this is a literal insecurity of mines and its so embarrassing because im 17 :/ I've had numerous occasions in school and at home where i got put on the spot and i couldn't answer correctly. I would get anxious when people would ask me to work it out orally rather than having it written out infront of me, its so weird because once i see the numbers written under the next i start working it out visually and i answer in less than 10 seconds but when someone asks me its like 1-2 mins.. because i have to ask them to remind me of it like 3 times and then i start acting fidgety and start all over again if they watch me like "is she fr.." ugh! I just really want to learn how to focus on bettering my mental solving skills because i am so fascinated by the quickness of it with other people and also because i never wanna experience that kind of embarrassment ever again LOL. So from tomorrow ill be dedicating one hour to ridding this insecurity of mines and ill be coming back to this comment section to remind myself of my progress.

The trick is to have different ways of doing the same sum so you can check your answer. Then even if you make a mistake you will know it and be able to correct it. The important thing is not to worry about speed but to concentrate on getting the right answer. If you do the sum one way then reverse the sequence to check your result. Very often you will discover that these 'other' ways are actually faster & easier to do. But they are not generally taught in schools. You find them in Speed/Mental Maths books.

Yup, the way they teach us in school, to add from right to left, while perhaps more basic, straightforward, and technically correct from the standpoint of teaching how to do the problem, it could be considered backward, it's generally easier to add from left to right starting with bigger numbers. I mean, just trying to teach my nephew extremely simple adding problems using flashcards, I realized it's much easier to add a small number to a big number rather than a big number to a small number, in fact, it's actually what he did. For example,17 + 5 is much easier than 5 + 17, it's just the way our mind works, at least for most people. When I asked my nephew what is 5 + 17, he would always do 17 + 5. With 37 + 68, I would say 30 and 60 is 90, and 7 and 8 is 15, then 90 + 15 + 105, easy. It's much easier than doing 8 + 7 is 15, so write 5 and carry one, then 3 + 6 equals 9, then add the one we carried over and get 10, and 5, which makes 105.

If to do it 'in the head' it's much easier to deal with 'rounded' numbers than to keep in mind each result for units and decimals and then adding both results together. The 'tricks' from this video suites more for counting with a pen and paper. Better trick is to start imagining numbers in a bit differet way like: 55-39 => (55+1) - 40 43 + 17 => 40 + 20 37 + 68 => 40 + (68-3) or (37-2) + 70

shouldnt 43+5 be 48?

For (37 + 68) I round up to (40 + 70) which equals 110 and then subtract the the difference from the rounded up numbers to the original set. So, 110-5 = 105

You said, "43 + 7 = 50". But wrote "43 + 5 = 50." Good one.
