People who pay attention can vote for the better choice. Boycotting a corporation that owns many "different" companies is much more challenging. Keep all of that in mind before you just default to repeating the deliberate "they're all the same" nonsense.

Even this doesn't always help. It's called a punycode attack. It's a webaddress changing one character to another identically looking one from another alphabet. Indistinguishable to the naked eye. The only safeguard I know is Firefox with forced display of punycode addresses in the urlbar (it's an about:config setting). The sad thing about stuff like this is, normal people without knowledge have no means to defend against stuff like this. What still helps in A LOT of situations, use common sense.

I see a lot of comments saying it's a problem with the young being more tech-savvy than the old, or that you should (or should not) use a preinstalled store - and the video gives into that a little. But I'm pretty sure it's nothing related, and much more serious. Third-party stores are certainly not free from this kind of malware, and youre actually MORE liable to download some crap if you live in the "de-googled" ecosystem, because you often end up trying to run stuff without GMS or a dedicated store, or without a proper SELinux or SDK, because, like everyone else, you are somewhat stuck with banking apps for instance. My point is: we live in such a world, where a couple of companies have such immense power over everyday life that you're very much bound to make a bad choice at some point, and i feel the video brushes over it with a lot of bad faith. If you're just a run of the mill person running your play store on a recent phone, you've got quite a lot of safety measures implemented actually (knox is one of them, but apps on the play store are actually checked by paid people) god forbid I mention iOS - the phone is updated with the latest security patches, more and more toggles are needed for you to do a mistake... The phone will run like crap (or will, eventually) because it's full to the brim with bloatware, but here you go. Now compare this to someone running, say, Lineage without GAPPS, on a phone that's not so young, as is usually the case, because firmwares take time to release - if they ever do. You might miss a lot of security patches. You're stuck with a variety of open stores, which rely on volunteers to review the apps, which is in itself a huge liability, as demonstrated by the xz-utils meltdown. So, yeah, you might be less likely to click on any shady link than your average Joe, but I wouldn't say you're more protected by default, especially when trying to run some code somebody online wrote arguably to patch an app to work without GMS, or if you rooted your phone - not mentioning we all pretend to ignore that the ROMS distributed on XDA or elsewhere might be some dangerous horsecrap in and of themselves. In summary we're all victims of the state of affairs: normies might fall into social engineering traps because that's actually the vast majority of the scams going on today (on instagram, telegram and whatnot) because their confidence is way too high, but also because they feel like they don't have a choice to download on - say, rustore. But the same goes for "us": because we try to escape an all-controlling mob of big companies, we end up screwed by people who try to take advantage of the ecosystem trying to survive behind the big stores. I feel like the video fails to show that this piece of malware might just as well be aimed at the tech-savvy.

Everywhere, from the Microsoft, Apple and Google walled gardens and their app stores to the depths of custom firmware and software piracy, it's all about trust. LineageOS and microG are not small names in the Android modding community. There's not a single person unlocking their bootloaders who doesn't know about them. In these massive projects the maintainers check every commit to ensure things remain safe. Do you trust those people? Having participated in LineageOS development and talked to them myself, I do. If you don't trust them and would rather trust megacorporations that are known for antagonizing and spying on its users as part of its business strategy, that's fine by me. I could also name more than a few big names in piracy that are trustworthy, but that'd get my comment removed by big G.

Everywhere, from the Microsoft, Apple and Google ecosystems to the depths of custom firmware and piracy are about trust. LineageOS and microG are not small names in the Android community. I put my trust in them because I had a chance to engage with the project maintainers a couple years ago, and those interactions were positive. Lagging behind in security patches is unfortunate, but it only happens because the drivers tied to those security patches are proprietary, and _can't_ be updated by anyone other than the manufacturers, who have abandoned those devices long ago. The LineageOS developers are not to blame for this state of affairs. Unlike Microsoft, Google and their partners, who are not shy about showing off their scummy practices to anyone observant enough, and publicly taking measures, in broad daylight, that feel explicitly designed to antagonize their userbase. But I'm not an idiot. I'd still rather download apps from their official sources instead of random third-party mirrors and check the EXE/APK certificates to make extra sure they're the real thing. I'll just do it on my own terms, with opensource frontend apps that reverse-engineered the protocol to fetch from the official servers. And yet, when Google Ads is full of scams pretending to be part of whatever website you're visiting, and my official bank emails ask me to send in my SSN and passwords, who's to blame for falling for scams when official interactions are just as hackery? And even if you don't fall for a scam and get your data stolen, your data gets stolen anyway by people breaching into the corporations' databases directly. They made themselves inescapable if you wanna be a part of society, and this is the result. Pd: I can also mention more than a few big names in piracy that I trust. People who develop open-source cracks and mods that I personally checked the sourcecode of, compiled myself and then compared against the prebuilt binaries they released, and found to be 100% clean. But shouting them out by name would get my comment deleted by big G.

