They get dug in and covered, so running a bit hot isn’t usually one of the problems for them. Fuel filters and injector pumps on the other hand.

According to Allied Ordnance Publication AOP-38-3,[1] a NATO publication, a battleshort is "The capability to bypass certain safety features in a system to ensure completion of the mission without interruption due to the safety feature." It also says, "Examples of bypassed safety features are circuit overload protection, and protection against overheating".[1]

Yes, I know what the battle short does and it wasn't activated and I didn't want to use it. Could have been used to override the overtemp warning but the excitation failure would have happened.

I have had Optima batteries do the same thing and when they blow their beets they make a lovely whistling sound... Something about that Boulder tech that's great until it isn't.

I think they weren't happy with how hot it got in there after the unit shut down & there was not air being pulled through anymore.

A cliff hanger! Arrrrrgh. Serious question you've probably answered elsewhere: Why run it 20% overrated? Seems like a formula to kill something. Great video series.
@CallMeColtLLC2 ай бұрын
The generators have a .8 PF rating. Without getting to technical, that is roughly 80% on a full resistive load. So a 1 PF rating is 20% more. MEP 803A can take this load all day and it is 10KW rated.

@@CallMeColtLLC yes sir, they’re tested to 133% for the government. I’ve seen the 802/803’s do 120% for hours on end.

I obviously don’t know what the conclusion was, but if the coolant was drained during the rad swap, it’s generally a good idea to do a couple heat cycles to really work any trapped air out before working it hard. I was concerned with the coolant temperatures in this coming from a guy that works on the 800 series of generators, but maybe those yanmars don’t mind the heat. I’d consider 210° pretty warm for a mechanical diesel and reduce load to compensate for it, however these should be rated for 133% per the cummins/onan contract if it’s the same as the fermont contract as far as requirements.
@CallMeColtLLCАй бұрын
The requirements are a little different. The air did burp out. It was warm due to being overloaded.

If gotten new, it comes with the proper cable & software to operate semi-remotly using the USB on a laptop.

@@rodneymiddleton9624 I will have an upload discussing what happened. In short, it was overloaded & there is no safety to protect itself like the older units. Just the warning. But, it may have had underlying issues as well.

Good enough for government work. 🤣 but most commercial generators are like this now too.

I thought it was odd, but I'm sure it is done for a reason. More to help with cold weather operations and keeping temperature up and then the displacement of heat is greater in hot environments.

Are you going to fix her up and get her running again or is it going to be parts and scrap? I'm guessing it would have done the 10KW for six hours without a problem...
@CallMeColtLLC2 ай бұрын
Yes, I think at just 10KW it would have passed the test, but if there was an underlying problem, it would have come up down the road later & died a slower death. It will sit until I can get another one for doner parts or a stator.
@Richard19772 ай бұрын
@@CallMeColtLLC 👍🏻 Just makes me wonder what the underlying problem could be. Or maybe these are just not built that tough?
