So curious question. Can you enable the repeater option and still use it as a portable PTT for team radio setup? Or does it become a dedicated repeater?

This would be a bit overkill for that. I'd consider something smaller to conserve on fuel and charge the batteries a bit slower. Like an MEP 802A. You can get a kit that remotely controls it as well. Much less fuel consumption & cheaper to buy/maintain. most people think they need a 10KW military generator when they don't.

I think the issue might have been the gen set's ability to shut itself down, when overloaded. That is why I would never do a test run with overload parameters. My test would be to run 80-100% for 6hrs or so with occasional spikes in load. The gen set is able to handle up to 120% of capacity but not the long term. Also there might have been some dirt or critters nest in stator which eventually caught fire or overheated and caused the stator wires to melt. Either or, I would find a stator specialist and rewind it. Should be around 1000 if you take the stator to the specialist and install it after. Good series though. Really enjoyed it.
@CallMeColtLLC

Thank you. The MEP 802A & 803A can run 120% all day with no issues. This one, after reading more in depth, should be able to do 110% no problem all day. There definitely was an issue already & I finished it off. I could remove it and get it rewound, be I'm not sure the cost & effort is worth it in my situation. It will take me away from things that make me money instead of costing me money. But, it is there if I get the time!

There is one single solitary way this engine speed and power is controlled, no spark, no throttle, it is just the fuel. If you dial back the injector pump, the governor opens up the injector pump further to compensate and maintain speed, that’s it. The only thing you accomplish by adjusting the injector pumps is to unbalance the fuel to each cylinder. You’re a good man, and you’ve educated me in many areas. You should ignore almost all the chatter on KZbin and most of the chatter on Steel Soldiers. Wet stacking these water cooled generators is a myth. The Guy 😉 with all the experience on Steel Soldiers, has that experience on air cooled units, the MEP-002a and MEP-003a, that’s a different beast. Its cylinder, intake, and exhaust temperature is dependent upon load. This water cooled unit, the MEP-802a will never wet stack if it’s properly maintained. It runs at constant a 1800 rpm, there is no “idle” like a truck or bus engine. Once it’s up to operating temperature, about 15 minutes, it just sits there and it will run for ever and ever, whether producing 0 Watts or producing 5000 Watts. The thermostat will open or close to maintain oil and cylinder temperature. If you run outside of operating parameters, like at 7500 W like so many meatheads, then no guarantees. If it’s chugging black smoke, there’s something out of spec, then no guarantees. It’s rated 5000W at 0.8 power factor, that means you can run 25% more current through the stator with no ill effects, that’s 6250 VA, not 6250 Watts. The generator would only be straining to produce 5000W at 0.8 power factor, 6250 VA. If you run 6250 W, you’ll start chugging black smoke, that’s OK by me, but it will accumulate that black stuff in the valves, manifold, muffler, exhaust, then, maybe, if you’re lucky, it will burn off after being run for some further time within spec (0-5000W), or maybe you choke out the exhaust ports, who knows. The last thing you’d want to do under those circumstances is to run it at “full load” to burn it off. It pains me, ow, it hurts, to listen and to watch some of the MEP-802/3A videos on KZbin, certainly one in particular where a guy, not you, who deals in them, ruins a perfectly good generator engine, clueless. There are more meatheads than experts, so on the average, you will do more harm than good following their advice. I believe, though never fully tested myself, that you can draw enough power to stall the engine, but never harm the generator windings. I have witnessed it, without doing a controlled test. That means you can overload the engine routinely and produce carbon chuff, and this probably produces the only real life evidence that falsely perpetuates the wet stacking myth. You don’t have to agree with me, or even like me. Thank you for your service.
@CallMeColtLLC
@CallMeColtLLC 26 күн бұрын
The more I have learned about these generators, these video may be pointless... you're correct. I may do an "audit" of previously made videos & delete some for this reason. But, these units can wet stack, but it will take a LOT of hours to do so with a lot of conditions working together to make it happen. I ran my MEP 802A for hundreds of hours at very little load and cycled it up just a very little at times. After about 1,000 hours it has compression issues but for different reasons. I think people worry to much about it, but it is just something to be aware of. If you use it, it will be fine.

Don’t think you made mistakes. These units are rated at 10kw at .8 PF. With the purely resistive loads you used you used you were under the rated output…. I routinely run my 802A at 6.5KW running 100% resistive loads. Don’t be down, you got a deal on the unit and could make that back on parting it out if you wanted. meanwhile you learned lots and made some interesting videos. As others have said, pull the generator head and have it re-wound. Mechanically it’s solid.

I see lots of comments to get it rewound. I don't think any of them have ever had such work performed. It is pretty much relegated to large industry stuff. 50HP motor in leading eight pole delta configuration, on a 4" shaft with a mount configuration nobody has seen. Hence why they get repaired over being replaced. If you don't have industry pockets they are not going to give up a slot for low revenue non recurring business that could be utilized with repeat customers that don't wince at the estimate, and pay the invoice even at 2x.