Hard disagree. Just because you're running a custom rom doesn't mean you're downloading/installing random stuff from shady websites, something which I'd argue normies do more commonly. From my perspective, it's LESS common for a Lineage user to do that sort of thing. Even if you distrust F-droid, you can always get apps directly from the devs through Obtanium or similar methods, and then do the verification yourself. As for the xz issue, it's funny that you mention it because literally nothing happened. Why? precisely because someone noticed something was off before anything bad happened at all lol. This comment feels like fearmongering tbh, even if that wasn't your intention.

Keep in mind that Android malware cannot access just any file on your device unless it’s rooted. The most it can do-based on the permissions you’ve granted-is access general user data, such as files stored in shared locations. For example, this might include pictures, downloaded documents, or files on external storage like SD cards. While that’s still concerning, it’s not as critical as something like stealing a token for a banking app. If your device isn’t rooted, it’s generally more secure because malware can’t access the internal storage of other apps. On Android, each app has its own isolated storage, and other apps can’t access it. If you have you break this.

itd be extra smart if they had an accessibility service, but would probably throw people off who actually read permission requests, because with the right accessibility permission they could also interact with the device as if the user is actively touching the screen, i.e they could launch a foreground overlay that blacks out the screen (hoping the user won't lock rhe screen) and then behind the overlay try to access certain information that doesn't yk require authentication so like opening text messages f.e or opening the targets gmail app and then sending password reset requests

So are they like talking about a landline or do they just not consider their personal information important? No contacts, no bank account, no 2fa? That begs the question of why they even own a phone in the first place.
@kaydog890
@kaydog890 29 күн бұрын
@Johnnyvtg I went back to a "dumb" phone for months. I only went back because I needed Maps for my job. Well, I needed GPS and having a Garmin mounted in my car would just ask for it to get broken into. If anyone hacked my current phone, the most they'd get is some contacts and the saved passwords for sites idc about. No 2fa. No emails. No banking. You clearly have a Google account so you mustnt care about your data, either. Every big corp is tracking us, your government and foreign ones also. Who cares if you've got nothing to hide. Thankfully I'm running CommonSense 2025 so won't get hacked; it's the best antivirus around.

About permissions: Russians are split on those who hate any extra permission for a new app and who turn on everything on just to make an app working.... Second ones are the most and that's a huge problem. The just don't care/are too much trustful/stupid etc. I'm not. We have Telegram clones with a lot of extra functions but those clones don't look like Telegram at all. And they're still risky in use so they're not popular. We have Telegram channels with cracked apps, mostly with cutted ads. Russians don't ask how much to pay for an app, they ask how to get it. And where. 50 years ago russians used to listen BBC on shortwave radio, make tape copies of Beatles albums and a lot of local underground musicians, make typewriter copies of translated foreign literature. Now we exchange VPN apps, read news from "foreign agencies". We had an app for watching movies online from torrents long before Netflix. Getting information here looks like it's Cuba...

I'll just be the one to say it: anyone who installs ANY social media app on their smartphone is a fool and I have zero sympathy for you. With how embedded our phones are into our lives now it is the height of stupidity to willingly give big tech companies so many open doors into your life. Anyone remember "FB is listening to us"? But people are more than happy to just hand over their freedom for a little bit of convenience, and often just the PERECEPTION of convenience. And it's all convenient until something goes wrong and it isn't convenient.

a while back, i hit a point where i felt like everything was out of my control. i kept wondering why other people seemed to get what they wanted while i was stuck in the same place. then i came across this book called Vibrations of Manifestation by Alex Lane. i wasn’t expecting much, but the way it explains the connection between your energy and the life you create? it blew my mind. it’s not just a book, it’s like a blueprint for turning your life around.
