Important things from the book that didn't make it into the movie, James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew used to be best mates at school and due to Lupin's werewolf condition the others decided to become animagus to be able to stay with him during the full moons. Thus, they gave each other nicknames according to their animal forms, James being Prongs (transformed to a stag), Sirius Padfoot, Peter Wormtail and Remus Moony. So actually they are the ones who created the marauders' map during their school years, the marauders being the name of they friend's group

And why Harry's patronus was a stag--just like his father. If I recall correctly, book Dumbledore says to him later that James was there that night (metaphorically). Also, the Whomping Willow was planted when they were kids, to protect the entrance to the tunnel to the Shrieking Shack, created especially for Lupin as a child. It was said to be haunted because people would hear his howls when he would go there during the full moons.

The fact they became Animagus basically protected them from being bitten, since a werewolf's bite is only dangerous to humans (since they are the werewolf's prey) and, by being Animagi, they were able to stay with Remus. Peter's rat form allowed him to immobilize the Whomping Willow so he, James and Sirius could meet Remus at the Shrieking Shack, while James and Sirius' respective stag and dog forms allowed them to better control Remus' rampages.

Im so glad you picked up on the depth behind Hermione saying "no one is coming" to Harry. I always cry at that scene because Harry looked so happy and full of hope waiting there believing his dad was coming to save him and you briefly see his expression turn to one of sadness just before he runs to the edge of the lake where it quickly turns into one of bravery. The concept of dementors and patronums is beautiful. Dementors are depression and the patronum spell is an excellent way of reminding us that we can "save" ourselves, if not through self love, then through the memories of love that others have for you. The light pulsating almost looks like hes exhaling it. Not to mention the gorgeous roaring of the music.
@mentallygonereacts2 ай бұрын
That scene is so emotional and pivotal. Breathtaking to watch. It really does highlight themes of mental health and depression, and how sometimes we stand by and watch ourselves suffer, waiting for someone to save us because we haven’t yet realized our own potential in saving ourselves. We can only see ourselves suffering, the same way Harry only saw himself dying as the dementors were sucking the soul from him. But with a little perspective, an awakening, we understand that we are not only the self that’s experiencing the pain, but the self that is observing the entire thing unravel as well. I love to think that although his father didn’t quite literally step in and cast the Patronus charm; in those last moments when Harry finally steps forward compelled to save himself, part of it could be because a piece of his father’s spirit resides within him. The urge to save him, the Patronus being a Stag (his father’s animagus), could show that indirectly/through Harry, his father does save him, but Harry has to be the one to channel it. I believe that it’s exactly like you said, that through the memories of love that others have for you, light can take form. It’s the love that Harry’s mother has that saved him from Voldemort, and the love his father has that contributes to saving him from the dementors. And it’s so filled with grief, and beauty. It’s why this franchise and these movies are very impactful. My eyes also well up for Harry every time he is forced to face pain and with every loss he’s had to undergo. Thank you for your comment, it was so beautifully written and added some perspective that we’ll talk more about in our last reaction! ✨ - Gabi

A small clarification: when Lupin transforms into a werewolf, Sirius asks him: "You didn't take your potion tonight?" This is explained in the book: avoiding the transformation is impossible, but the potion helps Lupin keep his mind in the wolf form, so he wouldn't hurt anyone or worse. And it has to be taken every evening for two weeks before the transformation: even if one day is skipped, it won't work. (There's a little inconsistency here as well: in the book, Lupin mentions that this potion was a recent invention, and Sirius probably didn't know about its existence)

Patronus's and animagus are usually the same animal. However your patronus can change if you are deeply affected by an emotion. This happens to Draco's cousin (not in the films). It is a particularly difficult magic to become an animagus. Prongs (James Potter) is the 4th Marauder and is a stag! The whomping willow was deliberately planted when Lupin was a pupil. This was to protect students from entering the passageway and the haunted shrieking shack rumour was spread by Dumbledore (the sounds were Lupin as a werewolf). Lupin was using the map so knew where Harry was (and Pettigrew) but left it open when he went to the shack, so Snape saw it too. Hermione is bad at Trawleney's class because she can't learn it in books. She gives up that class and muggle studies, so doesn't need the time turner from now on. Don't worry about Harry being the 3rd wheel: all progresses next film!

