The funniest thing I've seen so far with some people's reaction to Mephiles' dialogue is how they seem to think he would keep up his calm, collected demeanor. Dude worked behind the scenes during Sonic 06 to build up plans to fuse back with Iblis and when those failed, he just went with the most blunt approach. Then after becoming a god, he was torn down at least three different times (remember each super hedgehog could easily handle Solaris, the issue was completely removing him from past, present, and future), and erased from existence. Considering he remembers everything and is actively trying to worm his way back to existence, he throws all his ego aside and is absolutely desperate to exist. The dude is sadistic and manipulative but you can't sit there and tell me he isn't going to throw a bitch-fit when he doesn't get his way. I'm sure he would've been cursing everyone and everything if Solaris could talk during his downfall. That's genuinely impressive, thanks Ian Flynn and the team behind for such amazing interactions. That guy was the best thing to happen to this series in a long time.

I love how this fight just shows you how much more powerful Shadow has become without ever telling you, in 06 he was with Team Dark and literally needed to remove his Inhibitor Rings in order to stand a chance once Mephiles broke out the clones, and he still needed to Chaos Boost in order to deal damage to him. He was still more powerful than him technically, but Mephiles still definitely posed a threat to him. Here? Nah man, Shadow just doesn't care, he doesn't even need to Chaos Boost in order to damage him, he can just do it whenever, and even when he breaks out the clones, he manhandles every last one of them and beats him so hard that he literally forces him back into Scepter of Darkness, and when considering that this is a Mephiles who's fighting for his damn life, that's impressive as hell. I just love when Sonic games show just how far characters have come since certain points in time with stuff like this.

To be fair a good part of why its so much easier for Shadow now are the Doom powers. Doom Morph lets him fuse into Mephiles darkness And Doom spear allows his Chaos Spears to hit with far more power.

Honestly it was a little unnerving going underground in White Space and hearing the music change like that. You’ve found something even worse than Black Doom lurking below that would cause incredible damage if allowed to exist again, and it needs to be wiped from existence entirely to prevent its evil from destroying time and space itself. I do wish Mephiles had been more involved with the story but what they did with him here was really great. With the Kingdom Valley levels being amazing as well, I’m glad for us to be so far past the days of 06 content being taboo.

It's still effectively that it never existed though. For this universe anyway. Gerald posits that the reason for Mephiles' appearance in Generations (and subsequently, Iblis and its spawns, the desolate version of Kingdom Valley, and Crisis City) is because the damage to the timeline has stirred up "echoes of past alterations." Effectively, Solaris stopped existing when the candle was blown out, and it's halves didn't begin existing again until this particular, temporarily anomalous, lightning in a bottle circumstance. On the metatemporal level Solaris still and always will have to "exist" as the cause that led creation of the current incarnation of the universe, but for this universe, it's "literally" non-existent.

It’s the added context that Mephiles has been trapped in this erased timeline ever since Sonic 06 retconed those events from ever happening. *18. TRAPPED. ISOLATED. YEARS* this psychopath has been trapped in his own personal hell plotting his revenge to escape and reestablish himself back into the main continuity of the Sonic series, you can *HEAR IT* in his voice he is DESPERATE to escape now that Shadow is here. To add salt on the already open wound, Mephiles remembers all the humiliation Shadow put him through and want his blood and Shadow doesn’t even remember Mephiles at all, only feels like this guy needs to be taken out NOW.

Especially since, now that Mephiles knows what it’s like to be erased from existence, he likely wouldn’t want to inflict it on anyone else, which throws his entire original plan out the window. Seeing him want to get revenge on Shadow for his defeat in this game would be awesome, especially if he finds a way to keep the new timeline stable while he’s wreaking havoc on him.

I love how Mephiles was handled in this game. He’s this shady dude locked away in the basement, out of sight unlike the other bosses, that time itself wants to forget. Then you have the man himself who’s far more desperate than he was in 06, going from calm and collected to clinging to the slight chance that he can defeat Shadow and get free. He starts the fight by using the same move that killed Sonic, and then basically pulls out all the stops to get Shadow, but he never really had a chance. I’m also a fan of the new voice they gave him, it fits the character really well (or at least this version of him).

The biggest issue was the fact that Robbie is too young and high-pitched to play Mephiles, and they could have gone with literally any other VA who has a deep voice (Imari Williams, Reagan Murdock, Jason Marnocha, etc). Mephiles is an ageless, timeless being who will mow down anything and anyone to get what he wants, and unfortunately I feel like Robbie just makes him sound like the standard edgelord twinks he usually plays; people say it’s to make him sound desperate, but you can be desperate and have a deeper voice. I LIKE Robbie’s acting, but this wasn’t it, they had way better options out there.

