For those struggling with doing math in their head, I recommend using an app called “Mental Math” You have the option of doing (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division). There’s 3 different levels to choose from, so you can start on whatever you feel comfortable with. I myself use the app since i’m struggling myself.

this is a literal insecurity of mines and its so embarrassing because im 17 :/ I've had numerous occasions in school and at home where i got put on the spot and i couldn't answer correctly. I would get anxious when people would ask me to work it out orally rather than having it written out infront of me, its so weird because once i see the numbers written under the next i start working it out visually and i answer in less than 10 seconds but when someone asks me its like 1-2 mins.. because i have to ask them to remind me of it like 3 times and then i start acting fidgety and start all over again if they watch me like "is she fr.." ugh! I just really want to learn how to focus on bettering my mental solving skills because i am so fascinated by the quickness of it with other people and also because i never wanna experience that kind of embarrassment ever again LOL. So from tomorrow ill be dedicating one hour to ridding this insecurity of mines and ill be coming back to this comment section to remind myself of my progress.

4:41 - here's another trick, if you have something like 55-39 it might be easier to do "55 - 40 = 15" in your head and then add 1 (15+1=16) ust don't forget about adding that spare number in the end. Same with: 52 - 38 = 52 - 40 +2 = 14

This is validating how I created my own mental math in my head as a kid. I felt so confused why we didn't do it this way and thought maybe my way was the wrong way and begrudgingly stuck with the slower method because that was what we were taught... I still do it my way in my head but I always felt like it was a secret... until now... Thank you for validating my young self on how to do math.
@hrthrhs

Wow your technique actually is quicker for me. What I normally would do was round to the nearest 10 and add/subract that. So with 72 - 24 i would think 72 - 20 = 52, then minus 4 more. Your technique is better. Thanks heaps. I googled random number generator and just kept adding random numbers memtally. Really helps.

@LoradLP 2 жыл бұрын
55 - 39 i would have done differently. 55 - 40 = 15 15 + 1 =16 Rounding up numbers with a large last digit and correcting afterwards is faster for me. Operations like 55 - 9 where I have to update multiple digits of the total always take me a bit longer.

The trick is to have different ways of doing the same sum so you can check your answer. Then even if you make a mistake you will know it and be able to correct it. The important thing is not to worry about speed but to concentrate on getting the right answer. If you do the sum one way then reverse the sequence to check your result. Very often you will discover that these 'other' ways are actually faster & easier to do. But they are not generally taught in schools. You find them in Speed/Mental Maths books.

As you say, it doesn't matter whether you go right to left or left to right, but do you think it's a good idea to switch back and forth? Doing it the same way every time eliminates a decision from the process and making your technique more automatic and reliable. Just my opinion. Your videos are excellent.

for 43 + 17 i did 7 + 3 = 10 and then 4 + 1 = 5. 510 minus the 1 (Because it makes logical sense that it wouldn't be that big) in the 10 = 50.

I'm here because I have aphantasia, which has always prevented me from being able to see/imagine numbers in my head in order to add and subtract. I've always had to count on my fingers or write things down and do it long handed. Sadly once I started using a calculator all of my math skills I managed to learn went out the window and now I struggle with even simple addition/subtraction...so here I am! I hope this helps.

If to do it 'in the head' it's much easier to deal with 'rounded' numbers than to keep in mind each result for units and decimals and then adding both results together. The 'tricks' from this video suites more for counting with a pen and paper. Better trick is to start imagining numbers in a bit differet way like: 55-39 => (55+1) - 40 43 + 17 => 40 + 20 37 + 68 => 40 + (68-3) or (37-2) + 70

his method is a little backwards. it's better to work with tens when adding the one's column, the carried number is always gonna be one. I would not recommend this method. nice voice though

Yup, the way they teach us in school, to add from right to left, while perhaps more basic, straightforward, and technically correct from the standpoint of teaching how to do the problem, it could be considered backward, it's generally easier to add from left to right starting with bigger numbers. I mean, just trying to teach my nephew extremely simple adding problems using flashcards, I realized it's much easier to add a small number to a big number rather than a big number to a small number, in fact, it's actually what he did. For example,17 + 5 is much easier than 5 + 17, it's just the way our mind works, at least for most people. When I asked my nephew what is 5 + 17, he would always do 17 + 5. With 37 + 68, I would say 30 and 60 is 90, and 7 and 8 is 15, then 90 + 15 + 105, easy. It's much easier than doing 8 + 7 is 15, so write 5 and carry one, then 3 + 6 equals 9, then add the one we carried over and get 10, and 5, which makes 105.

for subtraction i do the units first so for his example its 82-14 I do 2-4 which is -2 (or do 4-2 =2 then add a '-' in front of the 2) then I save the -2 for later, then work out 8-1 which is 7 and then just do 80-2 to get the last digit so the answer is 78
