Congratulations! You’re right Sherpas are the real heros when we climb in Nepal. Hats off to them
@davidketley53592 жыл бұрын
The main thing is to take as much time as possible. Acclimatisation is a funny thing, but time at altitude is very important. Mera Peak is a serious climb and it's easy to get the wrong impression that it's only a trekking Peak. It was the hardest thing I have ever done as I was not properly prepared. I found Island Peak relatively easy but we went the long way round. Because of the time constraints of organised trekking groups I went back many time to Nepal organising my own treks, that way I could dictate the pace of a trek and if I really liked an area we would just stop and take it all in. Thanks for your effort taking the film I know it can be hard work.

@@Dave_Whyte Hi Dave, both views are breathtaking but the atmosphere is different for each. From Mera Peak the view is open on the Himalayan chain and several 8000m+ peaks, but you don't feel so much in the heart of the mountains. From Sherpani Col, although the altitude is a bit lower, you feel much more deep in the heart of the Himalayas. 7000m+ peaks seem at hands reach and the climb is also more technical than Mera Peak as you need to abseil down both Sherpani Col and West Col. I guess you'll want to go back and see for yourself now!

@@Dave_Whyte Dear Dave. Thanks for your fast answer! I also have the Mavic 2 Pro, a super drone. Wasn't that a little too much weight? Did you take several batteries with you? How manny? were there possibilities to charge? And yes, I plan to do a little more in that region - when it is possible again. After all, I made it over 6800m at the Kedar Dom, so in principle it will be possible to climb Mera Peak.
@Dave_Whyte3 жыл бұрын
@@UdoKellner No problem always happy to help. Yes for sure I was carrying more equipment that the others in my team and it often was hard going. I had 3 batteries with me and one powerbank. The powerbank I could charge with my solar panel and it would be able to charge one battery. Also I needed to keep the batteries against my body for the summit bid. I was able to charge my batteries at tea houses occasionally , however some did not have enough power to do so. Anywhere running off generator power was generally fine. After Mera there wasn’t much chance to charge again so I had to rely on solar. That’s a good sign then , you should have no troubles with Mera.

Hi Dave - Thanks for a great video and story! I'm thinking of the same expedition, also 2021, as Matt below (though don't know him...) and I was wondering about hiring equipment there, as recommended by a lot of the operators. Your views? Particularly on boots?
@Dave_Whyte4 жыл бұрын
That’s for taking the tune to watch it. Personally I would recommend taking your own. You can break them in before you go and also you will know that they will fit. One of the guys on my expedition rented from Kathmandu at he was a size 14 or 15 I believe. He struggled to find a pair and the only pair he did find were literally falling to bits. He summited Mera and the Amphu Labsta but decided not to risk it again in Island peak as he had got a bit of frost nip. Other equipment I don’t see a problem with renting but feet I would definitely look after. The boots aren’t the cheapest but I would have hated to have not made it due to poor equipment.
@wannabecrooner80244 жыл бұрын
@@Dave_Whyte Brilliant, thanks very much for the swift reply. I do have a pair of Scapa trekking boots, crampon compatible, about 16 years old, not used much but did most of Lhakpa Ri when new and also did summit night Kili last year. I can't see the model, but they are reverse leather and blue. Any knowledge of these or comments ...
@Dave_Whyte4 жыл бұрын
Not sure about these boots but I guess if you had them on Lhakpa Ri at 7000m then they should be fine. I’ve got Scarpa Phantom 6000’s. Feet still got cold but they were good. Island Peak I believe you can get away without double boots but for Mera Peak it’s definitely recommended, we did see a lot of unsuccessful attempts on Mera due to the cold.

@Dave_Whyte4 жыл бұрын
Matt Adkins Thanks man really appreciate that. That’s unfortunate my plans have also been knocked on the head for now. Plus side is usually the weather is more stable in October compared to April. My advice would be to get some good training in months before , the trek in will also build your fitness when you are there. Also ensure you have good gear. Don’t rely on renting double boots from Kathmandu, we seen a lot of people turn back on Mera Peak due to the cold. If you are filming and stuff consider a good solar charger to take with you. If you need anything else just give me a shout 👍🏼 best of luck to you.
