My second foray into Final Fantasy XIV's Mentor Roulette lead me to some deep, dark, disgusting places. How many low level dungeons will it take before I lose my mind? Only one way to find out!

Since you asked, the reason DPS are so often late to Ready Up is because DPS Privilege is getting to do other things (eg laundry) while your queues don't pop.

My favorite pass time, queing duty and joining a 7-20 min duty in progress just to find out what happened. (Sadly most of the time its just "player afk")

if i remember correctly, when you queue into mentor roulette, its turned on automatically, cider has just gotten unlucky so far. (though i suppose unlucky is relative in this case)

i had one of those 25min in prog runs in Snowcloak the other day, it was a tankfill. It was a triple french only party that didnt speak english at all, the blm spammed Fire III on aoe and singletarget and the healer was a cure bot, I finished it, but it wasnt pleasant

I've finished my 2000 mentor runs a few weeks ago. My advice is to switch jobs every so often to not get bored and as someone else said "Join party in progress" will give you some interesting stuff. You also tend to get the most complex stuff when queuing as DPS.

Last time I ran Aurum Vale as a healer, I had a tank who didn't know the strats (cos they were new) but they DID know how to Holmgang perfectly to avoid death and give me enough time to heal him. God bless that sprout

Addendum: Wish the DRK would remember more mit than TBN exists. At this point, I breath a happy sigh when a tank pops rampart on a trash pull. Practically squee when they remember arm's length has a slow effect. This is the dichotomy of healer: Life conspires to make you salty, but that makes the little things sweeter by contrast.

@@spizzz7221 Probably because on mouse and keyboard you have to go out of your way to walk (I think it's the / key) rather than it being how hard you push the left stick on controller, which is an easier toggle, and so you really only see it on PC when people are rping, or making a video.

In my experience Healers get a ton of dungeons, while DPS get somewhat more variety, but half your duties are guildhests from people farming comms

Watching these has really brought me peace with my level of gameplay. Too often you see guides and content and posts that are crafted to Instagram levels of perfection and they leave out all the ugly stuff. Clipping ogcds, messing up mechanics, causing wipes. Sometimes I forget to keep my gcd rolling. I tried to wall to wall pull in Tower of Zot the other day and got educated by the Hypertuned. Wipe felt awful and the mentor in the group just kept making emoticons in chat and being very passive aggressive. Content like this helps dispel the mythical perfection that a lot of people in the community pretend to have attained and I appreciate you giving us a realistic view into what it’s really like instead of curating your content to the same level of impossibly perfect clips.

I imagine the reason why ShB dungeons are so rare is cause even after 5 years. The player saturation for that content is still relatively low compared to the saturation for ARR - HW - SB. There are just so many more low tier dungeons being played by newer players or players that still have sprout. The probability is simply heavily weighted towards ARR & HW the most.

ARR have literally more dungeons than SB, ShB and EW combined. Not only you have more dungeons in leveling range (being 50 levels instead of 10),but also during ARR there was 3 new level cap dungeons per patch instead of the current one.

@@NibelungJ The 50 level gap trhing isnt super relevant as they aren't every other level like expansion content; First 3 are level 16, and then a new one every *fourth* level instead. There's about double the ARR dungeon count vs. Stormblood, but 3 of those dungeons dont count as theyre MSQ -- No wait, we're down to 2. So 29 vs. 16 - Interestingly, ShB's 13 means there is *exactly* as many ARR dungeons as there are SB + ShB

I once had to explain how Healers in the The Great Hunt (Extreme) were not needed and that we needed as much DPS as possible. We kept wiping for an hour cause you can't die more than three times. Eventually the vote abandon went thru. Worst Mentor Roulette Ever!

Duty Finder is going to give you a healer regardless, and being able to Esuna the stacking dots in the later phase can actually be pretty helpful.

