You always need to remember that Hannibal is not always an ethical psychiatrist. Sometimes he likes to play with people as if they are toys. He winds them up and then he lets them go to see how they would react.

Perfectly put. He's manipulative & exploitative. He manipulates & exploits Will because he is looking to connect with his own kind and sees something in Will he can warp: to make him the same as he is.

You should do the episode from season two where Hannibal’s therapist realizes that he’s a killer and confronts him. It is one of my favorite scenes from a TV series of all time. Mikkelsen‘s performance is so intimidating and the way it is filmed makes it feel like the world is closing in on her.

Huzzah! More Hannibal! :D Hannibal casually fiddling with Will's things is a big hint of things to come. Also Hannibal continues to try and become friends with Will instead of his psychiatrist. Like, he goes to Will's house to feed his dogs... :S Abigail being released is hard, since she lost both her parents (one killed the other), and her house, so she doesn't really have a place to go to. I feel Jack is being pretty harsh to those kids. Like, they were threatened, and not an abstract threat either, they witnessed the death of one the other boys who didn't want to go through with it, and that's not even looking at the other things going on. I like Hannibal, he is a terrible person, but watching him plot and execute his plans is very cool. :)

I’m so glad you’re continuing with Hannibal! It’s one of my favorite shows, and I think there’s so much to discuss as the show goes on. This episode has a strong theme of chosen family, which is a very queer narrative from a queer showrunner, and one that will continue throughout the series. It’s also full of Hannibal both being a good psychiatrist and a great manipulator. I think he genuinely believes he is helping both Abigail and Will, and as the show goes on, it’s fascinating to see what Hannibal thinks constitutes “help.” Thanks so much for reacting, and looking forward to more!

Re: throat scars Over the past 15yrs or so, I’ve had two surgeries on my cervical spine, both went in through the front of the throat. My scar is more to the front than hers, but is also more red and eye catching. I’ve had maybe two people comment on it. And both of them asked out of concern for me, not accusatorially. Granted, i have no trauma attached to the would, but I’m one data point suggesting that there isn’t a lot of stigma towards that kind of thing. Though also, I present as a larger bald-headed man with visible arm tattoos. She’s an attractive 20-something woman. The standards are different.
@AnnekeOosterink2 жыл бұрын
I would also argue that because of Freddie Lounds, people know who she is, and at least some people are going to remember her as that one girl who was maybe an accessory to her father's murdering and cannibalism. So the scar is probably going to make her more recognizable. (also, she's supposed to be 17 here)

I am so happy you're revisiting Hannibal! It's my favourite show, and several themes have helped me actualise things about my trauma that I could then take to my therapist (she loves the show too!). I can't remember if you touched on it last time, but I'd love for you to discuss the nature of Will's "empathy". The closest I have come to describing it would be akin to Mirror Empathy.

Agree. Especially since recent psych research found teen brain's do not mature re impulse control, decision making & consequence until age 25. So while children might know right from wrong , their brain development plays a part & we know have more knowledge on that.

Hannibal (especially Mads Mikkelsen's version) is my favorite TV show character. Along with Dexter Morgan. Nice choices, I know ;) Plus you need to remember, that Hannibal is not really a... 'conventional' doctor. If a patient comes to him telling, they have thoughts about murdering someone, he won't try to analyze why in order to prevent them from hurting someone. He will analyze it in order to push them into doing that thing. Plus sometimes his diagnoses aren't exactly right, but with that he can manipulate people into something. He's an interesting character, I hope you'll watch the whole show, because it's truly amazing. Especially second season is just... I won't spoil anything of course, but it's one of the best stories in the history of TV, in my opinion.

I'm glad you finally did another episode of Hannibal. Please do more because what we really want you to react to is the later episodes that have more therapy session scenes between Hannibal and Will. This show really stands out for being amazing. It was an under rated gem that does have a fanbase. The reason that this show is so unique for you to react to is because it is the only exception where the psychiatrist is a master manipulator and is INTENTIONALLY making his patients worse for his own amusement. It's pretty obvious that he is clearly violating his hypocratic oath and is an extremely unethical psychiatrist. What makes it so amazing is that he is an excellent psychiatrist choosing to be this way. He is well aware that he is psychopath but he embraces it because he has a God complex and he does everything that suits his interests and does things to keep himself entertained. Hannibal in this series is played as if the devil was just a regular human that happens to be extremely intelligent and extremely dangerous. I highly suggest you watch the entire series as it is a masterpiece! Please do more episodes! Thank you.

Hey Elliott! Recently I’ve been loving a Netflix show called Mr. robot, and I recommend it as a show that you might like to watch and also analyze on your channel, as it deals with a lot of the psychology of the main character whose name is also Elliot, fun fact. I doubt you could watch just one episode to get a proper good look of this show and the masterpiece that is Elliot Alderson, since major parts of his background and nature aren’t unraveled until season 2-4. Hope you consider it

I’m not blaming the medical community for anything but I feel like being prescribed Ritalin in 1st grade and eventually taking up to 30mg today before I was taken off the medication due to heart complications had an immense impact on the rest of my life, I’ve always been incredibly thin (20yr old Male 5’10 120 lbs) it conditioned my brain for immediate reward and I feel contributed to my drug addiction I’ve been struggling with for over 5 years and ultimately made my ADHD more difficult to treat down the road.

I really liked what you said about taking breaks from your therapy sessions to try things out on your own. That's not something that's been mentioned to me before but something I have loosely thought about when I am told that in order for therapy to be effective I need to go 2 to 4 times a month... It feels more episodic than letting me have some time to try some of the techniques I learned and come back to tell them how it went after enough time to try them out? I always love when you cover Hannibal also. This was such a nice treat during exams right now.

If you ever willing to come back to it again, a great episode featuring mental disorders is 1x10. The episode is titled Buffet Froid and there is a great conversation about the ordeals of the diagnosis process, the management of expectations, the fear around mental illnesses, etc. It's not my fav episode (I prefere the next (queerer) seasons), but your take on it could be so enlightening! I still wait for the episode or the clip(s) when Hannibal himself talk to his psychotherapist. That would be interesting analyze to see... Hannibal knows that therapist are supposed to have their own therapy. I don't remember much from this series because it was too loud and on your face for someone who has sensory issues - but I remember Hannibal going to therapy and some reason wanting the specific therapist. Btw... I don't mind blood or violence, this series is REALLY LOUD and to this day I have no idea how people watch this without suffocating from all the sensory stuff the series like to use. It's like all the small horror movie noises and other effects would have turn to 100.

Oeuf is a low point episode for this show. It's not that the episode is bad, but from episode 5 until about the end of season 2, pretty much each episode is better than the one before it. I don't know how to rate it from a psychiatric standpoint, but some very interesting things start happening through this season. Bryan Fuller had seen the final results of the first four episodes, and he realized that he had a much better show on his hands than what he was making. He ended up throwing out a number of scripts to upgrade the quality of the writing to the quality of the production and performances.

Your early point about Will separating feeling guilty and being guilty, isn't that also what a guilty person would say to feign innocence, ie. 'a non-denial denial?' For example, someone who committed murder is asked whether they killed the victim. Their response is something like, "Why would I do that?," instead of "No!" or "I didn't kill him/her!" How would you delineate feigned innocence from real innocence and curiosity/uncertainty, especially if you're working from self report?