In Matilda, the actress played the abusive and cruel principal, Trunchbull.

In many interviews JK Rowling has explained that what inspired her creation of Dementors for her Harry Potter books was her own severely deep depression that she had suffered for a while after she divorced her abusive husband and became a single mother on welfare. One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag. Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle. 🌜🌕🌛🐺🐶🦌🐀🪄🌳🏚
@mgp12036 ай бұрын
This film unfortunately fails to mention the Marauders were James (Harry's dad), Remus (Professor Lupin), Sirius and Peter Pettigrew. They were best friends growing up and they created the map. James, Sirius and Peter made themselves animagus so that Remus wouldn't be or feel alone as a werewolf. The director, Alfonso Cuaron, is a world renowned director and his sauce really shows in this film. However book fans feel about the left-out information from the books and the tonal shift from the first two movies, this film definitely had style. As a faithful adaptation, the first two are much better. As a standalone film, this one definitely outshines the rest imo. It just has so much style.

Just watching a bit more of your discussion, and Gabriella thinking of Lupus instead of Lupin is perfect. Lupus is Latin for wolf, and Lupin is from Latin Lupinus, "of the wolf." Lupin's first name, Remus, is a reference to Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, who were nursed by a she-wolf. Also, I can totally see the rabbit and black panther! You're right that the patronus manifests as a sort of spirit animal. Everyone has a patronus if they're able to cast the spell. Harry's patronus is the same as his father's--a stag. I think when a wizard becomes an animagus (an extremely advanced form of magic), they don't choose the animal. They take the form of the animal that best represents them, so it's like their spirit animal, as well. I do hope you both read the books. The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Deathly Hallows (#7) rival each other as my favorite. #3 is so good because for the first time you start getting a strong sense of who Harry's parents were, and how it all contributed to events in Harry's life. Each succeeding book reveals more of the mystery of the past.

58:05 Here are the the differences between crows & ravens. Ravens differ from crows in appearance by their larger bill, tail shape, flight pattern and by their large size. Ravens are as big as Red-tailed Hawks, and crows are about the size of pigeons.
@AdamNisbett6 ай бұрын
Ravens are definitely larger than crows and comparable to Hawks (aka Buzzards if not in America) in size, yes, but Crows vary a good bit in size and a number of them are still notably bigger than pigeons.

You guys instantly became my one if the favourite reactors. I just wanted to say can you guys also react to kdramas??? Recommendations My Perfect Stranger Pyramid Game Revenge of others I specially recommend these dramas because these need some brainwork and I love how you notice even single details.
@mentallygonereacts13 күн бұрын
The Perfect Stranger is one that's been on our list! That one would probably be our first, but I'm going to add all of these. Honestly, the brainwork is what really makes these even more fun for us. We love when details get pointed out that we would never even think of or notice, can't wait to hear your thoughts too! - Gabi

Caley, until this very moment I didn't know that you grew up in Brazil (i'm brazilian). That's so cool. And yes, i remember America very well: "boi bandido" was almost a mythic creature, and novela was a PHENOMENON in terms of storytelling gender on brazilian TV - specially in the 90s and the 2000s. Great reaction, guys! This movie is probably my favorite as well - the tone keeps getting darker and darker in each movie. Um abraço do Brasil, amigos!

Why do people ruin shit...why is it necessary to say that actors have died for people have never watched the series. I hate people
@mentallygonereacts13 күн бұрын
I hope you don’t mean that we’ve ruined it for others by sharing it in the video, because that truly was never our intention. We just wanted to address the comments that were being left by others and pay an homage to the actors as we watched because after finding it out for ourselves, it felt like the most appropriate thing to do. Almost no comment goes unread (really NO comment goes unread), so unfortunately there are times details are shared, but then luckily in most cases it’ll be that the details or “spoilers” were shared after we already got to experience it for ourselves depending on when we read it. It happens, we know it isn’t malicious. People are just excited and passionate, and want to share their emotions. We can’t fault anyone. If anything, I think knowing the actors passed away enhanced the experience for us in a way. When there was loss, we felt a layer and weight of there being a real loss too. And it made us appreciate the work and the depth of each character even more

