loose his big opportunity. So at the same time as this non dancer was working hard to learn to dance then at night compising and producing and getting little sleep he was in terrible pain. The result of this had him literally hidding in the bathroom crying at a concert. When you are on stage the bright bright lights cast a long dark shadow.

You should watch the explained videos for Persona and Shadow. They're just as deep as you're thinking. Also random question, what's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
@angiesplaylist233 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about globally but in the United States, psychiatry requires a doctorate from medical school so they can prescribe medication to treat people. Psychologist requires a masters degree and is known for more counciling or other ways to help people with psyc issues outside of taking medication. They can study a specific subject under psychology like child psyc, behavioral psyc, clinical psyc, developmental psyc, etc. Basically if someone has depression then they can go to a psychiatrist and get medication to help. If a child has autism then they can go to a psychologist who can help the child as well as teaching the parents how to help their child. Sorry that was a long explanation lol

I am surprised you never mentioned Jungian psychology. This song be an applied exposition of Jung's theories as are BTS songs such as Persona, Ego, On and Black Swan. The Shadow being part of the unconscious within the Psyche tends to expand into the conscious and challenge one's Persona (s) as light is shone on those Personas. Suga is experiencing these fears and doubts. He must individuate and integrate Shadow elements. In this song the individuation process is depicted rather darkly. The second verse of the song literally is the Shadow speaking. In other songs it is given a more optimistic, productive light.
