SivaSankar Kalisetti Hi, can anyone please tell me the difference between data files and Redo log files? Both writes data only after commit? why we need redo when data files are there? If redo holds all information...then uncommitted data will also be there in redo files right? [I CAN NOT COMMENT DIRETLY..I CAN JUST ABLE TO REPLY. SO USING LAST CONVERSATION. DONT MIND ]

@Dhiv... Purpose of Redo log files is "recovery". The actual data is written only in data files, but the changes pertaining to database, i.e., sql statements or changed vectors are written to redo log files only, that may be needed in case instance crashes. Suppose instance crashes and data is still not copied from database buffer cache to the data files. So before the DB is brought online, the data files/redo log files and control files must be consistent and hence, it is from the redo log files that the database will know what changes were made to the table(any any other data structure) by applying those changes to data files.

Sir, you show connection to machine 'ec2...' using your Unix id & pw. After explaining background processes, you start Sql plus in client machine. Is it correct to understand that you were connected to same db server with 2 instances or you made two connections with Unix id/pw & Sql plus ? If so, what is the difference between the two connections ? Regarding Telnet - Sql plus screens where we type Sql commands is also a telnet connection ? I am at an entry level of learning. Regards.
