The biggest problem with Merc Treads (which you forgot to mention) is that it doesn´t effect knockups, drowsy, nearsight, suppresions, stasis, displacements, so half the cc is already unaccounted. Combine that with cc having a minimum duration of 0.3-0.625 seconds rendering tenacity stacking useless most of the time and you get nobody wasting their money on mercs when more useful boots exist.

Mercs be like: I'm great against cc tanks! (Leona) Also Mercs: Oh but I'm useless against Zac, Ornn, Nautilius, and every champion that has knock-up as their main cc (most of them)

Epholos already brought up how it doesn't affect stuff like displacements, etc. but it's also because, tenacity is just not that valuable of a stat in the way it's designed. It doesn't make you any less vulnerable to getting one shotted if you reduce morgana's Q from 3 seconds to 2 seconds. Another issue is that most of the time, champions get CC chained anyway. On one hand, if crowd control worked in the fashion of having diminishing returns (i.e. first CC lasts full duration, second cc within X seconds is half as effective, then third cc is 1/3rd as effective, etc.) then merc treads would be significantly more influential. Problem is, you can't really shorten knockups and displacements since that bricks a *ton* of abilities. Stuff like Vi's ultimate for instance, locks herself in an animation during the time she's locking down her opponent. Or for a time when they reduced Renekton's empowered W stun from 1.5 seconds to 1, with merc treads, you actually stun *yourself* longer than you stun your opponent. It's a tough design issue to address for sure. And I don't know if adding an internal cooldown is a good idea either since cc chaining is a very big part of this game.

I dont get why so few people main support i main support and love striving to be the best support for my team i guess its because so many people in league suffer from main charecter syndrome

@@pumpkinpie5471 ya. I understand why though. All the other laners have more potential to get big kills and dominate. On support you are the one setting up those moments for them. But you dont actually Reap the spoils directly. Support is like the unsung hero of the team. Well as long as your a good support that is.

The main issue with Mercury's Treads isn't what anyone is saying. You don't win lane, buying Merc Treads. Plated Steelcaps, Ionian Boots, and Berserker's Greaves all help win lane in one way or another. Other boots get you back to lane faster (and help you roam) to pick up more XP and win lane that way. Merc Treads are the only boots that have almost no impact on your laning phase. They are generally most useful later, only on tanks, to break out of a cc chain after vanguarding into the entire enemy team - and that is NOT useful, since there are so many ways to melt tanks now. Plus it's usually really dumb to wait that long to get full boots on a tank, as you'll get kited. Merc Treads are obsolete because the game is so dependent on laning phase going well (especially for melee champions; if you lose lane you can't farm). So the solution is to make Mercury's Treads also relevant in laning phase. There's no issue with what they do - tenacity IS useful (and Merc Treads is the best source of it), and MR is useful. They just need a little something extra: - "You take no damage from ranged minion attacks." - Boom, done. Now Merc Treads let you go in to trade, ignoring enemy cannon/caster minions. You can poke safely even when facing a large minion wave. Just as Plated Steelcaps makes melee minions (and cannon minions) do very little to you, Merc Treads also protects you from minions. Later in the game, this passive does nothing - it's mainly just useful to assist in laning phase, the way stats on other boots do.

I think the main reason tenacity had fallen behind is because people don't play as much mage champion as before (especialy on mid). Most mages that have cc have either root or stun which are both affected by the Mercs, however tanks and bruisers more often have knock-ups as their cc's, which are not affected by the Mercs at all, I think that's the reason

I think that's a good reason and point as well. There's a lot more AD top and Mid laners that are prevalent in today's meta vs 5 years ago

my option 3 for mercs would be to nerf tenacity on them to like 20% and give them a adaptive helmet passive that gives tenacity against a spell if youve been hit by it that why you have an option against that one lux/morgana/ezreal spamming Q every 3s seconds

I think a good change for Merc’s would be to give it a new passive of immunity. After getting hit with a cc ability, the wearer is immune to cc relative to the duration of the effect. Like if you got hit by Lulu’s 2.25 polymorph, but your tenacity cut it down to 1.25, then you’re immune after the duration for 1.25. I like this way you wouldn’t be stun locked and if the entire enemy team has cc, it’s better to build lots of tenacity with mercs included, and if there is only 1 cc champ on the enemy’s team you can opt for not mercs and just sunfire/runes. This would probably be the best change IMO as FoN is already giving you insane magic resist. Edit- Or make Mercs the only thing that reduced airborne duration

