I'm a 51 year old who has struggled with math for years. I've always did the single digits like this, thinking it was just simply a survival skill, but I NEVER knew it had a name!!! You blew me away with the double digits though!!! I had always started out by panicking with the borrowing thing! Not anymore after some practice. Thanks so much!!! Passing this on to my 12 year old who struggles like me😊

Thanks! Actually, it isn't "recognizing" my handwriting. I use a tablet and the software is adobe illustrator. It has a pen tool such that when I write, the software smooths out the kinks in my writing. It looks like it i understanding it but it is really just smoothing out the little jiggles for me as I write. Hope this helps!

Now try learning complements with a different base. For example a base of 6, how far away is 3 from 6? It's 3. how far away is 2 from 6? It's 4. do that with all the numbers and you'll become really good.

this is the simplest lesson yet the most impactful lesson i have ever watched. This clears up so much. Why they HELL do they not teach this in schools. I am 30 and i just found out i love math because of lessons like this. I used to hate math. But now i realize it was because the way we were taught.
@rhondamolix-bailey97439 жыл бұрын
+ItsRud1 Compliments are a regular part of 1st grade and 2nd grade mathematics, they are called compliments in some states and in other states they use the term fact families. The fact families are based on Base 10, since that is the number system we use. I am sorry that you missed this somewhere along the way. One thing that I do want to point out is that somewhere along the line, we got away from teaching good solid mathematics, it really all started with No Child Left Behind and the testing hysteria. Here is a lesson on compliments that you might love when you are shopping. You go in a store and see that a pair of jeans is 40% off and the jeans cost $78.95. How much will the jeans cost you? Well the compliment of 40% off is 60% on--you will pay 60% of the price. Does that make sense. Now we're going to use some quick number sense. The jeans at %78.95 are approximately $80.00, so just multiply 8 x6 = $48. The jeans will cost you about $48.00. Make sense. We only multiplied the front two digits because in base 10 the 0.60 x 80 = 48. That's my kind of math!
@rhondamolix-bailey97439 жыл бұрын
+Jose Encarnacion Mathematics has it's own language and actually there are words in mathematics that have multiple meanings, like "base" and different meanings than in everyday language, like "table." If you were frustrated with compliment, imagine having come from your English class where you just learned that the work complement had a totally different definition and add on top of that, that English is your second language. If you have school aged children, please help them to learn the language of mathematics because it is the language of science, which is the language of the universe. The entire World uses one system of units and that does not include feet, inches, gallons, pints. Check out I.S.U.International System of Units - Wikipedia, the free . Helping your kids to learn mathematics vocabulary can be a lot of fun, i.e., have a geometry scavenger hunt in the house, identifying the angles and polygons that they need to learn. Research the mathematicians who actually came up with the language. Make the mathematics come alive. Here is a website that I was Senior Consultant on--mathematics is not stagnant. www.mathcantakeyouplaces.org What the videos and then do the lessons, if you don't have kids, please pass this along.
@15LaDell9 жыл бұрын
it's really sad that kids are lacking in basic knowledge because they aren't efficient with learning lessons. they dong consider the children who learn differently like visual learners who can't just learn mental math right off the bat. this is a nicely drawn out, logical and simple way for everyone to understand.

to understand the concept foundation should be stronger.... then they can learn shortcuts.... this is a trick...not a method... which is universally applied to all numbers

The best way to practice your complements is by paying cash and watching your change. For many years in college I had little money and so I would carefully calculate how much change I would get back before they would give it to me. Eventually I was right to the penny every time, and never forgot it. Therefore I know all this complement stuff instantly.

With this change of kids at home and doing NTI I noticed I was literally very bad at math and my son who's in 4th grade needed help. My mind is totally blown. I can not believe how awesome this is. Just the word “math” gives me mega anxiety. I’ve been consistently terrible adding. I freaking love this! Ah man, I could have... I returned to college during this Covid19. It’s been 30 yrs since agonizing in math. Of course I need to take math (failed algebra 3 time, passed the 4th time). Math so embarrassing and awful. This new method, which I’m super fast at, is a blessing for me. Thank you. Also, I worked pharmacy 34 years. Counted pills all day long. All we do is count. The count we started on morphine, how many dispensed, what’s the remainder? It Was imperative I had a calculator (count can almost never be wrong or your toast). Wow. No words.

This is how I do it. I also used the joints on my fingers to add up when I was a kid so I could add up numbers up to 30 instead of just 10 . I also got into the habit of when adding a number say 7 just add 10 and then take away 3 which is the difference between 7 and 10. Plus I learned all complementary numbers up to a hundred. This all started from counting on fingers. Do teachers encourage kids to do this at beginning school these days? There should be no calculators in elementary and junior schools. Regarding education there are too many people who say they don't need to learn to do something themselves because they can either Google it or get somebody else to do it for them. An all round education is being dropped, instead you now have to pass certain tests.
