Harvesting Olives in Portugal and a CONFESSION

It's Olive Harvest Season. With the weather against us, we harvest the olives for the second time.
One of us has a confession about olives.
We prune some of the big olive tress to get them down in height and collect the olives.

Dear Nearby Veggies, I just found you in KZbin and subscribed immediately. I love what you are doing, and that you choose Portugal as your refuge. I'm Portuguese myself, living many years abroad. My family also has olives trees and a house in the inner Portugal to take care of. We do our best to keep it, but it's a lot of work. About the olive trees, I don't know how isolated you are, but olive picking is traditionally a kind of communal task. Maybe you know this already, but in any case here it goes. If you do it for the neighbors, they also do it for you. And there is always someone in the area, that usually does it for a day's pay. Other option is to make it a family/friend event, where you supply food and stay, and they help you with the work. A day full of hard work, but also with lots of good food and wine to keep you going. All options to assure help for the olive picking, because it's really hard work, I know... Anyway, I mean it, for the coming years, as food for thought ;-). For now, you are doing a fantastic job! Good luck and best wishes!

Thank you Maria. We love the communal part of picking. This year, it's been a crazy race to get the picking done between the rain and thunderstorms. The harvest in our area last year was staggered over many weeks, but this year it seems that everyone was out on the same days. With Dan working during the week, it's not so easy to schedule our help with the neighbours. We hope to do better next year. When we have the house done, we're really looking forward to making food and sharing much more. Thank you for subscribing. See you soon.

Hey guys. I live in the south of Portugal in a small village called Moura (The capital of Olive Oil) and i have around 20 olive trees. i just wanted to share with you the way i've been doing the "conserva" with the olives, getting them ready to eat. i have a lot of Galega which look similar to the ones you show on this video and for these i make 3 or 4 vertical cuts and i put them in water for 15 days. I change the water once a day for the first 10 days and then i start adding a bit of salt to the water for the next 5 or 6 days, still changing it daily. After that you can do the "salmoura", 1kg of salt for 10litres of water if you want to keep them for long periods of time (they will still be crunchy one year later). Normally i just add oregano when i do the salmoura and they are delicious but you can add laurel, garlic, a slice of orange or lemon. If you have other varieties of olives, bigger ones like Cordovil or Manzanilla you can even pick them while they're green, just before they start to ripen. For those ones, instead of making the cuts, you smash them with a hammer and then follow the same process. After changing the water for 15 days, if you're not sure if they are ready for the salmoura, just try eating one or two and see if they're still bitter. Thank you for sharing your experience and i hope you enjoy everything your land has to offer! Miguel

Oooh, that’s seriously hard pruning. Olives grow on 2 year old branches. The ones you all cut would give olives next year. (this year is a very poor olive-year anyway everywhere). But sure next year no olives. New branches will grow though in the next season and you can harvest then in 2024. (Please no pruning next year).

Ah yes. We have hard pruned some trees, not all. We're working on a long term plan of getting the height down as well as improving production. Our spindliest tree has produced the most olives this year. Learning more about pruning from watching the locals. Thank you.

Bless you, you look soooo tired. You can buy plastic rakes to get the olives out of the trees, the ones I've seen are yellow and can be attached to a pole. More expensive alternatives are electric powered agitation rakes that shake the olives out of the trees onto your ground sheets. This year unfortunately, our olive trees have not been very productive.
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Жыл бұрын
We have those yellow rakes but it’s quite sore on your neck looking up all the time. Our harvest was poor this year. A combination of many things - drought, inadequate pruning then torrential rains when the olives were ready. We have a small olive grove which doesn’t justify the mechanical shaker. Pruning brought down most of the olives. Let’s hope we all have a better harvest next year 😊

We lived off grid in Spain for 6 years, had 250 olive trees & we started harvesting in November & finished in Feb/March time working every weekend, I've never seen people harvest olives like you did, chopping down so much, we used little yellow olive combs to get the olives off the trees (in Spain) & only trim trees a little each year but do alternative trees so you still get a harvest next year. We took them to the village & got them pressed each year 👍 did you get yours pressed ? Or did you pickle them(soak in brine)? Your doing a great job!

They're used here too. Most people use their hands to remove the olives from the cut branches. Some of the pruning is done during the harvest season and the rest people do later (since Christmas until now) Our trees are too tall so they're being taken down in height (a few each year.) This year many people did not harvest at all as the weather was extremely wet following an extreme drought. The yields were low and the olives ripened early and fell to the ground with the heavy rain. Our trees will take time to produce really good crops again. Over time, we will get more efficient at managing the land. Right now, we have a lot going on with restoring the quinta's terraces and planting and clearing. The land will one day be a beautiful place. We are enjoying our small achievements and learning from our Portuguese neighbours.

Nice to have the firewood from the garden. Olive branches are dense and I found that they are really good for firewood.

Pruning is all part of the harvest process. We are hard pruning some trees because they are way too tall to harvest in the future. It will take a few years to get them into shape.

Another beautiful video but please do not over do and hurt yourselves . I grew up in California , there were olives everywhere but only a couple of people I knew made brined olives . There are still many olive trees as they are popular for landscaping but most are males or people have their trees sprayed so they don't develop fruit . I bet the Portuguese find this appalling ! I saw on The Portugal Project a mini olive press -looked like a time consuming job but interesting if you only have a small amount of olives . Nice to see you enjoying yourselves with the cake as they say everything in moderation including moderation:)
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Жыл бұрын
Thank you. The olives are going to the lagar for processing. We're not dedicated to doing everything ourselves. Brining is something we wanted to do until I started selecting the olives and realised how difficult it was to find a perfect olive. And the moderation of cake is moderated. :-)

@@NearbyVeggies Do you grow your olives organically? I heard i the lagar everything gets mixed, so you get oil from olives trees that have been sprayed. Do you find that to be an issue?
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Жыл бұрын
We grow completely without chemicals not even organically approved. We haven’t seen any spraying of olive trees near us. It’s mostly small subsistence farming around here. We chose to live in an are with no big commercial growing operations for that very reason. Yes, the lagar gives mixed oil if your harvest is too small to run the press for your harvest but we’re fine with that. We’re doing our bit.

You're doing a good job. I admire you for your hard work at the farm, you're really enjoying it 😄. I'd love to be able to do the same. I'm living in Scotland at the moment and it has been quite a challenge for me. It's cold 🥶, very little Sun and many grey days. I hope one day to be able to go back to Portugal. Sorry my curiosity, but where is your farm located exactly?

Hello. Lovely vid, just came across it whilst searching about olive tree harvesting. Mind me asking what do you do with all those olives in the end? Surely you can't consume them all, if a single tree can give up to 50 kg of fruit? How do you find customers? Or do the buyers find you instead? Any contracts directly with olive oil producers?
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies 7 ай бұрын
We use the olives for olive oil. We get about 1 litre of oil from 10kg of olives.

Hello, from south west france. when I was young, I lived 5years in corsica picking olives we where told how to prepare them, either you dry them, last on of the season, they don't remain bitter when dry, we brough them to the mill to make oil, the better oil, because their isn't any moisture left in them. when fresh and black, we put them in water with wood ash for 2weeks, before rincing and putting them in clear water, before oiling them in jares, with herbs we found in the maquis in corsica. .

It's quite an eye opener and makes you think twice about complaining about the price of olive oil or nuts when you see how tough it is to harvest and process these items even on an industrial scale.