By coincidence, I also had a tank in Aurum Vale using every mitigation ability on cooldown regardless of the situation. Except they also used their enmity ability every time, switching it on and off each time they used a mitigation. And they also used limit break 1 every time it generated.

Part of that probably has to do with the number of sprouts who actually make it to Heavensward. I'd wager that a good 70% of Cider's dungeon runs are going to be ARR.

Go DPS. If you want a challenge/less 'dungeons' go DPS. Bonus points for DNC/RDM/MCH/SMN or RPR as they tend to either murder panda anyting low level, offer group utility that can aid babies through their stuff or have raise. You will get far more variety if you qo as dps. Also if you were wondering, tanks tend to get more trials.

@@kevingriffith6011 in my over 1700 mentor roulette experience, they take less than 5 mins per dps queue, many instant (i've kept track of everything i've done as far as instance, cleared, new people, time i sat in queue). DPS is actually not long at all. Tank (even though it says 'in need' all the time, often is about the same as dps...healer is almost always instant)

The fun thing about mentor, never know what you're gonna get. My first one today (tuesday morning) was Lunar Subterrane. The most recently added dungeon. It went as smooth as any usual expert at this point. Next was Praetorium. Best of luck to all in the slog.

@10:25 I will say, if one doesn't like that the tank is pulling slowly, they surprisingly included a feature in Final Fantasy XIV called Chat. One can press keys to send messages comprised of typographical characters, typically from a common language understood by everyone present. Upon viewing those typographical characters, one can discern meaning from the combinations of them which form Words and Language. Using said communication, one could even discuss feeling like the group can pull more. Instead of being an ahole Dancer who pulls ahead and gets commended rather than kicked for being an impatient and whiny baby. As a mentor, I feel it's better to encourage groups to talk about more pulls rather than entitled brats pulling ahead. If the Dancer does not like it, perhaps they should've queued as the tank instead. But, much to the surprise of everyone, I find that if you just type a few short messages utilizing that mysterious Chat feature, most problems fix themselves via communication and mutual understanding. And for a video on Mentor Roulette, I might encourage one to set an example of communicating as a group rather than commending a quiet pulling baby tantrum.

The trinity of roles tend to have different general experiences in Mentor Roulette. Tanks probably get Extremes the most frequently, healers get saddled with dungeons more often and dps tend to get guildhests. Mentor roulette also lets dps pretend to have tank/healer queues! It's close to instant a lot of the time, thanks to it being able to fling you into literally anything other than Savage, Coil and current Extremes.

Haukke hard, the mechanic is it does the add's remaining healthbar when the boss hits a certain % hp remaining, the summoning of the add is also based on the bosses health. you can look up the numbers but its summon at [number]% hp and at [number]% eat their health to do as damage

my guess for the heavy lean into ARR and HW and almost nothing after would be that those expansions have more dungeons than there are solo ways to play them. Duty Support and Command Missions only handle a few of them, whereas eventually trusts handle almost everything worth doing in ShB.

I figure it's probably because the vast majority of sprouts probably quit midway into heavensward. Not due to quality of content, but more just... there being a *lot* of content and not everyone is up to that commitment. Other games look interesting and pull them away, you know?

Storm Blood was the peak of raid and class design imo. All the raids that cameout were unique and challenging. It was just banger raid after banger raid. Not to mention UCOB came out during SB too. One of the best ultimates imo. Still super fun even after being out scaled severely. SB also hit that really nice balance of accessible class design while still having depth and fun optimization that you could do. If you were a story person SB kind of sucked but as a raider, you were eating good with no crumbs left.

Stone Vigil HM Cannons aren't hard to explain. 1 to kill, don't fire when boss shields and glows red for a few seconds. 2 to stun boss room AOE. And I quite enjoy the last boss as well, it's basically the game's tutorial for un-telegraphed AOEs. That's all the bosses do, aim animations at random players and go. I think the Infirmity is less about actually making the encounter deadly and more of a "You Messed Up" sticker, before Vuln stacks became the norm.