There are so much of those symbolics and details in the books, I think you would love to read them.
@Always-fd7pk6 ай бұрын
I just LOVE how deeply you discuss the story's themes and archetypes. Agrippa even gets a mention in the books, btw😉 In light of Miriam Margolyes' (Prof. Sprout) recent, rather ignorant remarks about adult HP-fans (Something like "It's clearly for children and they should be over it by now, however they still cling to it"), I want to emphasize that Harry Potter is NOT, by any means, some lighthearted and lowbrow piece of kiddie pop culture. Not only does it deal with very dark and existential themes, Rowling also managed to include the essence of hundreds of years of philosophy, mythology, religion, literary tradition, British folklore and the occult, especially Alchemy. The shere amount of references and Rowling's clever and imaginative way of weaving them into the books, both on the intradiagetic narrative level and on a meta-level, are just incredible. There are tons of academic literature about the deeper aspects of Harry Potter, something that Ms. Margolyes might want to take into consideration. And clearly she doesn't understand the intense emotional impact those books - and stories on general - can have on a person.

And despite what a lot of people say, I prefer the new Dumbledore. This Dumbledore seems more wise, more joyous and thoughtful, more entertaining and humorous, more spry and cheerful, and more... stable - that is to say, he seems to really have his tihS together. His mental faculties, I should say.
@faforrer6 ай бұрын
Well, i like the new Dumbledore, too, but he's defently not more joyous and humorous and defently not more stable... ("Did you put your name into the Goblet of Fire, Harry?" he asked calmly.) xD

Michael Gambon sure nailed the weird side of Dumbledore. More in line with Book version of Dumbledore but Richard Harris nailed the kind old man for the first 2 movies.

This is my favorite from the entire series easily. Not to say that the others are bad, its just that I like this one particularly a lot more than the others. - The time-travel aspect by itself is awesome but I love the themes of depression/trauma, isolation, familial ties, and fear. - The performances from the best British actors who were alive from Michael Gambon(rip), Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman(rip), David Thewlis, Emma Thomas, etc. Too many to name. - The art direction, sets, and mood which I think are the best in the series because of how casual and lived-in everything feels. Nobody is gazing at magic stuff and always starry-eyed. These people are just livig their lives and we are left to wonder. - The score by John Williams(last one by him in the series). Its so good. I love the medieval tone that this one has compared to the first two by him which have a more straightforward children's fantasy tone, which is still really good cuz John Williams. - Cinematography by Michael Seresin who worked on Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes which are insanely well shot and good looking films. I love the motif of time and mirrors in the movie. There are so many cool shots in this movie with the most infamous being the boggart closet mirror shot. - And of course direction by Alfonso Cuaron who directed Gravity, Children of Men, etc. He's so masterful at his craft and I love how the camera is always moving in his movies. This movie in particular benefits from it since it creates a sense of tension the entire time.

There should have been more emphasis on animagus. I'm glad you noticed that in Professor McGonagall. There's a whole rule about animagus, it's an advanced magic, not everyone can do it, you need to register to be an animagus, and there are only countable numbers of animagus out there- "legally". Sirius is not.

I saw this comment online, regarding why Sirius growled at Harry in the park. Sirius Black first growled at Harry at the park because he was trying to scare him into accidentally summoning the Knight Bus. This was done to ensure Harry’s safety from the dementors that were following him.

This is my simple analogy: Dementor characteristics: Everything frrezes on contact - season of death - Winter ❄️ Sucking souls - Depression, PTSD, and Anxiety Black cloak - veil between the Living and the Dead. When the body dies, the body gets COLD, icy cold. Capabilities: Takes away your Light - Power of oneself. Removes your conforming zone completely like a blanket removed from you in a situation that is cold and being alone.

Tech tip for the camera recording timer. You could record your footage directly to the computer without relying on the internal recording of the camera. Here's how: Get a CamLink (or a similar capture card/ converter) and a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable. Use these to connect your Sony a7iii to your PC. Then you can simply use OBS to record your session, which will both get your footage directly to your PC hard drive, AND bypass the camera's internal limit when recording to SD-cards.