Three important pieces you forgot to mention: 1. Apparently, CC can never actually be reduced below 0.3 seconds (I didn't even know this until looking up point #3). 2. As others have already stated, knock up / knock back cc is unaffected by tenacity, making it slightly weaker than it should be against CC, but most importantly 3. The math of adding tenacity sources makes stacking inefficient. Using your Udyr example (warning: math ahead), a fully stacked Sunfire Cape (20% tenacity) plus the Legend: Tenacity rune (30%) wouldn't actually give you 50% tenacity, it would give 0.8 x 0.7 = .56, or 44% tenacity. Add in Merc Treads to that equation, and you end up with 0.8 x 0.7 x 0.7 = .39, or 61% tenacity. This means instead of getting 30% tenacity off those boots, you got 17% 😰. tl;dr having multiple sources of tenacity makes each less effective, so why waste money on them when you can get that tenacity elsewhere.

Why take it on your boots when you can just take it in your runes? The Mr is also really ass. Plus most of the characters who buy defensive boots are either tanks or fighters who have way better mr itemization in evenshroud. It also doesn't help their case that the 2 sources of tenacity in runes are unflinching and legend tenacity which are in the main trees for those sub classes. I think to add even further onto it they've introduced so many overloaded as hell auto based champs like reworked sivir, zeri, belveth, viego etc etc and I CAN'T take a 12% damage reduction alternative to that in my runes. Then the utility from Ionians and Swifties and in certain cases mobis are just too good. For example janna creating a glacial field for like 5 hours that slows by 90% or nasus wither or zilean support maxing e into w with a cdr build and actually just perma 99% slowing you legit only feels playable with swifties and unflinching. And Ionian obviously gives tons of ability haste and super valuable very limited access summoner spell haste. I really hope they just buff tenacity boots instead of nerfing the runes because I think unflinching is already super trash in terms of stats but it's legit the only other way to reduce obnoxious 99% slows. Just buff the MR and maybe make it so the tenacity from mercs is special cased to affect knockups or something. Or it could be changed into an effect like Mundo passive where you ignore the first immobilizing effect to hit you with like a 45 second CD. Which would be really nice for dealing with yasuo funnel kinds of comps where Diana/malph play to Perma knock people up for yasuo or so that melee champs don't immediately get cucked if a janna doesn't have the worst reaction time in history. Edit: this was just my preliminary thoughts but absolutely yes please make them have an adaptive helm passive. Like a real item that works against Gwen's bullshit brokenly overtuned damage? Absolutely please yes every time. It just feels obnoxious that if you don't want Gwen to one shot you off ult CD you have to rush a non mythic that gives no wave clear and then only to have 0 armor which makes it feel grief as hell if the rest of her team is mostly ad.

Why is it bad that merc treads is being purchased less? I can see it being bad for Merc Tread Company investors, but I'm not understanding why this is bad in gameplay. It seems like we could say the drop in purchase rate is due to the once overpowered merc treads finally being in a balanced state.

It's no uncommon that the enemy team is 3/5 magic users on my matches, so I usually a buy them for pumping Magic Resist early. Since I'm mostly a sup, it's not uncommon I have to deal with a CC based sup on the other side, plus their midlaner/jungler when I'm roaming/ganking/jungle controlling. And there's also what the other guy in the comments said, most of CCs types today Mercury Treads doesn't cover you.

I disagree i find myself buying them relatively often. But most of my champions don't benefit that much from other boots. So if the enemy has heavy cc i will opt for legend tenacity and mercs for no cc hack, otherwise go for alacrity and build mercs if they have a bit that is annoying and steelcaps aren't required. And in these scenarios they feel very strong

Like many of the comments have brought up here, tenacity needs to be expanded so that it covers stuff like knockup, nearsight, etc. There also needs to be an item added that's the AP version of thornmail, so many times I've see tanks with 200 mr nuked by spells.