Well in this situation, the 06 timeline has been deleted so it’s semi permanently stuck in time, so technically Mephiles hasn’t killed Sonic yet, but I have no doubt he REMEMBERS killing Sonic. Mephiles just tries to go straight for the kill with Shadow, but this time out of desperation instead of being crafty. Thankfully Shadow was more on guard than Sonic was at the time, but it just shows how much Mephiles wants to crawl his way back into the main timeline so badly! Once a dirty fighter, ALWAYS a dirty fighter.

@@ExtraordinaryFate If I were to say, I’d say the Modern timeline is what we know the franchise as now. The 06 timeline is what occurred during the events of Sonic 06, just perpetuated in a sort of limbo state where time just doesn’t exist since the events from that game were deleted and reset into the timeline we know now. The only reason we can travel to where Mephiles is held up is because of the Time Eater’s shenanigans and thus returning life to this deleted timeline, albeit a small portion of it. Remember Solaris is a being that is inter dimensional so while OUR timeline Sonic and friends don’t remember anything that happened in 06, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t another universe where 06 DID happen, it’s just in a weird limbo state where time doesn’t flow and is stuck. Mephiles can technically still remember what happened in the timeline due to his ability to travel through time and space, albeit he’s significantly weaker physically and mentally when Shadow fights him technically for the first time in Shadow Generations. This is further supported by the fact Shadow doesn’t recognize Mephiles in this fight in Generations or even the seal he HIMSELF put Mephiles in back in 06 when he and Silver traveled back in time together. In short, time travel is confusing as all heck 😂

What I find fascinating is that Mephiles despite being defeated at the end of 06, survived a whole universe being wiped out of existence. you are probably absolutely correct about this but to be fair: it is a very familiar situation: a fight against the same person in the same arena. you can't tell me the thought didn't at least cross his mind while he was sitting there watching shadow homing attack his clones that's another thing -- why would attacking his clones do anything to his health bar? his clones did no such thing in his 06 fight -- only damaging the original would do anything. it's just a little fishy to me.

This fight was pretty cool, but I swear Shadow absolutely curb-stomps Mephiles here and he doesn't even take off his inhibitor rings. The hits you get on him are absolutely brutal. Not a complaint at all, just an observation. The former major villain of Sonic 06 gets his lights punched out and Shadow barely breaks a sweat. Makes me feel like a god beating him up.

Remember that like in all Shounen stories, the heroes are constantly growing stronger with each adventure. He'll in generations we see just how much stronger Sonic gets between games when he took down perfect chaos by himself without the emeralds. And Shadow here is capable of taking down metal overload and Devil Doom without going super. Mephiles may be strong, but he hasn't grown in power while the others kept improving. He's outclassed now.

Whats definitely messed up is Metal Overlord only has the memories from sonic heros during his battle. Meaning he doesn’t know about his defeat in the future. But Mephiles, even though his boss battle took him back to his original location where he fought Shadow. He remembers everything. He knows he got whipped from history and this is his last chance. You can tell by his voice that hes super desperate to exist again. (I mean who wouldn’t) My question is, how did he retain his Memories?? Maria and Gerald dont know they’ve been killed. Plus it’s funny that Mephiles tried to pull another cheap trick by using the same tactic he used to kill Sonic in his timeline against Shadow who was more on guard than Sonic was at the time. Of course Shadow would dodge the attack not giving Mephiles the satisfaction of another empty victory. Once a dirty fighter, *ALWAYS* a dirty fighter.

I love the intro of this boss, when Mephiles first introduced himself to Shadow in 06, he slowly appeared in front of him and took Shadow's form, he had a very creepy aura, one that definitely made Shadow uncomfortable. Here though? As soon as he escapes the seal he was trapped in, instead of appearing in front of Shadow to try and make him uncomfortable like in 06, he summons his minions to fight Shadow, and after Shadow's done with them, he sneaks behind him and ambushes him by using the beam that got SONIC KILLED BACK IN 06. Just think about it, he used the same beam that got SONIC THE FUCKING HEDGEHOG KILLED on Shadow, who unlike Sonic, actually dodged it. He was really going straight for that kill, and i don't blame him as it was his only chance to get back in the main timeline and cause more chaos. This was his last stand, if he won, he could fuse back with Iblis (i wouldn't be surprised if Iblis was roaming around Crisis City considering Sonic also visited that place during OG Gens) and re-create Solaris, if he lost, he would be stuck in the seal he was stuck in after 06 in a very hidden spot in White Space. Forever. It truly showed how damn desperate he was, especially considering he used that beam only once in 06 and it was because his plans were starting to fall apart.
