Another glorious week of Mentor Roulettes in Final Fantasy XIV! How many dungeons will I get dragged into this time? Will we finally see our first EX Trial? Who knows! But what I do know is that there sure are a lot of bosses in this game with mechanics that I don't remember.

17:00 Reaper is alternating Gibbet and Gallows, which is CORRECT, the buffs replace each other. The Bard just... isn't using songs, for some reason.

which is wild as fuck, considering by level 80 they have 100% uptime on songs in fights so they have no reason to let their songs drop off. In Dawntrail there's even LESS reason, because now they can keep their songs going even between pulls! (they no longer need a target to song)

@@ChubbyIceCube it's added in post. Doing these kind of sound mods is a pain in the rear, and ACT triggers for sounds can be inconsistent or delayed.

16:50 Section with the Reaper buffs. Gallows and gibbet are positional moves that use 50 meter, each one gives an enhanced version of the opposite one that you're supposed to alternate between. If they do stay active for awhile but alternate, it's fine considering you need to build meter. But if only one ever shows, they're not alternating them like they should

I haven't done a lot of Frontline (just enough to get an achievement which awarded some boots I wanted for a glam), but the level of "why are we attacking Red when Blue is way ahead on points!?" instantly reminded me why I haven't gone back there since.

Hey Cider, here's what happened with Karlabos in Sastasha Hard: his attack Tail Screw reduces HP to single digits, and if the target also has the DoT debuff he applies beforehand, they'll die. So all you have to do is Esuna the Tail Screw target and you're golden!

either esuna or excog, but yeah tail screw on a dotted target can get spicy unless the debuff timing is off - you may as well have up to three seconds to heal them before the dot murders them!

You'll want to esuna all the debuffs immediately anyway as it heavily slows attacks and heals Also the attacks that apply the debuffs are in an aoe targeted on players, so spreading out helps out a lot! Basically the fight becomes a very quick target dummy if people stay in a spread formation and the healer makes sure to remove the debuffs ASAP

You can just stun the first Tail Screw without issue. Before the second Tail Screw though, the boss will tether the tank and stun them before using Tail Screw on another player. The tank can pass on the tether to another player though, leaving the tank unstunned and able to stun the boss.

The scorpion puts DOTs on people, and does tail screw which reduces your hp to 1 (which means the dot will kill you). This means that you need to be esunaing and it becomes manageable

@21:40 Ah so YOU were the Mentor/Veteran, and the healer! Yeah, this one is on you as a healer. Karbalos' gimmick is that he puts a DOT on people then uses Tail Screw (also a BLU spell) to reduce them to 1 HP. It's an Esuna spam fight, rather than a faceroll and heal through the DOT fight. It's quite a unique oddity among fights in FF14, and deadly if the healer and/or group as a whole are unaware of the gimmick.

Karlabos' mechanics are that he puts a DoT on people, and then uses Tail Screw to reduce them to single-digit HP. Tail Screw is special damage that can't be blocked or reduced, so if the DoT is still active on the person he Screws, they're screwed. Clear the DoT and it's mostly fine.

Creech and Chong 15:2 actually. But it was repeated in Harold and Kumar at 15:3. So good on ya! Okay, Reaper issue, correct. The gallows buff swaps to another buff when 'consumed'. Like most, if not all melee, max damage comes from reading the tool tips to understand flank and rear. That reaper, only stuck to one position and by not burning that buff, they never got the other for the other position. And as for bard, you should have 100% song running. You have three that chain together fine, not to include raid buff and personal buff. So yes, low dps because of those.

That Reaper 100% wasn't using his gallows skills, you're right. And the Bard likely needs to some teaching, cause if they're not using their songs on cooldown, they (and the Reaper) are likely misunderstanding their job.

For Qitana, I'd say the Reaper has weak gear, since they're HP is so close to the Bard and healers HP, and the Bard is just dragging their ass on the carpet, because every fight they are dead last in agro it seems.

Short version for Sastasha Hard - Karlabos: If you have the Slime debuff on and you get hit by Tail Screw, you are probably going to die. Healer is nominally supposed to be Esuna-ing that, or putting shields up, or something.

@@Zyart yeah, def good to stun it to reduce some damage and possibly save a life, but if we are talking about the ideal kill the party is spread to reduce overlap on the debuffs AND the healer is removing every single debuff ASAP. The debuffs aren't just DOTS but also applies a slow ("slow" in this game is a huge debuff because it increases the cooldown on your GCD)

For the Sastasha HM dungeon, a Tank or Melee should Stun tail screw whilst the healer esunas the debuffs. If you have no melee and the tank gets the prey marker, as a healer or dps you can take the prey marker off them to be the one targetted for stun. This frees your tank to stun tail screw. Other than that it's just esuna as fast as possible.

Karlabos is a reminder esuna is a skill. Tail screw takes you to 1 hp but if you got the sludge on you it 1 shots anybody. Shield might save

The reason that boss was murdering you is that Tail Screw reduces your HP to barely anything... so if you haven't Esuna'd the DoT, you immediately die. It's a 'stop being lazy about Esuna' check, basically.

For the low DPS pull at the start of Qitana's Ravel, it probably wasn't a good sign that the Bard was getting procs for their single-target rotation. Which in theory could be procced by them trying to dot up everything, but while I'd understand why they thought it'd be a good idea, that's not what Bard should do in AoE

On one hand, I miss ShB bard (even if it meant bard was 'meh' at the start of an expansion/raid tier, and top tier by the end of an expansion/tier from higher crit rates). Bards with mages ballad ready loved large packs since a couple targets DoT'd meant a non-stop rain of death barrage. Now DoTs just not being tied to anything core to Bard's high end kit kinda hurts, DoTs are slowly being killed off from all jobs

Fun fact - The orbs in Ramuh are there so the two that get lightning-tethered can break it As a healer, one guaranteed way of making this duty more exciting is to eat every orb as it appears You WILL get flamed but you WILL stay awake. Worth.

Honestly... minor NPCs may have been way cooler in the Aitiascope than the same deaths they've been milking player nostalgia for. I woulda loved that. Also they totally put in Rhitatyn because they had a Q&A at some point in SHB where someone asked about Cape Westwind being harder or something, and they were like, "Literally who?" And him in Aitiascope is like them saving face.

To be fair to Rhitathyn back during the actual 2.0 launch, the opening days, the first players in the world hitting 50... Cape Westwind did murder folks, even wiped I think, because we're going in there with barely some job quest gear, some other white gear garbage, barely at the whopping ilvl of 40ish to queue it if it even had a ilvl requirement. And with 2.0's aggro, frankly you'd just get murdered by the adds as a healer with a whole like 1200 HP. And Rhitathyn would live long enough to cover most of the room in a massive AOE for ~1500 damage as well. Ultima phase 1 was even more of a wipe fiesta. So the fight WAS fine for players in ilvl 40 quest + random crap gear. It was still giga simple due to being ARR, but it wasn't a total joke in numbers for the time it debuted.
